Overall, I find this book very good. It covers detailed step-by-step information on how to go about creating technical illustrations using Adobe Illustrator. Of course the book assumes you KNOW Illustrator. (If you never used it, don't start whining that it doesn't cover how to use Illustrator!) You'll be guided to create illustrations using standard isometric, dimetric, trimetric, and perspective views, using step-by-step details about how to setup the view and how to create and position ellipses and other object correctly based on the view. The book covers how to create correct and compelling line illustrations, and later, how to apply color and shading for realistic looks. The book also covers illustration techniques using 3ds Max and AutoCAD, but most of the book is focuses on Adobe Illustrator. (You can use any version of Illustrator, by the way.) The only negative comment I have is that there are quite a few typos. I didn't expect a book not to have typos, I mean it does happen, but for a $100 book there are a lot of it! Despite the errors, I would still highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to create correct technical illustrations because of the invaluable advice and detail given. I would like to thank professor Duff for writing this book! (And I'd recommend the publisher, McGraw-Hill, to actually use a spell checker before they publish such an expensive book!)

The Best Fantasy Art Book in the World

This is an amazing book. Everyone I know who have it thinks so. The book is full with colourfull paintings of fantastic places, caracters, heros, dragons, animals, settings, planets, continents, miths, episodes, and the like. For enyone who likes colours and heroic images. Fantasy at its best: Fantasy as Fantasy. Many painters have contributed their best works to this volume. I have looked to find a copy of this book for more then ten years, and could not find one. It is a book from the 70's, and is out-of-print by now. But still it influenced me to paint the walls in my appartment in deep-blue. The book title that mentions "Icarus", the mithical hero who tried to fly to the sun and burned his artifitial wings when he approached it, reveals the philosophical framework that gives the book its artistic unity as a hole. The questions are not possed as simple propositions or statements, but rather in picturesque language that springs right out of our archytipal unconsiousness. It's content is more about dreaming than about reality, and still, it posses questions about our cosmogonies, astronomies, science, technology, culture, gender, humanity, power, evolutional history and psychy. "[Fantasy] art is a lie that tell the truth" (Picasso). Art is at its best when it posses important questions, and find the technical tools to deal with them. This book certainly satisfies these two requirements.

A very great book with over 400 color illustrations. And all the photographs are from actual baby books illustrated by great children's illustrators. These books are 1880 to 1930 period. Wonderful, cheerful illustrations... And there is a very unusual section featuring actual babies information from their actual baby book written by their mother! Fascinating! I never knew anything about these wonderful illustrators...

This book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in cartooning and humorous illustration in general. I had the first edition of this paperback (published in 1973)... that edition has a different cover and shows up in used bookstores occasionally. The chapters about Jack Davis and Mort Drucker were great... two very good Mad Magazine artists (along with Sergio Aragones and Al Jaffee). But my all-time favorite part of this book is the chapter that focuses on Bob Jones. Bob is a great funny animal (anthropomorphic animal) illustrator who created the cartoon Exxon Tiger (also known as the Esso Tiger), a famous icon in America and around the world. There are several great pictures of the Exxon tiger in this book including a model sheet with different expressions! This part of the book alone is great because it's so hard to find pictures of the cartoon tiger like unless you go to the Exxon web site or find old advertisements for Exxon/Esso with pictures of the tiger. In fact, you can go to the Exxon (or ExxonMobil) web site [...] and enter "tiger" in the search field for info from the company about the character. Exxon introduced its cartoon tiger in 1964 as the star of its 'Put a Tiger in Your Tank' ad campaign. (May be hard to find cartoon images now because of the Kelloggs vs. Exxon Lawsuit lost by Exxon in 2000). Anyway, other artists featured in this book are Federico Fellini, Paul Coker, Will Eisner, Jules Feiffer, Gerry Gersten, Johnny Hart, Donald Reilly, Norman Rockwell, Arnold Roth and Maurice Sendack.

I recently picked this book up to learn a few new things about the great drawing program Adobe Illustrator. I was totally impressed. The artwork in the book is amazing. And the tips and tutorials on how the artwork was accomplished are very thorough and to the point. The artists are very good and their insight into how they created their art is very inspiring. I highly recommend this book to all digital artists, and even those who are just casual users of a computer.

I'm an architectual student, and i must admit that this book has become invaluable to me. Its one of the best book of its type. I have several other similar books, but this one by far is the best presented and most complete. I'm not saying its flawless, some of the renderings are blurry, and some subjects should have been further explored. Yet its still my favorite and i'm sure it'll be yours. Atleast untill I find a better book.
