Garfield's Jolly Holiday 3-pack is a great book. It's just like the other Garfield Fat Cat 3-Packs, but it's in color. Also, they are based on television episodes of Garfield. My favorite was 'A Garfield Christmas.' I loved the price, and highly recommend it for holiday gifts.

The humor, characterizations, and masterful drawing combine to elevate this strip to the top tier. (Drawing: Placement of characters in individual frames amounts to cinematography. Satchel's facial expressions and body language capture dogginess). I love the guyzo's and never miss a day.
This is a good starter book for anyone unfamiliar with the strip.

If you're interested in learning the art of cartooning and maybe even making some money along the way, this book should be one of the first you pick up! It covers how to draw funny cartoon characters, how to develop your own style and characters, how to get funny ideas, how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sell your cartoons, and some extra stuff--everything you could need to know! In addition, this book is filled with gag cartoons and strips from some of the most prolific cartoonists in the business. Take my advice: If you're going to by books on cartooning, the Randy Glasbergen books are some of the best! Highly recommend.

A Cartoonist's Cartoonist

Review Date: 2003-01-19
This is an easy to read, compact (117 page) mini-course for anyone considering a career in cartooning. Illustrated throughout by Randy Glasbergen's unique cartoon style, this book first shows how to draw funny cartoon characters, then launches into the kinds of skills needed to compete in today's competitive environment: how to develop your own characters and style; how to create clever cartoon ideas; how to sketch and ink your drawings; and how and where to sell your finished cartoons.

Interspersed are 8 "Cartoonist Profiles". In each Randy introduces the reader to a successful working professional. Tom Cheney is but one example. Thousands of his cartoons have appeared in the New Yorker, National Lampoon, Cosmopolitan, Woman's World, the Wall Street Journal, and 400 other publications worldwide. Another example is "Revilo," whose real name is Oliver Christianson. Oliver spent many years creating cards for the Hallmark greeting card company. Each of these "profiled cartoonists" supplies the reader with his or her own sound advice.

Every so often Randy gives a "homework" assignment, a challenging lesson to help the reader to practice what he has been learning. Afterall, if you are going to "draw and sell" cartoons, you will need to actually apply your ideas, your pencil, and your pen to paper.

Who better to write a book on "Getting Started Drawing and Selling Cartoons" than someone like Randy, who is one of the most widely and frequently published cartoonists in America today, and has drawn "The Better Half" comic panel since 1982?

The back cover concludes with these words: "With this book, you'll learn the ins and outs you need to succeed in this fun-filled -- and lucrative -- market." Very well expressed!

But even if you never sell a cartoon anywhere in your life, this
book will give you a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at this excellent profession.

I have had some experience in this field. I have sold hundreds of cartoon ideas and cartoons over the years, and I recommend Randy Glasbergen's "Drawing and Selling Cartoons" very highly.

I'm a professional Comic and this book came recomended from a "co-worker". I decided to read the book in order, although it says you don't have to, and was very surprised at just how funny it was. Any one who enjoys porn, hookers, or an all out laugh riot will find this book hard to put down. A real page turner.

As someone who likes comedy, how could I not try this title? The book isn't too long which seems somewhat common among works of comic prose. Turns out to be a good thing, as the pages are so packed, anymore humor might have killed me. These stories had me laughing from the first sentence - actually from the story titles! Do take Mr. Richards' advice from the preface on reading the stories in order. For any fan of social satire, this is a find. I don't know where Mr. Richards can go from here, but I know I'll want to be on the sidelines.

Although the original feel of O. Henry stories is maintained in this book (the dialogue, the solid values and homespun wisdom), the illustratons in this book really make it a stand-out. They are full of warmth, rich colors and just a delight in and of themselves, perfectly complimenting the text. There are no shortage of O. Henry collections out there, but this has to be one of the best ,especially for teen to young adult readers.

Honestly, I wasn't really too enthused when I found out that my 7th grade reading comprehension class would be reading this book. My thoughts? O'Henry. Classics. Ugh.
I ended up loving each and every story included in this book. You have to get into these stories, but the surprising endings are really something to look forward to. Some stories move you, some put a smile on your face, and some just make you go "ooooooooooooooooooooh" if you get it. This book is definitely worth your time, no matter how little of it you have:)!

Classic stories, each with a twist...lovely illustrations!

A collection of timeless stories with unforgettable characters. They depict people who could live in any era with the weaknesses and strengths of "everyman." And of course, always with the "O'Henry twist." The illustrations are so real you think they are actual people.

Sunday Peanuts: As It Began
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-30
Peanuts started in 1950, but didn't show up in the Sunday Paper until 1952. This collection features the early days of Peanuts as they appeared in the Sunday Paper. Lucy tries hard to get Schroeder's attention (but he's not having any of that). Snoopy acts crazy even in the early days (he scratches up an LP record with his teeth, causes the other team a home run, and ruins a nice game of paddleball for his master Charlie Brown, he even has a TV set inside the doghouse). Pig Pen is a mess, and Linus endures Lucy's fussbudget ways or her inane lectures on life. And then there's good old Charlie Brown, who can't get a break on the croquet field, gets stranded on ice and needs a little help from Snoopy, and can't win a game. Classic line used by Charlie: "You drive me crazy!"

The book that i read was a very interesting book.

In this collection, Jim Toomey takes us back to Sherman's Lagoon in its beginings. While the artwork is a little bit rought back then, the humor is still there. Sherman is a "Great White Shark" and the disposal of all things edible. Together with his girlfriend Megan, friends Hathorn and Filmore, you'll never look at underwater life the same again! Highly recommended for those who enjoy comic strips.

It's "Sherman's Lagoon" before people really saw it! Cartoonist Jim Toomey presents the earliest incarnations of his immensely funny sea-dwelling goofballs, and I am loving every little page of it.

Sherman tries his fin at being a rapper, the Loch Ness Monster makes a cameo at a stamp machine, Sherman learns where he is on the speed dial of love, Hawthorne gets antenna extensions (yes, we see this storyline later in the strip, but it's different and still funny here), and Fillmore makes another doomed attempt at finding his soulmate.

There are some differences between these strips and the later ones. Hawthorne has long eyestalks and almost invisible mouth, there's more emphasis on secondary fishie characters, and some even take place ("Calvin & Hobbes-like") in a classroom with a forbidding teacher. The artwork is a bit rougher, the humor a little more scattered. But these are the same weird, dumb, gag-infested sea creatures we know and love.

Just as good as the one before it. I've already watched the complete Anime TV series. I loved it so much that I did not expect that the Mange could have bin any better however the manga is much better then the TV series. There's comedy, action, love, brief nudity, mindless violence and everyone likes mindless violence... Just buy the damn thing.

Review Date: 2003-09-23
This second volume of GTO elevates Eikichi Onizuka to the level of superhero as he breaks down the barriers between one of his students he taught during his training and her alienated parents and gives them hope for a better future. He's finally ready to get his first job as a teacher but a problem arises on the bus to his interview. As he is looking at a woman's [posterior] and thinks about grabbing her, some other pervert beats him to it, and ironically, Onizuka ends up defending her honor by delivering a nasty blow to his face. Onizuka comes to find out that the woman, Azusa Fuyutsuki, is interviewing at the same school as him and the person he hit is the prinicipal doing the hiring. Not a very auspicious start.

This second book was as good if not better than the first. The plot and characters become a little more deep as GTO must confront some more profound issues than just simply lusting after young girls. What really comes out in this volume is the sense of his goodness which lurks behind the posturing youth. We also find that his reason for teaching is transforming into that of helping the kids instead of sleeping with them. Great read.

The second GTO book picks up a faster pace and provides more dimension to Great Teacher Onizuka. The realistic character of a young turk turned teacher is amusing and different from other manga titles. The strong personality of Onizuka is balanced with his experience (zero) with girls. A fun and provocative enterntainment.

Gerson is an extraordinary artist with a sardonic wit who we discovered at the Lemieux Gallery in New Orleans (www.lemieuxgallery.com) while at Jazz Fest. He apparently used to practice law there before he wised up and applied his considerable talents to the canvas full time. We were delighted to see another Gerson show in New York last summer and met the artist/author. For anyone who loves the legal profession (or loves to hate it), gerson's wickedly charming illustrations and bon mots is perfect. I'm sending this to all my legal beagle friends for the holiday.
