I got this book for my daughter this Christmas as a followup to another Bumperboy book she liked. She says this is awesome. There are some sad moments, but she likes it very much, and especially loves Bumperpup.

I missed the first Bumperboy adventure (Bumperboy Loses His Marbles), but stumbled across this second installment at this year's Small Press Expo. I flipped through it, loved the artwork, and figured it might make a nice gift for a friend's young son. Well, the kid's going to have to do without, because Bumperboy is staying with me!

This is a fantastic graphic novel that is simple enough to be appropriate for all ages, and yet witty and weird enough for adults to love. Bumperboy is a friendly young lad who wanders around with his dog, Bumperpup, getting in adventures. The world they live in has these kind of wormholes that transport them to new and fantastic places. In this story, one of these portals takes them a talking mountain and the small creatures who live near it. Bumperboy discovers that someone is kidnapping the small creatures, disrupting the fragile ecosystem and threatening the mountain's life. Bumperboy and Bumperpup enlist the aid of a snooty inventor bird (apparently a nemesis of some kind from the first book) to halt the dastardly machinations of the kidnapper (who has a very Snidely Whiplash air to him).

It's simple but effective stuff, with lots of cool little quirks. For example. Bumperpup speaks in his own pictographic language. And there are several oddball characters who Bumperboy consults over the course of the story. The artwork is highly evocative in its simplicity and cleanliness, maintaining a warm tone throughout. The layout is very straightforward and everything about this makes it a great first graphic novel for young (and old) readers. It's somewhat reminiscent of the "Owly" books, but with a cooler, weirder vibe. Top notch stuff -- more please!

Great drawings, cute story

I really liked the expressiveness of bumperboy in the simple black and white drawings. It was a cute story, but it was the fundamental nature of bumperboy that just makes it so appealing. and bumperpup is way cool too. I went to see the display of debbie huey's work at the cartoon museum in SF, but was sadly disappointed to see such a small display. I'd really like to see more of her work.

In this volume, Sakura has to have one final battle against Clow Reed. It confuses her, because she has no idea why he would want to fight her, since he chose her to be Master of the Clow. This book is very interesting, because this is where Sakura finds out everything about Clow Reed's reasons for fighting her, as well has the connections that other people she knows have to him. This book has a lot of Yue, who is one of my favorites, for totally shallow reasons. Reading about Syaoran Li's continued hidden love for Sakura is also a lot of fun. It would probably be good to have read some of the previous books in the series, although I certainly haven't been reading them in order. I definitely recommend this volume.

I'm assuming that you have bought the first volumes of the Master of the Clow series if you are buying this one, hence SPOILERS for earlier parts of the series. Okay!

In this volume, the last-but-one of the Cardcaptor Sakura series, we get the conclusion of Sakura's outward battles to convert the Clow Cards into Star Cards, and the climactic battle between herself and Eriol (who we already know is the one causing problems for her).

As well as the battle (which is pretty spectacular- but then, this IS Clamp we're talking about), we find out the reasons behind what Eriol was doing, and a major plot twist that was not in the anime- this was something that caught me completely by surprise, as I'd seen the anime before reading the manga.

Personally, I don't understand why this twist wasn't put into the anime, but oh well, I really appreciated it here. ^_^

There is some development of the ongoing 'situation' between Syaoran and Sakura as well, and the ending of this volume leaves you waiting for a conclusion of all of Sakura's- and the other characters'- inner, abstract battles and worries, now that the more tangible ones have been finished with.

It's the anticipation of these other loose ends of the series- the relationships and couplings that have been previously hinted at or developed- that will leave you dying for the final volume (it did with me, anyway), so I'd advise you to get volume 6 at the same time as this one, if you can.

There isn't really much else to say: the artwork is just as beautiful as all the rest of this series, and there is just as much cuteness, though perhaps a little more action and seriousness compared to other volumes in the series, since this *does* cover the 'final battle', as it were.

Ah, and the bonus card in this one is of Clow Reed, in case you were wondering.

If you're following this manga series, you certainly can't go without this volume. A must-have for all Clamp and Sakura fans. ^_^

I bought and read this book all the way back in 1983.
At the time I was most struck by its willingness to allege
that various Supreme Court decisions had been outrageous
MISinterpretations of the constitution. One normally associates
that view point with conservative "originalist" or "strict
construction" doctrine, but this book made -- a decade or
two ahead of its time, apparently -- that it was conservatives
who were ignoring the 9th amendment (rights retained by the
people despite not being enumerated in the constitution) and
the privileges&immunities clause. Today, Daniel Farber is
making the same case in "Retained by the People", and
Randy Barnett has come close in "Restoring the Lost Constitution".
Lurio was ahead of the both and far more accessible.

If only all learning were like this! This wonderful little book deserves to be a classic. If you're looking to learn about the Constitution or just brush up on it, "Cartoon Guide" is a hilarious and painless way to do it. (Or if you just want to have some fun.) The text is well-written and humorous, and the illustrations are uproarious. I believe the book would be appropriate as a text or at least a supplement for high school courses and basic college courses; if I were choosing a book on the Constitution for such a course, this would certainly be it.

The entire text of the constitution is included in this book with a serious cartoon narrative explaining both what is written and the historical reasons each portion of text was put into the constitution and its amendments. That history (including how we almost had a President Burr in 1800 and a President Tilden in 1876) helps making the constitution come alive. This is a good book both for people of all ages that need to learn about the constitution and for people who enjoy reading about a serious subject written with a light-hearted perspective.

An incredible learning experience. A book designed for everyone of all ages.

I've heard metaphors used daily and use them myself, however I never stopped to think where these sayings came from. This book tells you everything you need to know about all metaphors. From usage, history, meaning, you get everything you need on making sure you're never out of the loop when someone says a metaphor you never heard of.

so many metaphors are covered in this book, in fact more than I knew ever existed! Dr. Lee captures the essence of every metaphor in a creative illustrated cartoon that helps you associate the metaphor w/ the meaning behind it.

I cannot recommend this book enough to everyone! Especially your kids!

I always buy these--they are very sturdy--pages are a heavy card stock. Lots of room--each week covers two pages (left and right). This year's version has a hard cover. The heavy spiral binding allows easy page turning, and laying the calendar open flat. The cats that adorn each page are Kliban--nothing more needs to be said!

I first bought this calendar for the 2006 year, and what struck me was just how nice the layout was compared to other engagement calendars on the market. Most others have smaller boxes for each day (7 days per page)- this one has 3-4. Also, I hate the ones that have lines. This one has large blank boxes to fit larger writing. Hard cover is a bonus, too.

Opera Cats
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-05
THE CATROPOLITAN OPERA is British artist Susan Herbert's follow-up to her SHAKESPEARE CATS. Whereas that book cast cats in Shakespearean productions, the present one casts them in operas; each illustration is accompanied by a brief scene-setting summary and a witty text by Bill Meadowcane. The book's premise is that cultured cats have formed their own opera company, the Catropolitan Opera, and delight both feline and human audiences with their productions. Like the Metropolitan, the Catropolitan has its impresarios (the company's general manager is named "Rex Manxman"), its director/designers ("Furrelli" created the 1910 production of AIDA) and, of course, its stars. ("Fanny Clawson" is a late, beloved prima donna," "Ailuria Katsos" is the feline Maria Callas; "Inga Holdenstroken" is the company's Wagnerian soprano and "Alexander Katnips" its Russian bass.) Meadowcane's clever commentary makes for entertaining and informative reading and lends coherence to the book.

Herbert's illustrations are brilliant. She is truly a gifted artist who knows color, line, composition - and the anatomy of the cat. Even more so than in SHAKESPEARE CATS, she has managed to suggest human-type emotions on her cats' adorable faces. Her Don Giovanni, facing the "stone guest," looks apprehensive (for once); her Lucia di Lammermoor, green eyes shining, appears blissfully unconscious of her crime as she regards her bloodstained gown; and the characters from THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO (in the final scene) wear expressions ranging from contentment to dignified remorse. In addition to these full-color illustrations, Herbert treats us to small black-and-white drawings of additional characters from (nearly) every opera. So for RIGOLETTO she shows us the debauched Duke of Mantua as well as, in full color, the titular jester and Gilda from Act II; in EUGENE ONEGIN Tatyana holds her letter on the page facing a beautiful color picture of a nervous Lensky and a confident Onegin standing back-to-back, pre-duel. With so many illustrations good enough to frame and display beside "real" art, THE CATROPOLITAN OPERA will be treasured by cat-lovers, opera-lovers, and art-lovers.

If you love oprea or cats, or both. You must have this book. IT is just too much FUN to read this. Test your knowledge of opera by naming the opera without reading the text. It is not hard becasue Ms. Herbert captures the essence of each opera. Give this as a gift to your opera/cat loving friend, you will be a HERO. Mr. Meadowcane's text is witty, however, "Eugene Onegin" is not a tenor.

Another Great Clueless George Book!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-02
Clueless George is a wonderful parody on several levels. Of course, it parodies the Curious George books, as well as George Bush, Dick Cheney and others. It does this with a well written little story and wonderful drawings. George and The Man (Dick Cheney) are up to their old tricks again, this time spying on people with the MSA (Monkey Spy Agency).

The second book of the series, "Clueless George Is Watching YOU" is a humorous look at how the Bush administration's spying on individuals has mushroomed and how it was hidden from the public. The drawings are detailed and need to be viewed several times before their full impact will hit.

This is the longest of the books. Although I think was great, don't read this if you are a Bush fan. If, however, you are a reasonable human with a funny bone, then these little books are a must. They are a little expensive for what you get, so I would recommend either getting it either used, from a library (as if that is likely) or by buying the three book set on sale here on Amazon.

Fun for the whole family!

That is...unless your family is full of Republicans, like mine is.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book, having quite enjoyed its predecessor, "Clueless George Goes to War!" And while I really liked that one, it's sequel, "Clueless George is Watching You!" is actually funnier than the first. Pat Bagley is still at the top of his game, sending everyone's favorite monkey president on an adventure to try and stop terrorists - by spying on Americans! While the plot may sound a bit outlandish and implausible (sarcasm, of course), this book can easily be summed up in two (or is that three?) words: non-stop fun. Bagley somehow manages to add wit and humor to a not-so-humorous reality, complete with adorable black-and-white illustrations that are somewhat reminiscent of a children's storybook.

If you were a fan at all of the first book...or you are a fan of the Curious George books...or just a fan of the idea of a monkey running America, then this book is for you. Highly recommended. I have actually read it about 3 or 4 times in the past week, and I still chuckle every time.

Thank You Pat Bagley for another Great Time!!!

Pat Bagley seems to have an uncanny ability to come from what may, at first glance, be far afield and then hits abruptly to the center of the issue he is satirizing. He strikes the mark many times in this short but enjoyable work. He raises metaphoric issues about the politics of our times that abound in exact truthfulness. He leaves one with many chuckles and sighs.

I stumbled upon this incredible book in the used section of a local comic book store. I'd already read two of her other collections of pictures and stories and was totally siked when I saw this one. It really blew my mind, man. I mean, its a totally awesome experience, like blowing coke out of your nose or farting in the middle of class when its real quiet and everybody just dies of pure laughter. Its sad too, and serious as death. Lynda Barry is my eternal soul sister and she doesn't even know it. I only share this book with my favorite people in the world. Its one of my secret treasures. Its a totally radical and awesome story, man, you gotta believe me, man, its like, its like the best book ever. I love Lynda Barry.

Review Date: 2003-12-07
This is a work of genius. "Now, how can you say that about such a book?" Well, have a look at it first. Barry's observations may be couched in terms of her odd protagonists, Marlys and Maybonne, but they are no less telling, cutting, emotive or perceptive for that. Never have I come across an evocation of adolescence which comes close to her achievement here. She manages to touch on love, death, commitment, family, joy (and even, very lightly, incest), and have fresh things to say about each. The scenes involving school and the love-rivalry between the sisters is unique in cartooning, and perhaps in the wider realm of illustrated literature.

I picked up this book on a whim & I'm glad I did--it only took reading one or two of the (cartoon) frames for me to buy it. It's a down-to-earth but funny trip! It is just funny! Reminds me of when I was 14 & all the crazy things I went through-guys, siblings, teachers, parents. The two main characters are so quirky, but you gotta love them! It's like you're let into their minds & you know every little thing they're thinking. Seriously, this book is funny & insightful, & good to read on a late night at home when you're alone & the rest of the world is asleep. I can't wait to read Lynda Barry's other books.

Hello, and may I just say well done. Well done. Well....... done. There is nothing on the earth better, than to see just a hint of incest injected into our modern animation. Ben and the doc, our unlikely heroes (and villians) in this epic novel! A little squeeze on the knee here, and a little stroke of the ass there, and everything is kicking off well! Yes, an enjoyable book. I would like to thank Jonathon Katz. A man. A man. Oh, man, what a man! Do you think he ever surfs the web? Maybe check GOOGLE for links to Dr Katz.? Read these very reviews??? I would. And back to the truth. This book reminds me of the excellent television show, because it has the same characters! Yes, it is funny. Yes, it is cheap (Money wise). And yes, it is good. Buy It! Or steal it! But don't burn it.
