Tite Kubo, Bleach: Tattoo on the Sky (ViZ, 2001)

So how will the crew get into the walled city where Rukia is being held? By being shot out of a cannon, of course! But that doesn't mean all their problems are solved-- far from it, as what waits for them on the other side of the wall makes the battles they've had before look like a walk in the park. Another fine entry in the series, which is well worth your time-- if you're not a Bleach fan yet, pick up the first issue and become one. ****

If Ichigo and the rest are to survive their way past the barrier to the Soul Society, he must first learn to control his massive spiritual energy into a shield to punch through it.
More of the Soul Society is introduced, giving some idea of how things are run in there.
The battles are few, but excellent. And the rest is far from boring.

And you thought it couldn't get any better...

"Tattoo on the Sky" finds our heroes as guests of the slightly crazy explosives expert Shiba Kuukaku--Ichigo, Yoruichi-san and company need her help breaking and entering into Seireitei. Kuukaku's brother Ganjuu, with whom Ichigo tangled in the previous volume, is hanging around too, with predictable (and amusing) consequences as far as Ichigo's temper goes. Although the group succeeds in turning themselves into a spirit-force cannonball, once they arrive in Seireitei, the fun is just getting started. Meanwhile, meetings of the captains and vice-captains of the 13 squads are held, and Ichimaru Gin is called on the carpet to answer for his unapproved actions regarding the intruders.

In my opinion Bleach is probably the best shounen manga in print today. Tite Kubo is certainly one of the best mangaka; his artwork is always amazing, his shifts from chibi form and back are perfectly timed, and he has an uncanny ability to pick the exact moment to depict in every frame. The sense of movement in his best work is palpable.

Bleach was awesome from the beginning, but as the Soul Society arc picks up speed it's only getting better. Hollows are nothing compared to the challenges Ichigo has already faced and the new opponents (Madarame Ikkaku) he fights in this volume...to say nothing of the foes who lie ahead. Moreover, despite introducing a wealth of fascinating new characters, Tite Kubo still finds time to depict the continuing growth of our favorites Orihime, Ishida, and Chad, and Rukia's own history is slowly revealing itself.

All in all, Viz is doing quite a good job with its American editions, but I suppose I've been spoiled by reading Del Rey. The lack of honorifics is disorienting, and there are a few cases where attempts to make the Japanese more easily understandable come dangerously close to destroying the meaning (in particular, Ikkaku's comments about he and Ichigo's names). Moreover, I want my color pages! And would it kill Viz to print the title on the front cover? It's in English in the Japanese...But, all that being said, it is nice that Viz translates the sound effects, which are almost impossible to pick up unless one can ask a native speaker.

Really, what are you waiting for? It's awesome. Run, don't walk.

Tite Kubo, Bleach: The Blade and Me (ViZ, 2002)

Ichigo continues his training, culminating in a duel with hat-and-clogs himself. The other folks involved in Ichigo's loosely-knit band are also preparing, in their own ways, for the journey to free Rukia from her imprisonment. The usual mix of action ad character development, and with the same (sometimes surprisingly) high quality we've come to expect from Bleach. Good stuff, this. ****

Enjoyed the artistists renditions of each and every definition of "White Trash". Jeff Foxworthy has nothing compared to these hilarious women!

I can't believe I used to work with this chick! She's sick I tell you, sick! This book was hilarious and truthful. I found myself pausing in the middle of my laughter because although it was funny, it was describing what most of us do and think everyday. Almost an insult but you gotta laugh, we've all been there and she has such a talent for making a joke about it. A must read. Especially the jokes about the inmates!

More classics. No surprises here - if you have or have had teenagers you will recognize each agonizing moment. A few "pre sketches" which are interesting to see the cartoonist's way of working. Otherwise simply a compilation of the strips seen each weekend in the Sunday papers. Be warned if you follow them each week you may have seen these before. However they are magic - catching the angst and bathos of parents with teenagers. I am not sure how teenagers will take this - will they be self aware enough to recognize themselves. Might be worth a try if they feel they are the only ones to agonize over a zit, the first date, first bust up - the driver's test...

One of the Best that Makes you Think

Candorville is truly amazing. At first it is funny, but then when you think about the story and the issues it is not funny. Darrin Bell got a really good scope on the urban 20 to 30 something part of society by selecting his main characters. You've got the no good thug/bum Clyde who quick to blame everyone else for his situation but never blames himself. Then you've got Lemont - a smart and talented writer with low self-esteem and constant fears of rejection. Lemont knows better but his own insecurity stops him from doing better. Lemont seems to voice the opinion of the author. I think Lemont's character represents Darrin Bell. Lemont and his thoughts are the source of all critical questions asked in this book. And of course, you've got Susan Garcia. Susan is a progressive young woman who wants to grow professionally but is often torn by dilemmas in her workplace. Susan's character is Darrin's wife, who also happens to be latina. This assumption becomes evident as the story in the book develops.
The characters grow with every strip and eventually will evolve to be as complex as normal human beings.
But enough criticism, Candorville is awesome and a great read with your morning coffee.

A treat for comics fans

I've enjoyed "Candorville" since it appeared in the Washington Post circa 2003. Darrin Bell has a sharp sense of humor and a keen eye for social as well as political absurdities. His strip isn't just perceptive, it's very, very funny.

A funny collection of comic strips that threaten you to think about social issues in this country without the all the anger. I really love the main characters Lemont, C-Dog, and Susan who seem to evolve w/ each page. I am already inpatiently awaiting the next book of adventures. The romantic tension between Lemont and Susan is obvious, however, I find their tolerence of C-Dog more than a little interesting. Anyway this is an intelligent social issue comic strip that doesn't quite jump in your face like Boondocks, but will try to speak to you just the same.

......very funny

[C-dog].The author has co-authored another comic book series called Rudy Park,I look forward to reading that too.

SF : THIS REVIEW IS RATED SPOILER-FREE

If you've already got 1 & 2 of this arc of sakura stories, you'll be pleased to hear it gets better! (impossible as it may seem)
Sakura is beginning to finally get her head round what it means to be a Clow Master, but still has much to learn. Meanwhile, a very shrewd Tomoyo is still pestering Li about his feelings for Sakura. Sure enough, he FINALLY plucks up the courage to tell her as Tomoyo suggested, but stuff begins to get in the way (typical), much to our amusement. Personally, my favourite part of the book was when Sakura was attacked by sheep down that dark hole. How can i forget?!? "What happens to Yukito?" i hear you cry, and, as promised by book two, Yuki begins to fall into a bit of trouble. There's a kinda 'how will they do it?' thing going on, but i recommend you don't read any spoiler reviews: i did and it ruined the reading (but it was still fantastic). I would recommend getting 4 and 5 along with this, else you may suffer withdrawal symptons whilst waiting for them to come one by one.
thanks for reading,
Xx*Darlz*xX

Okay, so it wasn't so long ago that I sneered at the thought of Cardcaptor Sakura, but that was before I knew anything about it. Now I can't read the books fast enough! In this book, Clow Reed once again tests Sakura. The relationships between the characters has always been the most interesting thing for me in this series. Syaoran is still trying to work up the courage to tell Sakura what his feelings for her are, and Toya and Yukito's relationship gets developed more. Toya has to do something, because Yue is fading away, and if he fades, then Yukito (Yue's temporary form) will go too.

Once again, the artwork is lovely - it's really detailed! The right-to-left format, which is the format that the comic was originally in, can take some getting used to if you haven't dealt with it before, but the back of the book gives instructions for reading this format. The original sound effects characters have also been preserved, although, unfortunately, there is no translation provided for those characters. Mostly, this doesn't matter to me, but sometimes it would be nice to know what the sound effect was supposed to be. Still, I definitely recommend picking this book up, or at least getting started on the series, because it's worth it.

I love this book!

I think this " MASTER OF THE CLOW" story arc is alot better than the first CAPTURING CLOW CARDS" arc. The reasons are why are because:
1. It's "AUTHENTIC MANGA" in right to left format and it's more cool since it's the way the people in Japan make/read them.
2. The CLAMP group put little japanese laanguage tidbits in these.
4. I like how the CLAMP group made the front of these, with it kind of looking like CLOW CARD, and Sakura being the picture in the middle.
5. The events roll by faster.
6. This second arc has a lot more suspenceful events than the first arc.
Now, onto my review:
In the first chapter:
The holiday is White Day, and everyone is getting/giving presents.
In the second chapter:
Clow Reed tests Sakura again.
In the third chapter:
Clow Reed tests Sakura again.
In the fourth chapter:
Toya gives his magis to Yue.

The best CLAMP series, the best Cardcaptor Sakura book!!

I will list the reasons why this is a series that everyone should read this book and this entire series:
1) CLAMPs drawings are beautiful. Without fault. And the chibis are really dinky *huggles chibi Yue*
2) Chibi Yue with question mark over his head near the end (so cute!!)
3) All the characters have their original Japanese names *yay*
4) It is not a childrens' series, it is suitable for all ages because there is no older content but the plot can be appreciated by anyone
5) This is the book where Yukito is fading away *sob* so there is a whole "How will he be saved?" thing going on... this book answers that question!!
6) Syaoran is so cute when he is in love with Sakura
7) The end scene is really beautiful, and there is a fair amount of Touya and Yukito sappiness *yippee* in a way that only CLAMP can pull off
8) Nakuru Akizuki is annoying Touya in this one!! (although not as much as the previous two) And she is such a funny character... she should be in the books more

9) The heroinne isn't annoying, or spoilt, in fact she is sweet, innocent, yet strangely mature and selfless without being pious. She is instantly likeable, as are all the characters in their own way.
10) There isn't much in the way of battles in any of the books, just enough to keep it fresh and different, and then the rest is concentrating on their relationships. When I first read CCS, I was amazed how different to Magic Knight Rayearth (a previous work of CLAMPs) it was, because in MKR there is an awful lot of battle time clocking up and it gets boring, whereas CCS battles are always funny and inventive because they are interspersed with Tomoyo's adoring comments about Sakura and her outfits (and does anyone remember the time Sakura was attacked with stuffed sheep while in a sheep costume?!?)

Unlinke many mangas, all the characters in CCS have their own little quirks that make them interesting, even the characters who appear for about three lines or so a book. Each character is so well fleshed out that the world described seems vibrant and full of life, and so these books are a joy to read. CLAMP really designed the plot well, and I look forward to watching the anime (not Cardcaptors) and reading CLAMPs new work Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, which contains characters from different CLAMP mangas including Syaoran, Sakura, Touya, Yukito, Tomoyo and Fujitaka from CCS, or so I believe.

I got a lot of enjoyment out of carving this character. Mr. Stetson's
instructions and the step-by-step photos are easy to follow and you will be proud of the result. One caution: Mr. Stetson's old man has an over-the-horizon fixed stare that doesn't look natural. And so did my copy. Use care when you set the head. I made mine a fly-swatter to carry and now he seems to have a reason for staring at the ceiling!

I have most if not all of the caricature carving books and in my opinion this is one of the two best. Highly recommended.

Dave Stetson is probably one of the top caricature carvers in the nation. He views the world around him in a unique way. His approach to teaching woodcarving stems from a desire to teach the student beyond the project, to enable the student to be more creative and carve on his own. This book allows the student to do that. The explanations are concise, with step by step photos and explanations. The photo gallery has a wonderfully diverse subject matter. And Dave's style of teaching is loaded with humor. It's a great addition to my woodcarving book library.

It doesn't matter if you're 8 or 80, this gamebook will enable you to recreate the feel of your favorite cartoons, television series, or movies. It may say it's about the 1980's action cartoons, but that's just a tiny bit of what you can do with it. The system allows easy creation of virtually any genre of play and is extremely easy to learn, while not being childish and dumbed down. This is a must-have for real roleplayers.

Review: If you, like I, have silently wished & waited for a game that captures the essence and "magic" of shows like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, and GI Joe, then THIS game is for you! I'm a 20-year superheroics veteran of the sadly defunct Villains & Vigilantes (ALSO highly recommended, if you can ever find a copy and are into superhero-style roleplaying), and I can tell you this game effectively addresses the action, charm, and mystique of the above-mentioned cartoon shows (basically, the pregenerated characters in the book ARE, undeniably, the same lead characters with the serial numbers filed off, so to speak). LUV it!

I can't wax poetic enough about this game. The book is a quick read, but it leaves you stuffed to the brim with ideas for what to do with the game. There are all sorts of goodies packed within the system, and the special-ability rules let you model almost any character you can think of perfectly. The system itself is functional without being obtrusive, and easy to modify - the game even gives suggestions on how to add flavor without taking away the speed of play. A great game of quick, slap-down action, or for extended campaigns with a highly cinematic feel. Buy it.

Ever wanted to play in one of those cartoon series from the 80s (Masters of the Universe, Brave Starr, She-Ra, Transformers etc.)? If the answer is yes, this is the game for you as it allows you to create the background for a cartoon series and play in it.
A simple and effective game system that concentrates on story and action, allowing characters to do quite outrageous things but doesn't get bogged down in rules and tables (and it uses a D12!). In that respect, it is similar to Robin D. Laws' Feng Shui system.
The book contains information on a vast variety of characters and their abilities from various genres.
A full campaign set (second half of the book) is included as well as a large number of campaign ideas covering all genres.
The book is a joy to read, even if you're never going to play.
For a small independent game, the production quality is quite high and the black and white illustrations range from adequate to superb.
Buy this game and rediscover your childhood dreams!

I purchased this book to use as an extension to a portrait module I was doing with year 8. The information and illustrations were perfect and allowed the students, and me, to build on drawing skills that had been learnt previously. Initally I got them to do some of the books exercises they then created a character which was developed into a comic strip.
My 10 year old grandson also enjoyed drawing and developing his own cartoon characters using information from the book.

Cartooning Basics is an award-winning, step-by-step cartooning guidebook for doodlers age 7 and up. Though the simple illustrations and plain-terms instructions are readily accessible to young people, they are equally instructive to amateur adults seeking to hone their cartooning skills and learn how to create cartoon characters. Now in an enlarged and revised format with a foreward by Jim Davis, creator of "Garfield", Cartooning Basics covers how to get ideas for 'toons, common symbols, especial tips for expressions and facial features, showing distance, depth, and perspective, and much more, while the many, many illustrations demonstrate how all cartoons begin as a collection of simple shapes, from which details are elaborated. Highly recommended for practicing artistic techniques or just plain drawing fun.

What a great gift!

My seven year old daughter recieved this book as a gift and just loves it! She has never felt very comfortable in her artistic abilities and this book has provided her with the instruction she needed to build up her confidence. She practices with the book almost daily and now insists on making everyone's birthday cards using characters out of the book and ones she has created on her own. It was such a great gift that we now give it as a gift; along with a pad of drawing paper, a fun pencil and an eraser, it is always a big hit!
