Beetle Bailey has been in service for fifty years and this collection compiles artist Mort Walker's best and significant strips of the lazy soldier. The book is broken up into the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and it's real interesting to see how the characters' look have evolved over the years. Beetle himself was originally a college student and Mr. Walker explains that at the time very few people went to college in the country and could relate to Beetle, so in order to sell the strip on a wider level he ha Beetle join the army. Obviously, Mr. Walker made a smart decision as Beetle and his Camp Swampy are still going strong.

This delightful collection of Beetle Bailey strips had me laughing so hard it HURT! Mort Walker is truly a genius! The indolent soldier, the irate sarge and cast of assorted, equally funny characters are truly a treat. This collection is truly a treat. You will learn from Private Beetle Bailey the fine art of work dodging, sarge baiting and finding laughs in the most unlikely places. A keeper!

This story presents how Cycplops(slim) and Jean Grey (red) go to the future and why they had to leave cable, their son in that distant future, the art is really good and the story is really interesting.

...because I was stupid enough to lend the miniseries to a friend. Anyway, I liked it so much I HAD to have it.

This is demi-science-fiction story about future ruled by Apocalypse and childhood of Nate Summers, known as Cable. It is EXTREMELY well written , and art is incredible, just like anything Gene Ha does. Reccomended for Marvel fans in general, other people would have too much trouble understanding who-is-who .

History of the Summers Family Tree

There are simply too many people in the X-universe that carry the name "Summers". Well, at least this book clears some questions about one of them (Now if it wouldn't raise so many more). The story starts just after X-Men 30, with Scott Summers and Jean Grey-Summers (newly wed), are pulled 2000 years into the future by Mother Askani (Who happens to be Rachel Summers, the alternate future daughter of the newlyweds, who is a major time traveler). Their mission. Raise baby Nathan (who is, if you want to get technical, Rachel's older baby brother [did that even make sense?]) So here are Scott (who goes by "Slym") and Jean (Who goes by "Redd") raising one of the most powerful mutants, who has to disguise himself as a human, in a world where it is "survival of the fittest." And in this world, humans are not counted amongst the fittest, and are trated as such (Very much like in modern day comics with mutants). The unfortunate thing is that the series covers a few days in each book, over a period of twelve years. It gives us only a glimps into Cable's life. Oh well, The Askani Son series picked up the pieces there!

Sorting out the Summers family tree

Review Date: 2006-07-19
The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix trade paperback collects the 1994 miniseries that attempted to sort out one of the most bizarre family trees in comics, even by X-Men standards.

In this series, newlyweds Scott Summers and Jean Grey, otherwise known as X-Men Cyclops and um, Jean Grey (the name Marvel Girl must be passé) are snatched from their island honeymoon and sent 2,000 years into the future by their elderly daughter Rachel (who arrived there from yet another future timeline) to watch over Scott's infant son Nathan, who had been sent to that very future in order to survive the techno-organic virus that was killing him in "our" time. Rachel, like her mom, is the sometime host of the powerful Phoenix force, and Nathan would grow up to become the mutant warrior known as Cable. Nathan has a cloned duplicate called Stryfe, who is being raised as the heir to Apocalypse. Oh yes, Nathan's mother was Madeline Pryor, a now deceased (sort of) clone of Jean Grey.

I told you it was complicated!

This series attempts to weave these very different threads into a somewhat cohesive pattern. Scott and Jean end up spending more than a decade in the future, which gives them the opportunity to actually raise young Nathan, who is unaware of exactly who his guardians really are. The "Dayspring Family" eventually joins the underground resistance movement and makes what appears to be a final confrontation with Apocalypse. I say "appears" because Apocalypse is killed about as often as Jean Grey, and with similar long term success.

Scott Lobdell does an admirable job with an obviously difficult group of characters, origins, and events. While the series is not as fun and exciting as other X-Men adventures, it is a necessary story to tell, if for no other reason than to clean up the storylines abandoned by so many other writers.

Gene Ha's artwork is absolutely incredible. Ha is one of the most underrated artists working today, with an attention to detail that has to be seen to be believed. His art totally sets the tone of the series, and makes the otherworldly setting and characters seem that much more believable.

Overall, the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix is a key part of X-Men history. It may not be as fascinating as X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga or the Age of Apocalypse, but it is an important part of the lives of several key X-Men characters.

This story is GREAT for kids! Who would ever have thought of canned hams? Quite a unique concept that allows children to use their imaginations. It's good, clean fun. Nice story line with attractive color and graphics. Teaching children to "Treasure Your Youth" is also a great concept. Most of us adults have taken our youthful years for granted and this book helps us to stress that important concept to the next generation. My kids really enjoyed this and can't wait for upcoming episodes. Actually, I can't either!

Wow! What a unique character this Henrietta Ham is! The Adventures of Henrietta Ham was such a fun book to read. It brought me back to my youth - in my age of innocence. Even though there are a few difficult words for youngsters, I would recommend this book for children even down to the age of 4 or 5 to give them a head start with vocabulary and to get them thinking about how fun it is to be outdoors discovering wildlife. The story offers good, clean fun, and it is informative, too. It not only talks about the different wildlife in the characters' environment, it also goes into the subject of safety in their environment. The subtitle is "Meet Henrietta"... Could this be a first in a series on The Adventures of Henrietta Ham? I certainly hope so! I already own this book, but I just purchased 7 more copies to give friends as gifts during the holidays. This will be a great bedtime story for their kids. So enjoyable and fun!

Time has killed the wit and focus of many cartoonists, who once were relevant. They are still in the papers propped up by reputation but having long ago exhausted their creativity and now produce by formula, stamped out by assistants. If I were to make a top ten list of cartoonists that matter, I'd stop at about 6. Tony Cochran is among those 6. This small group has intelligence, focus and wit in common. Each day Agnes is fresh, deep and often profound, which is a lot to accomplish in 3 panels. It takes an artist to do this. Cartooning at this level is art. This collection of his first year of work proves he knew what he was doing from the first panel of the first strip. It is enjoyable to read as so many at once give you insight into how this artist's mind works.

Simpson had been a character on The Simpsons; if Disney made a musical cartoon of Kafka's The Trial. Follow the adventures of "Sam Roland, the Detective Who Dies." Learn helpful law tips from "Harvey Richards, Lawyer for Children." See the earth overtaken by giant wombats. Sex, religion, television, and giant nap-taking aliens. It's all here. Why fight it?

This book by Lupoff and Thompson is a pioneering work. Books on comics used to focus on daily strips and almost always glossed over comic books entirely. This was the first to give us the background of the artists, writers, and the charecters themselves. Well worth the money.

Those were the days...

There is a story told, of a poor Italian man who lived in a small house with dirt floors. His only true possession was a painting that has been handed down through his family. He hung it over his fireplace. Well, rumors spread and a investigating Art Historian found that the painting was a lost Bottichelli , valued at several million dollars. After the discovery was made public, the man was forced to sell the painting as he could not afford security or insurance for it. This painting that was once appreciated for its beauty was now appreciated for its large price tag.

The point of this, and there is one, is that comics were once valueless pieces of old paper. People loved them anyways, and loved them enough to write this little book. "All in Color for a Dime" has a secret that modern comic collectors may have lost. It exudes joy for the four-color wonders know as comics. There is so much excitement in recounting the lost but not forgotten Captain Marvel, or even gaining new found respect for Popeye. All those little treasures are recounted in personal stories. Comics for the love of it, and not for the price tag. Reading Golden Age comics for the stories, what a great concept!

However, as a modern comics collector, I seem unable to ignore price tags entirely. I must admit I chucked when one of the writers was astounded to learn that a mint Action Comics #1 could be sold for up to $300.00. Those were the days.

The World according to Carmine Infantino is a deep, look into one of the industries giants. Full of clever writing, and lots of historic analogies and tidbits of life in the times.

Reviews Carmine's career from day 1 (birth) all the way to modern time. When you read this and see what this man has brought to field of Art, you immediately want to go grab up everything you have orcan get by him just to see in more detail what has gone on in the background of these pulp paper gems of art history.

Cleverly done, the book appears as if it could have been part of a series of treatises on the men who made comics what they are today.

Very enjoyable, one of those you cant put it down til your done type of books, that you will have no regrets purchasing.

This wonderful book tells the story of Carmine Infantino- one of the true legends of the comic's biz. In addition to being one of the most prolific cover artists of DC's Silver Age, Infantino is credited with a host of distinctions. He drew Green Lantern and the Flash during the Golden Age and co-created Black Canary. He designed the look for Barry Allen and as such is the very first artist to draw the Silver Age Flash for Show Case #4- credited with launching the Silver Age of Comics. His artwork is generally regarded as the very best to ever grace the covers and pages of the Flash. His work on Adam Strange outsold all other Sci-Fi comics before or since with the exception of one title- Star Wars (and it was Infantino himself who, as the artist drawing the early Star Wars comics for Marvel, helped the series beat his own record on Mystery in Space). He also designed and was the first artist to draw Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, creating the Silver Age character that would go on to appear in the hugely popular Adam West and Burt Ward TV show. He also created a new Batman villain, Poison Ivy. His other credits include Airboy, the JLA, Spider-Woman, Suberboy, Charlie Chan, and other titles too numerous to list. Perhaps most importantly Infantino is credited with saving the Batman line of comics from cancellation with his "new look" Batman, re-designed Batmobile and other Bat gadgets. He became editor, publisher, and ultimately president of DC Comics. "The Amazing World of Carmine Infantino" is a true must buy for any comics fan!

Absolutely brilliant! The story begins when Wallace invents a "Ping Pong O'Matic Automated Home Leisure System", but when the machine goes haywire and destroys the washing machine, Wallace needs to pay a hefty repair bill. And so the man and his dog enter an Invention Convention sponsored by the Acme Corporation- with a first prize of £100. But soon, everything's not all as it seems...

The plot of this book is fabulous, the art is superb and the colours are nice and bright! Of the new characters introduced, the best are Mr. Patel, Wallace's next-door neighbour, an expert on pigeons and prevailing wind conditions, and the hillariously funny Mr. Do-it-all, the Hotel Splendio's doorman, receptionist, porter, bell boy, gardener, barman, room-service operative, and owner: "It's a job share," according to Mr. Do-it-all.

I would recommend this book to anyone- if you've never seen Wallace and Gromit before, you should still read this book- it is absolutely brilliant.

Better yet, get Marillion to do the soundtrack - their latest album just out is called ANORAKNOPHOBIA! (coincidence? Fate? Act of God?) This book takes the intrepid duo into the realm of Hollywood possiblities with a plot that rivals James Bond and Austin Powers, characters like the enigmatic and intriguing Queenie who is at once frightening and wildly attractive, and the villianous von Struedel who could beat Dr. Evil at ping pong any day! Funny throughout, yet another winner from the folk who brought you W&G: the Lost Slipper and the Curse of the Ramsbottoms. Great bedtime fare!

Wallace and Gromit: Anoraknophobia is a great book for even a person that isn't interested in the claymation movies. It features the oscar winning character Wallace and his faithful dog pal Gromit. The book is very humorous at times but also puts it's share in with suspense. It takes place when Wallace creates a ping pong -o- matic home leisure system. Wallace tests out the new home leisure system he breaks his irreplaceable drum on account of they are on a budget. Wallace decides to enter in a invention convention to raise money for the new drum there and the wackiness begins! This is a great book that is very well drawn and thought out. If you liked movies such as "The Wrong Trousers" or "A Grand Day Out," you should definatly check this book out.

Mutts is my favorite comic strip and this collection does not disapoint; Mutt's is getting better all the time.
