I love Walt's style and the cartoons are really funny in context of the political climate. I think he is one of the best!

This book is not funny and the cartoons are poorly drawn.

I love political cartoons and own several books by the greatest political cartoonist, Pat Oliphant. He is witty and an excellent artist. This book by Walt Handelsman, however, is not funny and looks like the cartoons were drawn by an amateur. If you want to see how a professional produces political cartoons, check out Pat Oliphant's books.

Simple but fun humor

This book and the Here Kitty Kitty book are hilarious! The humor is simple and so are the cartoons, but that is what makes them even funnier. This author is certainly familiar with animal behavior. I would not be so fast to condemn these books, but take the humor as it is ... simple, funny, and entertaining. My children could not get enough of these books.

Mindless attempt at humor to no avail. Browse elsewhere!

This book did nothing more than insult my intelligence with its grade school mentality. The concept is great, however the simplicity and presentation serve to amuse only the "hard of thinking". The lack of imagination became apparent after several pages. I find more humor on two tear off pages of my "Far Side" desk calender than I found on 117 pages of this paperback. illustrations are as bad, or worse than the one shown on the cover. Save 4.99 and give any toddler a crayon, paper, and a half hour to scribble. The outcome will be far superior.

For people that hate Valentine's Day

This book, written and drawn by the brilliant William Steig, is specifically dedicated to the anti-Valentines. For mushy-lovey-dovey stuff, try Steig's "Made for Each Other." "Sick of Each Other" is a funny, smart collection of drawings that show the things we have all eventually thought about our relationships. My favorite is the drawing of the princess and the knight, wherein the princess is screaming, "Who asked you to rescue me?" If that is the kind of thing you like, then pick up this book.

this was a mistake on my part to buy.
I was not impressed, I thought it would be a whimsical look at how couples have gotten along for so long. Was I wrong. I was then happy to send it back the very day I recieved it.This was on a list of possible Valintines gift. Well if your going to break up, then yes buy it for your partner. Other wise, NOT!!

Gov. Evan Mecham is a fine man.

Gov. Evan Mecham is one of the finest men I know. He is an authentic American hero who flew the fastest aircraft, the P-36, in many missions over Germany in World War II. He was shot down and faced the gastopo and luftwaffen intergators in the German prison camps. He showed uncommon valor as a captive American Army Air Corps Officer. He came home, married his high school sweetheart and left a legacy of seven wonderful children, 29 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was an outstanding businessman. He accomplished more for the people of Arizona in 15 months as Governor than his elected successor did in eight years. To make fun of him or disparage him is an insult to the people of the United States and only disgraces the perpetrator of such a cowardly and dispicable act.

Mecham is still fun to laugh at even now!!!

Hilarious book about the buffoon who was govenor of Arizona for a short time in the 1980's. If your remember Mecham, it is worthwhile to read this for some more belly laughs. A one of a kind book.

I was expecting a little more than what I received. It's not much of a book. There are few pages and does not include much information. I could not use it for my classroom.

This book series is one of my son's favorites. He will reread all the books because the pictures and the stories have such great details that he constantly finds something interesting. He finds the topics fascinating and I like the books because many of the US history topics are not covered in the Virginia elementary schools at his grade level.

This book is one of many that should only be picked up if you are one heck of a fast reader. It's 403 pages of what you could do with a condom are pretty explicit and go on and on. I only liked the one about sticking one on the door handle to stop thieves. Well, anyway, it doesn't COVER too much besides that.

Ax-to-Grind Rius
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I know about Los Sumpermachos from having been born and raised in Mexico, living there during the sixties and seventies. Imagine 'Doonesbury' and in Mexico, forty - fifty years ago. Due to the realtively low literacy rate among Mexican adults, one of the main mediums for adult reading in Mexico is comic books. They even print comic books with photographs as a soap opera genre.
Some of these can get quite sophisticated and abstract.
'Los Supermachos' was created by Rius. His drawings are excellent, and his writing is brilliant, acerbic, and ruthless against the insanities of Life in Mexico: corruption, the hypcricies and joys of the culture. One of my favorite characters is 'Calzoncn' (Underpants-Guy), who walks around his town clothed in an electric blanket (with the electric cord and plug trailing behind him) donated by some drifter gringo. There is a corrupt cop that looks like a cross between Jos Feliciano and Pancho Villa.
I am not certain of Rius' history, but I believe that somehow 'Someone Official' took over Los Supermachos. It became a very tame cute publication and I am pretty sure Rius was forced into exile in Cuba. He's since written many more volumes, such as Cuba for Beginners, Uncle O(USA)MA, The Unending Conquest of Mexico, 500 Years Screwed, but Christian, Mashed Potatoes, the History of the Papacy, (the words for potato and pope are homonyms) etc... Just to give you an idea of his themes.
However, I have found those books to be much more on the preachy, didactic, tirading side of writing. I miss the bite of the carefully-crafted stinging humor. Because of the high level of language play (puns and slang abound), I recommend these comic books only to those who have a high literacy level in vernacular Mexican Spanish. Be prepared to howl with laughter and rage. if I weren't an overworked, but satisfied teacher, I would try to get these translated. Rius is right up there with Aristophenes, and the world should know about him.

Unique Character, Mildly Amusing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-11
This book is a compilation of comics featuring the cartoon minister Brother Biddle. The book starts with comics from 1978 and ends with a cartoon made for the book from 1989. The first part of the book is divided by theme with several comics concerning such subjects as the rapture, fundamentalism, Catholicism v. Protestantism, televangelism, ministerial job security, women in the ministry, church funding, Hell, the media, and racism. The rest of the book seems to be a hodgepodge of strips and cartoons of various styles including a take-off of The Raven. The comics are dated at times, Brother Biddle does a rendition of "Beat It" plus there are several cartoons of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker. The comics are interesting and, at times, very intellectual. The humor sometimes, however, can be silly. Catholics and Protestants battle it out in a softball game dubbed "Reformation II". On the subject of women in the ministry, First Church regular, old lady Naomi Muffin, demands "more sermons about fashion trends and thinner thighs" and wants the steeple painted pink (give me a break). Still, it is a nice little book for leisure reading. It is fun to see how Rob Suggs' artwork changed through the years

An Intriguing Glimpse of Africa
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.

As an old fan of the Tintin adventure series, I was curious to see whether this was another adventure I had never heard of. It is actually part of a new series based on diaries Tintin may have kept during his travels.

The "diary" provides interesting facts and beautiful photographs which give the reader an intriguing glimpse of a continent which remains a mystery to many people. It depicts another world, especially in this age of technological advances.

The diary touches on the geography, culture, customs and the heritage of Africa. It also highlights the plight of Africa: poverty, famine, drought and political unrest.

I liked this book because any child would find it a fascinating introduction to a great continent. The format is fun and the information concise. Adult readers will want to add it to their collection of Tintin adventures to pass on to their kids.

These Caricatures are not Endearing!

Mr. Wolfe's caricatures are gross exaggerations of the human form and may not appeal to potential doll or figure sculpters. They are remarkable specifically because they are so grotesque! Mr. Wolfe does give several hints that would benefit dollmakers - create a concave hole in the end of an appropriately-sized dowel to sculpt eyeballs directly in the face clay, or to hold a separately created eyeball in position for adhering to the face clay. I'm glad I read through the book, but it's not one I intend to keep as reference material.
