A cartoon history of brutality and intervention
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-29
Review Date: 2005-03-29
The history of the nations of the Western Hemisphere south of the Rio Grande is a violent, repressive one. The people who governed them have largely been dictatorial in nature, a large percentage of the population has been held in what amounts to slavery. The United States has often intervened, regularly with political muscle and in some cases militarily. Nicaragua is a nation that has felt the force of American domination; the phrase "banana republic" could have been coined to describe it. This book is a history of Nicaragua, using the form of cartoons, images and text.
While the presentation sometimes reaches the level of America bashing, the facts are essentially correct. The American mercenary William Walker was president of Nicaragua for some time and no person could ever achieve the presidency if they did not have at least the tacit approval of the United States. When any leader of the country dared carry out any policy that could be construed as against American interests, they were either removed or forced to recant. Anastasio Somoza was a brutal dictator who even stooped so low as to loot the relief aid that poured into the country after the earthquake in 1972. Since the book was published in 1984, there is no mention of the subsequent guerrilla war carried out by the groups known as the contras.
Knowledge of the past is an essential precondition for American citizens to make informed decisions regarding their opinion of U. S. foreign policy. This book shows some of the darker aspects of that history. While it is easy to be complacent and not consider such knowledge important, you should always keep in mind that the people of other nations know what has happened and will not forget.

Lots of fun for the musical theatre history buff. Loads of prints of the ledgendary charactures that hang on the walls of the New York City restaurant, plus stories and trivia about the ledgends portrayed. Not a book to curl up with, (if you want one of those, go for something like "The Longest Line" or "At This Theatre,") but a neat coffee table book. Reading this gives you a whole new way to appreciate a visit to the restaurant.

This book of visual and textual puns uses the names of animals to create them. Some examples are:
*) There is a picture of an ox jumping of a diving board and it is about to land on a porpoise. The caption is "Oxidentally on porpoise."
*) There is an otter is a baseball uniform about to deliver a pitch. The caption is "Striker otter."
*) There is a female dog pushing a baby carriage containing a large number of baby puppies. The caption is "Pupulation explosion."
*) There is a hippopotamus sitting on a toilet. The caption is "Hippopottymus."
The puns will delight children and adults alike. There is nothing better than a joke based on wordplay, when done well everyone can appreciate them.

Seriously funny cartoons about the foibles of love, sex and relationships
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

Relationships based on love are loaded with absurdities, contradictions, uncertainties, frivolities and irrationality. Properly handled, these qualities can be the basis for great humor, and Weldon handles them well. Using an absurd situation as a premise, he delves superficially into the complexities that are relationships. It is interesting and proper that in the subtitle he separates love, sex and relationships, as he largely tackles these situations separately.
If you are capable of laughing at the foibles of these issues, then you will enjoy this book. If you are incapable of such a thing, then you will be bored.

Cathy expresses many single girls'un-verbalized feelings. She represents women who wish they were married but have been hoodwinked by society's trend that marriage sells a woman short of her potential. If you are the type of person who is gung-ho about her career and personal achievement, you probably will not like this book. If you admit that women are different than men and that everyone has his/her frivolous side, then you may enjoy watching Cathy trying to figure out how best to survive.

I first borrowed this book from my local library in 1985, and continued to do so, always returning it late, then suddenly it was gone, no explanation from the librarian, just a stony face. Now in 1998, I got it from Amazon.com, and it's just as brilliant!!!
