Learning English can be fun!

I am an English teacher and I use this book to help my students learn English culture through expressions, vocabulary and idioms. However, I would not suggest this book to anyone who is not already at an advanced or intermediate/advanced level, because many of the words and expressions are very abstract, and as a teacher, my slower, weaker and not so advanced students would find it very difficult, and also not get the humor. And if your students cannot understand the humor then the whole book's purpose does not work! ALSO, it is a bit dated, after all it was published in 1992, but the cartoons are still really funny.

Yearbook of fashionistas
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-27
This book is amusing if you're interested in fashion. Palmer captures moments during the shows and other times of designers, models, the media, etc in a very quirky illustrating style and witty captions. The one thing that detracts from this is that this book will probably be only of interest with those people who are in 'the know' (a very cliched way to put it but I can't think of anything else!) with fashion - that is those who are in the industry, as she doesn't do straight out celebrities (don't expect to find sketches of Nicole Kidman or Beyonce preening themselves in the front row) but more the 'celebrities' of fashion like Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Polly Mellen, Anna Piaggi, etc.

This book would probably outrightly bore those who are interested in the shopping-fashion-celebrities sort of arena - instead it is more suited for those who are interested in an industry viewpoint of fashion. She pokes a lot of fun at people - nothing at all malice, but it is an entertaining book.

Editorial and "Kudzu" Comic Strips
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-06
This book is a combination of Doug Marlette's editorial comic strips and his political "Kudzu" comic strips covering the 1992 presidential election and Clinton's win. In addition, Doug has done several new strips especially for this book. There are also a few pages of text where Doug writes about Faux Bubba's and his thoughts/accounts of the '92 election (including his meeting with Bill Clinton). While it's obvious that Doug voted for Clinton and is left-of-center in his political views, the strips are mostly funny and mostly told from a southerner's prospective.

The puzzles will amuse and maybe even stump you

This book is one of those that will amuse and maybe even stump you for awhile and then remain uninteresting for years afterwards. It contains a series of drawings that are representative of a famous "figure of speech", and your goal is to determine what it is. As is always the case with such puzzles, the level of difficulty varies widely and the answers to all 29 puzzles are given at the end. However, after you discern or learn the answer, you will not find it puzzling again until enough time has past where you have completely forgotten the puzzle.

Fishing Funnies?
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-17
Having glanced at a friend's copy of this book, I have decided to buy TWO copies of it: one for myself and one for my father, a grizzled old fisherman if there ever was one. The man is a difficult laugh, but I can generally guess his reation from mine. This book, particularly the "Know Thy Enemy" section should get a few REAL laughs...

Hi! I'm Dan Younger and I drew this "comic" way back in graduate school. I have learned to draw better since, but there are a few stories in here - especially featuring my life then, that I still remember fondly. There is a decent story about drawing and Walt Kelly, as well as a few (friendly, I hope) mentions of my ex-wife.

As I remember, I "editioned" it at a Kinko's-like place and handed them out to friends. I don't remember ever selling one. It was done on 8.5 x 11 paper printed on one side, with a self cover & stapled together in my living room - or was it the dining room?

Anyway, if you buy it, look me up on the web and tell me what you think of it. I have taught cartooning in various schools, and the classes have produced their own comics, but this is the only one I did just for me. (Again, I have learned to draw better!)

I really thought the book had a good effective way of teaching French and helped a lot but if you didn't know how to pronounce anything in French then you couldn't use this book much.

Lincoln in Caricature
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-29
From Rail-Splitter to Icon is a unique and fascinating contribution to our understanding of how Lincoln was judged by the press, both here, North and South, and abroad. Through dogged and meticulous research, Bunker has combed the country for magazines largely judged ephemeral at the time but that now loom large in our understanding of popular culture -- those that featured humor and political cartoons. In this handsome book, he assesses their content and pictures nearly 200 of the Lincoln images under discussion, most of which have never been reprinted. Bunker's book easily surpasses all of the other books devoted to Lincoln in caricature [Walsh. Lincoln and the London Punch (1909); Shaw. A Cartoon History of Abraham Lincoln (1930) (which ends inexplicably in 1861); and Rockwell. Lincoln in Caricature (1946) (which is a book of plates with extended captions)] because Bunker's survey of the field is comprehensive, when the others were selective, and his historical analysis is fully informed by several generations of important Lincoln scholarship. This groundbreaking book is surely a candidate for awards. Highly recommended.
