hilarious look at the way parents react to this subject
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-04
In non-threatening and hilarious illustrations, this book underscores the way most parents totally freak out over the subject of sex when it comes to explaining it to their children.

One end of the spectrum has the parents who avoid the subject altogether, while the other end of the spectrum is pulling out charts, diagrams and videos. The goal of this book is to relax the parent and encourage them to take a straight-forward, but not overwhelming approach to teaching their kids... there are no materials for learning or illustrations to share with your kids... this is a humorous book for grownups, and not a manual on teaching the subject. A cute book to have on your coffee table or in a guest room. It's sweet illustrations will make anyone laugh and only Queen Victoria would have problems with the content. It's straight forward and honest.

Humor in Art
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
This book celebrates visual humor in its many forms: whimsy, wit, parody, irony, satire, and nonsense. Nearly two hundred reproductions (many in color) are used to illustrate humor as an art form. Various types of visual humor are traced using comic iconography found in early history down through the ages to contemporary times. Both 2-D and 3-D forms of humorous art are considered as the author explores ways in which artists transform ordinary subjects into strange and unconventional ones.

Very clever fun cartoons!

I don't know Tom Johnson, nor who he is/was. I think this is NOT the Tommy Johnson great tubist who from Los Angeles. The book is 104 clever cartoons using only musical notation as the subjects. Black and white, pen and ink. fun for composers and players, and also fun for cartoonists I would think. A fun read! A nice gift! Copyright 1974, Two-Eighteen Press, NY.

A companion volume to Tintin's adventures in India
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-21
The conceit of Tintin's Travel Diaires is that they are "based" on notebooks that Tintin may have kept as he traveled on his adventures. Tintin first visited India in his first two-part adventure "Cigars of the Pharoah" and "The Blue Lotus," and this companion volume to those two Hergé stories asks thirty key questions designed for young readers. What teachers and parents will appreciate is that these are not just questions that young readers would have after reading Tintin's adventures in India, such as "Do people still ride elephants in India?" and "Why are cows sacred to Hindus?", but questions they should asks, such as "Should we say `Indian' or `Hindu'?" and "What is an `Untouchable'?"

"Tintin's Travel Adventures: India" helps young readers explore the geography, culture, custom, and heritage of India and its people. Each two-page spread asks a question, such as "What are India's natural borders?" and answers it with three paragraphs of clear and concise text by Anne Braquet and Martine Noblet (translated by Maureen Walker). Hergé's original cartooning is used, juxtaposed with photographs showing what India is like today. One of the strengths of the Tintin Adventures has been the sense of detail Hergé brought to his work through his research. That is one of the primary reasons that Tintin became an international success and something that Tintin's Travel Adventures can build upon to add even more education into the mix along with the fun.

A humerous look at early WWII military life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-27
I've owned a copy of this book for as long as I can remember....I'm really not sure how I came to have it.

This book is the story of one Mr. Finch who's life, by way of a letter from his Uncle Sam, is changed from that of a lazy desk-jockey to a (somewhat) lean, mean Army machine.

Anyone who has an interest in the Army, WWII, or who just wants a laugh will appreciate the trials and tribulations of our dear Mr. Finch!

When "Peanuts" Ruled the World.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-15
IT'S FOR YOU SNOOPY is an older collection of selected Sunday "Peanuts" strips. The majority of the strips revolve around Snoopy. In addition, there are one or two usual "Peanuts" strips: one of Linus writing to the Great Pumpkin, a few of Charlie Brown on the baseball team, one with Charlie Brown trying to kick the football from Lucy, etc. There are also a couple of strips in this collection where Frieda gets Snoopy to go rabbit hunting with her; I found these to be of interest because when I first became a fan of "Peanuts", Frieda was never seen in strips. There isn't anything spectacular in this collection, though it does have some comic strip historical significance (because of Frieda, Woodstock doesn't exist yet, etc.) and fans of the strip should appreciate the book nevertheless.

Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-04
This is a very thurough book, with detailed information about each photomontage appearing in AIZ by John Heartfield. The book seems to be the first to provide translations of the German text on each AIZ, and offers some, but not always, enough information about each work by putting it in the historical context it originally appeared.

If you're studying Heartfield, this book is well worth your time.

Middle School Social Studies

Review Date: 2005-07-13
This book could be used as a suplement in Middle School Social Studies. It does give good visual presentation of different hair styles, clothing, and armor during medieval times. The level of drawing skills I feel would be to hard for lower elementary students.
