This book gets seven stars. At first, I think I thought it had something to do with Mad Magazine, like Spy Vs. Spy. What I found was a goldmine. Rarely do I see books dealing with geeking out on something. Gene Deitch clearly loves Jazz Music. This book documents a dope artist, blossoming into greatness through an interest in an outsider sound. His honest comments on obsesive geekdom, as well as race relations, are appreciated. A super cool gift, as well as a beautiful, beautiful book. the OilCan highly recommends.

The Cat is Back

Review Date: 2003-06-19
Great 1940s comics that capture the world of the jazz fanatic circa 1945-1950. Deitch's artwork is clever, original, somewhere between Virgil Partch and Harvey Kurtzman -- far above the amateurish efforts one associates with fanzines. Anyone familiar with the loonier aspects of record collecting will find much amusement in these cartoons (The Cat berates one guy searching a huge pile of records with, "That's the 'A' master which is relatively common!"). Deitch also drew some interesting covers, reproduced here in full color. Anyone into vintage comics, records, and/or jazz will dig this.

The packaging is a bit overkill. The width of the book is huge, but there is a lot of white space on the inside pages. A smaller size would not have detracted from the artwork, and would have made this a more affordable book. Also, nobody seems to have proofread the copy, as there are quite a few typos.

Saul Steinberg is still great, but not at his best

Review Date: 1998-09-11
Saul Steinberg is the greatest cartoonist of the 20th century. His great books e.g. "The Passport" are out of print and impossible to find. This book would be terrific had it been drawn by anybody else. But the trouble is it was drawn by Steinberg. I found his usual grace of line, modernist sensibility, drafting genius and erudite wit all there, but not in as great quantity as his earlier works. But if we can see this, it because we're seeing it with eyes he opened.

The quintessential collection of this late artist.

Saul Steinberg died on 12 May and, in preparing an appreciation for publication, I revisited some of his books, most of which are out of print, alas. This book, The Discovery of America, brings together works that have appeared over the many years that this wonderful artist appeared in The New Yorker. It's quintessential Steinberg in black and white and color, full of his businessmen, dowagers, hookers, landscapes and scary urban scenes. Steinberg was, by his own admission, a writer who drew. His work is elegant, intellectual and wonderfully humorous. This book is a fitting tribute to a great artist who brought cartoons to the walls of museums. I hope his long out-of-print titles will be back soon now that he's gone.

Everybody loves a Droodle...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-15

Even though most people wouldn't know what to call them,I can't imagine anyone who has not seen one and got a kick out of solving it. Quite simply, they are just a very simple sketch that can be drawn by anyone in a couple of seconds and represents something.The object is to determine what the Droodle represents.It's a little hard to show one ,but I'll give it a go;

A picture of an apple with 2 worms sticking out.
Ans.Worm taking date to dinner.

A large circle with 2 feet at the bottom.
Ans.Bubble Gum Champ.
Price gives some great comments on them. For instance on this one; "If you got this one,it shows you have a healthy attitude toward life and are fond of sports. However,if you prefer the alternate title:
Small Boy Throwing Baseball (at You).
you are apprehensive and nervous and should get a divorce and go live all alone in the mountains somewhere."
Or;
A square with a lot of dots beside it.
Ans. Unassembled Sandpaper.

There is another simple puzzle which is quite similar.Virtually everyone has seen these, too. They are called Plexers and usually made up of letters or words. For example:

TUNE BADwolf BADINSHAPE
TUNE
TUNE
TUNE
ANS. Tune-up...Big bad wolf ...In bad shape.
A similar book of these is listed on Amazon. "Plexers" by Dave Hammond.

As you can see, this is simple stuff, that can be enjoyed by all ages. Simple as they seem when solved; sometimes you can rack your brains over them. Then there is also the possibility of multiple solutions. Why not take the solution and ask that a Droodle be drawn; the challenge increases immensely.
Try to draw a Droodle of Ants Crawling Through Spilled Champagne.
According to the previous reviewer Price was the inventor of the Droodle as an art form. The copyrights for this book go back to 1953 and I remember having a paperback by the same author on Droodles about that time. So,these fun little puzzles have entertained us for over 50 years;and still going strong.
A greal little book to have around when things get dull.

The author, Roger Price, was a first-rank single-panel magazine cartoonist of the 'fifties, and he invented this art style--a great, funny time waster, and a neat gift book when you are fresh out of ideas and want some little thing to let that special someone with a sense of humor know that you are thinking of them.

Sketchy yet wickedly humorous cartoons and visual puns

Review Date: 2004-08-09
Drunk With Pleasure is a collection of simple, sketchy yet wickedly humorous cartoons and visual puns, all involving wine or alcohol. Drawn in a minimalist style with splashes of color, these chuckle-inducing single-panel scenes include a play on the phrase "Life is unfair!" as "Life is un verre!", i.e. a delicious drink. A glossary of wine terms to better contribute to understanding the cartoons rounds out this amusing collection especially recommended for giving wine connoisseurs a chuckle.

Very punny wine book

Review Date: 2003-12-27
Nick Wadley, an artist who has written scholarly works about 19th century French art, turns to a tongue-in-cheek book celebrating wine. Through simple line drawings and a wonderful set of inventive wine name puns, the author captures the essence of wines through creative word play. He paints wine varieties such as "leap frog milk" to denote "liebfraumilch" and "Santa million" for a St. Emilion bordeaux. He uses fanciful drawings to depict word play like "Mary had a little lambrusco" and "Vin Gogh." There is a glossary "for those who like their puns explained." This little book will delight the oenophile with a sense of humor.

This is a very fuuny book. It makes you see the lighter side of parenthood. I laughed through and through. What makes it more appealing is that over 20 years later I have experienced the same things that Lynn Johnston wrote about then.

Most new parents don't think the first 12 months of parenthood is a laughing matter...till they read this collection of 101 cartoons by Lynn Johnston. There's something about sleepless nights and babbling days that seems a lot funnier in a cartoon book.

Honestly Abe: A Cartoon Biography Of Abraham Lincoln is a novel and effective approach to introducing the life and work of Abraham Lincoln, second only to George Washington as America's greatest president to date. This compendium of engaging, challenging, and informative cartoons is further enhanced with a bibliography, a list of outstanding Lincoln web sites, and a glossary of historical and archaic terms. Honestly Abe is a sound and fascinating biography that will fascinate and inform readers young and old. Highly recommended for both school and public library acquisitions, and a "must" for students of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln.

As a Lincoln enthusiast and teacher I found Charlie B's book outstanding. The writing is entertaining, informative, and exudes a love for Lincoln. The cartoon graphics and printing are excellent. I found neither misprints nor factual errors.Overall the treatment of Lincoln is charming without being debasing. It is very readable. I wish I could produce a book as enjoyable as this one.

This manga is very fun, especially for those who already have extensive knowledge in Japanese/American politics, cultures, and economics. For those of you who don't know, its about the lives of workers in the Japanese automobile industry and the tensions, hopes and dreams felt in Japan during the 1980s. This manga captures the essence of the long passed era, and is always a fun read.

Japan, Inc by Shotaro Ishinomori

Review Date: 2004-08-24
Ever wonder how Toyota spells out a 100 year business plan while Intel keeps giving investors quarterly advisories? Shotaro Ishinomori gives an interesting perspective on Japan's economic problems and the ensuing volatility. In Japan, comic book artists often strive to achieve intellectual respectability. Hence comic books are very common among white-collar workers. Two characters- Tsugawa and Kudo are used to illustrate various economic realities such as global trade disputes, appreciation of the yen with respect to the dollar, 1973 oil crisis, deficit financing, and corporate speculative financing. Tsugawa represents a capitalist indifferent to the the little guy. Kudo clashes often with Tsugawa as he urges taking the long view and emphasizes the social utility of business. Politicians are exposed as individuals putting private gain above public interest. Ishinomori is greatly influenced by the moralists of the Meiji era. The theme of his book is that great corporations are built on long-term, ethical, and socially responsible business practices. Let's hope more western CEOs listen to Ishinomori.

Courts, criminals, juries, judges... there's humor everywhere! David Carter has penned a lot of it. I like it because I've had many of the same thoughts, in and out of court. Good humor likes company and every attorney who thinks he or she is sooooooooooo hot should spend a little time with JP and his friends.
