Caricature Books

I write this review of the Overheard series in January 2000, around 12 years after I stopped doing them and moved to Berlin, where I now live and work...and I'm pleased when I look at them again! They are still fresh and honest...I'd recommend them for advanced students of American culture! (Be sure to order an extra copy!) SC

'Them' is a classic of eastern european humor, and it's a shame the book is now out of print. Each cartoon is the perfect revenge for posting in the hall leading to any Kafkesque bureaucrat's office.

It is a little difficult to review a picture book but I will give it a try! Perez takes the Doctors profession and adds alot of humor by drawing whimsical pictures in action. My favorite was the ophthalmologist because of the wonderess display of the eye chart.All of the pictures were extremely cute and to the point. You need not be in the medical profession to enjoy this book and if you are a collector of art I think this book would fit right into your library. It would make a very interesting book for the table tops in livings rooms and dens. It also makes the best gifts for new graduates of the Medical field. I truly enjoy looking through this wonderful book and also enjoy giving it as gifts.

This book has approximately 100 full page reproductions of cartoons from the 50's decade from Playboy-many are in full color and risque - for the time-.If you enjoy playboy then this is the book for you.

I may be the only person to review this unusual academic text, since the subject is not to everyone's taste. But for anyone in journalism, communication, or sociology, this little book is a delight. The study proposes to show that political cartoons can be viewed as narrative; it applies the tools of language study to that end. It shows specifically how narrative about the candidates' characters predominated the 1988 presidential campaign, through satire and parody in visual form. It also points out the uniqueness of the political cartoon as a means of communication--it is humor, but it goes beyond humor, even to the point where humor is not the prime element. It is not text, yet it presents messages as narrative. The book is a delicious examination of the complexity of the political cartoon as a dialogue with the reader. At the price, however, it is only for the truly dedicated researcher or journalist.

This was a nice edition, and I knew it would make a nice addition to my friend's "cat library." The artist and subject were pre-sold from earlier publications, such as Shakespeare Cats, and this particular production did not let me down -- I knew when I saw it she'd be delighted with her late Christmas present. I hope there are more like it and that Amazon has them available, and ships them as quickly and in such good condition as this one.

When these cartoons appeared in my local free paper, I enjoyed them immensely, because they poked fun at things I felt deserved ridicule - the first Bush aministration, pretentious yuppies, rednecks, etc. How could a person dislike a president who made the EPA and the Secret Service swap budgets? President Bill disappeared when Clinton was elected, and I forgot about him, untill I came across a copy of this book. Sadly it's out of print now, but if you can get your hands on a used copy, it's worth a read. Should amuse any left-leaning person who remembers the 1980s.

This book is the purrfect gift for any cat lover!

Anyone who likes editorials or editorial cartoons will love this book. As someone who really became aware of politics around 1996 (I was born in 1980), I found this collection enlightening and entertaining. Mr. Bok's very incisive cartoons, coupled with brief but descriptive captions, provided a context to important events that you could never glean from a history textbook.

In his introduction, Mr. Bok provides a window into the life of an editorial cartoonist and gives tremendous insight on the importance of freedom of speech. Indeed, some of his cartoons will challenge the reader - but you don't have to agree with them to appreciate them!

Humor, political discourse, rational thinking....if you value those things, you will love "The Recent History..." Overall, a great book!

This little book, although a little more expensive, is worth it. It starts out a little slow, but get into it a chapter or two, and then watch out. Some of the very fears that I have had concerning this president and his administration are spelled out here. "Remember 9/11" goes even further and reveals some of the seemingly real "missions" of G.W. and what they would look like if put in place. Wow! What a book!!!
