Those of us Somalians who live outside our country, we often face the difficulty of finding the time and energy to teach our children their language. Books like this help us achieve this. I would recommend to all Somali parents to buy this for their children.

Small. But good, considerings its size.

To paraphrase the publisher's commentary, what makes this the student's best choice for Somali is that it is almost the only choice. It is not a bad book, but to call it a "complete" language course is a stretch.

It is, however, a good introduction for the rank beginner, such as myself. It emphasizes the aspects of pronunciation that are difficult for English-speakers, such as tone differences that signal grammatical change. It shows methodically how words and sentences are constructed and it presents dialogues for speaking. Having mastered this course, the student may want further study, perhaps by searching the offerings of American universities that have programs in African area or language studies.

This is probably one of the best books for beginners. Mr Webster makes this book well worth the price. As I started reading the book I found myself stopping to do some of the work in the book because I was so excited about the material. Once I finished the book I was amazed at just how much useful information could fit into this book, between finding your personal numbers and the colors associated with them to mandalas and to just noticing the colors around me more. I strongly recommend this book to anyone!

Love it!

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's straight-forward, easy to read, and gives practical applications. Initially, I thought it was just a book about color, but it's so much more than that. It has both a practical side, and a metaphysical side to it. But what is so good about it is that it presents things in such a way as to 'make the penny drop.'

For instance, I've read over and over about chakras, but the whole concept has just never clicked with me. But something about the way he presents it did it for me. I'm really interested in it now because I get it. He ties it in with the meaning of color in such a real world way that it doesn't just float out into the air like some sort of esoteric babble.

He presents a variety of things, both practical and metaphysical. He not only gives interesting background on color and what different colors mean in different applications, but he ties it all into things like numerology, healing, mandalas, emotional support, symbolism, magic rituals, crystals and gemstones, feng shui & how to decorate your home, and color symbolism.

I just happened on to this book by accident, when I was leaving for a trip and wanted something to read on the plane. I didn't end up reading it until 3 weeks after I got home, but I then read it in 3 days. Now, to put this into perspective, I am not a reader. It takes me *months* to read a book -- the ones that I like. The ones I don't like I don't even finish.

If you haven't guessed by now, I highly, highly recommend this book. It's one of the few books that I am going to refer to time and time again, and one of the few books that I can't wait to start applying some of the things it suggests. (I already ordered three scarves last night -- one red so that people will know I am capable of being assertive when I need to be -- one with orange so I will be more self-confident -- and one with blue so that I will be able to manage my reactions to things better.)

Tomorrow, we look for a red blouse. ;-)

The ideal book.

I wanted a book that would explain the benefits of colour and how and where to use it.This is the book I wanted. The book starts off with how we use colour everyday. It then explains interesting information on each of the colours:red, orange, yellow, green.blue, indigo, violet, pink, white, brown, black, silver and gold.

There are sections on candle burning, kombolois, how to determine your colours, life path numbers and much more. This book has a lot to offer.Could have used a few colour photos as examples but as it,its the best book I found.

A truly delightful children's book

Jane Yolen's "Commander Toad" series is a charming science fiction spoof, and an excellent children's book. The detailed, zany illustrations by Bruce Degen are the perfect complement to the witty text and off-the-wall characters. The test of any children's book is its reception by actual children, and "Commander Toad and the Space Pirates" gets full marks there. It has been requested so many times by my 5- and 3- year-old siblings that I can now recite it from memory. The text stands the test of many repetitions, and my five year old brother, just now learning to write, can often be heard to request "Mom, how do you spell 'Commander Toad'? How do you spell 'Space Pirates?'.

Boredom settles over the crew of the space ship STAR WARTS and Commander Toad has to do something quick. Lieutenant Lily, Mr. Hop, Jake Skyjumper and Doc Peepers are all unhappy. They've watched all the ship's movies-SPLASH GORDON, THE TOAD WARRIOR, INDIANA FROG AND THE LILY PAD OF DOOM-and read all the ship's books-ROBIN TOAD, THE LIZARD OF OZ, and SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN WARTS-and played a lot of croak-kay, leapfrog, and hopscotch. There is nothing to do and they're all going a little crazy. That all changes the day Commander Salamander and his pirate crew arrive. Commander Salamander boards STAR WARTS and takes everyone captive except for Doc Peepers. Only a little while after that, Commander Salamander makes Commander Toad Hop the Plank at sword point! Only Doc Peepers can save the day!

Jane Yolen is an award-winning children's book author as well as a writer of adult science fiction and fantasy. She's earned the Caldecott-given for the most distinguished picture book, the Nebula-given to the most distinguished writing in the field of science fiction and fantasy, the Golden Kite-given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the World Fantasy Award. She's written seven Commander Toad Adventures, including COMMANDER TOAD AND THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES, and COMMANDER TOAD AND THE BIG BLACK HOLE. With dozens of books written in many genres, Jane Yolen is a great author to introduce to young readers.

Fun to read out loud and filled with puns and sight gags really well drawn by Bruce Degen, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES is a blast to share with young or reluctant readers. The sentences are short and choppy, driving the story on and filling the events with laughs. The pirate talk, "Yo-ho-ho, me slithery-slees!" is top-notch and will inspire young readers to quote the lines long after the book is finished-if an adult is willing to read the passages in a properly piratical dramatization. The solution to the pirates, once revealed, is hilarious and makes perfect sense even to pre-readers who understand story and set-up that comes in narrative repetition.

The Commander Toad series, all seven books, is recommended for imaginative young readers who have already been exposed to STAR WARS, STAR TREK, and various other science fiction based television shows and movies. Jane Yolen is one of the most entertaining authors for young minds out there.

Single Dad Takes Charge of Kitchen
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-30
Do you know guys who know how to make cakes or can whip up a tasty seafood dish on the weekend when his kids come over. Well, this is a book for dads who are dads for the weekend or have the kids all week. It is also perfect for men who want to give their wives a night off from cooking for the family.

Personally, I'm very impressed by men who can cook. What woman isn't? A man who can cook is a kitchen god. I have so many memories of my father waking me in the morning and saying "breakfast is ready" or inviting people over on the weekend and making "pizza from scratch."

The Delicious chapters in this book include:

Stuff to Make it With - Shopping for the right ingredients
Stuff to Make it In - Tools that get you in and out of the kitchen fast
Fast Stuff to Make - Getting food on the table fast
Tasty Stuff to Make - Food to impress on weekends or when you have company
The Good Stuff - Company dinners
Stuff for Dessert - When a bag of Chips Ahoy won't suffice
Stuff To Clean It Up With - Quick and easy ways to clean
Stuff Worth Knowing
Stuff Your Kids Can Do - Getting kids involved in cooking

The recipes have creative titles like: "Take a Wok, Man!" This is a recipe that sounds good to me, I just need to buy a wok. I love the humor in the recipes and how the instructions are written. At the start of the recipe, there is a lot of good advice and then at the end of the recipe there are some "tips."

Some recipes include: Pete's Power Pasta Sauce, Hamburger Heaven, Pizza Night, Yer Traditional Roast Chicken and Chocolate Pancakes. Most of the Desserts are made with fast food items like Jell-O, frozen cheesecakes and Ice cream and sauces.

As far as cleaning goes, I have to agree with his ideas of a "dishwasher" being rather essential. I still haven't tried the Wetjet Swiffer, but now I'm about to go buy one. Crawling about on the kitchen floor is less and less appealing as the years go by.

Peter Wright shows a lot of wisdom in the last chapter where he discusses the pro's and con's of allowing children to help around the house. I had to laugh when I read: Show your children how to measure out the soap. He is referring to washing the clothes and let me tell you, that is one of the most important steps. I myself caused an entire room to be filled with bubbles when I was a child. I think we used half a bottle. Ahh, the days of youth.

Hey, this guy even makes Risotto, what's not to love? I doubt if he is still single, he will be single much longer. ;)

Cook Like A Mother! Clean Like A Pro!: The Single Dad's Guide To Cooking And Cleaning is a combination cookbook and homemaker skills "how to" instructional written by Peter Wright especially for men who are neophytes at the fine art of keeping an orderly home. Specifically intended for single fathers who need to quickly learn how to provide proper nutrition and a clean environment for their rambunctious offspring, Cook Like A Mother! Clean Like A Pro! offers simple, easy-to-follow instructions, parenting tips, excellent practical recipes, and solid general advice. Cook Like A Mother! Peter Wright is on a roll! I could say a lot about this book; things like, I laughed my butt off, the information was solid, he considered spelling "Mother" differently ... but I won't (past that, I guess). I'll give you two quotes from his book: "I want to provide you with the tricks and tools to either pull your own weight in the arena of cooking and cleaning or learn to be self-sufficient so you won't have to rely on the first gal that comes along with a nice set of casserole dishes -- and God knows how tempting that will be." This is from the Foreward! Nice start, eh? Another priceless observation covers cookware: He said, "Most guys would be happy with cookware they find at a garage sale, or handed down from relatives or friends. Bad idea. First of all, any protective coating will be a distant memory. Which means not only will things taste a little crappier than they should, they'll stick, and then make it difficult to clean" Has this guy got a handle on priorities or what? He has touched on things it took me years to learn the hard way. It's a keeper.

This is a very special book. Our 15 month old has enjoyed it practically since birth. He sees something new in this book every time we read it together. The photography is stunning - like you are there in person. The prose are beautifully simple, but grab all ages by making you think on the last page. Not only does this book help teach counting, but appreciation of the natural beauty around us and the importance of preserving it.

We now give as a gift to every newborn we know, and hope you will enjoy as much as we do.

This is a unique counting book (numbers 1-10) written by Kentucky author George Ella Lyon with beautiful close-up photographs taken in a forest in Kentucky by Ann W. Olson. At first glance this may appear to be just an interesting counting book. Upon further investigation it becomes clear that this book is that and much more. It is also a wonderful book to use with students of all ages when studying science. Children are naturally curious and the crisp colorful photos of bugs, nests, and wildflowers will surely spark many scientific questions. The photos complement the brief poetic text. I think that the text describing the number 10 ("Ten trees whose innumerable leaves / clean the air/ for everything / that breathes") will heighten even the youngest readers' interest in trees and their role in preserving our environment. This book will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

This book offers a marvelous and unique way to teach young children how to count. The photographs of Cave Run Lake and the Clark State Fish Hatchery offer children opportunities to feel as though they are actually there where the poem takes place. It is a great book to use in introducing forest animals and habitats of various forest animals. I was very impressed with this book. The rhyming nature of the text and the breathtaking photographs make it very easy for young readers to get "lost" in the woods while learning to count to 10. Excellent resource for teachers! (Especially KY teachers)

We just visited our local Children's Museum and the book was part of a library within a large, interactive display about road and bridge construction. My 3 year-old son was more interested in the book than the display! I highly recommend this to any parent for their toddler. The text and illustrations are basic but captivating enough to educate even a parent about different bridges - past and present - in our world. Great!

I took a beginners' sewing class that taught me the basics of sewing, and as my first solo project, I decided to make curtains for my living room and kitchen. I got practically every book that the library had on the topic of curtain-making, and I can tell you that this was the best one for an extreme novice.

The authors make very few assumptions about the reader's sewing ability. They expect that you know how to operate a sewing machine, that you know what a seam is, and that's just about it. Everything else is explained in easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. And, they cover a variety of different treatments, which is nice if you want to do something simple that doesn't just involve flat sheets of fabric hanging from your curtain rod.

I decided finally to buy this one, because I wound up checking it out from the library so often. Definitely worthwhile for any beginner sewer who wants to make curtains.

This is a very good overview book with enough details to get the beginner going. Takes one from zero networking knowledge to the point where they can understand many aspects of data networking, and leaves them at a point where additional research can be self-directed.

Many of the callers on our tech support hotline would benefit from this one.

If you're already a year or two into networking, this isn't for you... but for a rank beginner, it's great.

I am an aspiring beginner pianist, and this book is for a beginner much better than all the other blues / rock compilations which I browsed or purchased, because the author manages to start with more easy left hand combinations, which are then gradually developed. There is real thought in this (even if you might not realize that at the beginning) and obviously a lot of teaching experience. A great book and for its price a tremendous value.

I like David's commentary on the tape; these things are all very helpful. This book was so good that I am interested in getting some of David's other books.
