Great Series to Develop Love of Reading in Boys

My nephew aged 6, was having trouble with reading, and worst showed no interest in books. I bought these books for him because they were recommended to me by a librarian. Like magic he became interested in reading these, and his reading took off. My sister-in-law then gave these books to a friend of my Nephew's who was having difficulty with reading at school, and the same thing happened with him as well. I would recommend these to anyone with a 6-8 year old boy who would like to see their child reading better, and reading more!

A great book for early readers

This is the type of book kids love to read! It is a little spooky and a great adventure. My 7 year old son really enjoyed it. He reads it over and over again. The "Eek! Stories to make you Shriek" series is a very good way to create an interest in reading to your child.

Highly recommend this book.

I bought this book to read to my 4 year old. He LOVED it. It has just the right amount of suspense and "scare" to capture the imagination but won't cause nightmares.

I could not believe my 7-year-old son's reaction to this book. We've read a lot of books together, but I've never seen him act like this before. I read Dragon Breath to him. Then, for the FIRST time ever, he picked it up and read it himself. Again and again! I loved seeing the beginning of a love for reading. Now if I can just find other books that he loves as much...

This story, as well as all the Dragon books, is a great introduction to independent reading for young readers. The sentence length and word choices are very manageable for young readers. But unlike many "easy readers", the stories are actually very nice, with a real plot and resolution. At least my child was interested enough in the story to stick with it until the end, and he felt satisfied with the ending. Most of the dragon books have a few short chapters (a couple of pages each), with very appealing drawings and plot. These are the best transition to early chapter books that I havea found.

Super Halloween Book!

I first became acquainted with this book 3-years ago. I was perusing the library holiday selections, and thought the short stories in Dragon's Halloween might entertain my son. William was only 2 at the time, and although a bit young to read all 3-stories in one sitting, he appreciated them individually. At no time was he scared, but highly amused. I read this book probably 20-times the first time it came into our home. Each story takes about 2-minutes to read aloud, so altogether, 6-minutes in total.

When I saw that Dragon's Halloween was available in paperback, I just had to have it, and I haven't regretted the purchase. The book's been well loved, and although a Halloween book, it's been read throughout the year.

Cute story for the Halloween holiday and a nice way to introduce young children to the idea of chapter books. There are other books in the "Dragon" series, so readers can revisit the character in other settings if they enjoy him in this one.

That Dragon, he is the cutest dragon and this is a great story. He is so clever with the jack-o-lantern and for anyone who's walked through the dark wood at night while the wind blows can identify with this. It's a great story for kids. I have all of Dragon's books and my child and I like them all. Don't hesitate, buy this book!

What a wondeful and cute little quick read. For I am a huge fan of movie novelizations and I really enjoyed this. Even though it was short in pages, it gave you clear thoughts and visulas about the book. I could really imagine the horse races and when the characters were talking to one another. This only took me only two hours to read, so it's pretty short. When I read this, I saw practically the whole movie. This has every scene in the movie, not wanting you to miss out on it. This is a well written novelization that when you finish reading it, you'll go straight to see the movie. Inside, are movie stills which you can get a clear idea of the movie. Read this one folks, if you're a big fan of horses and Dakota Fanning!

Hope you Enjoy! If you liked this, you may like;

Ever since I saw the movie "Dreamer" I wanted to read the book by Kathy Hapka. This is a story about a girl my age and this book is based on a true story.
Cale Crane lives with her family on a horse farm with no horses. Her dad trains racehorses. One day one of the horses has an accident on the track. Everyone thinks that they should put the horse to sleep but Cale convinces her dad to nurse it back to health. The horse's name is Sonyador, which means Dreamer in Spanish.
It takes a while but Sonya's injuries heal. Cale and her dad start training Sonya to race again. Along with her dad's friends, Balon and Mandolin, they start training Sonya.
The book has a lot of exciting race stories, twists and much more. Cale thinks Sonya can win The Breeders' Cup. Sonya has enough experience as a racehorse to qualify for consideration by the judge's panel, but Cale has to convince them to let Sonya run in the race.
The rest you have to find out on your own. There is a lot more exciting events that I haven't told you about. So to read `'Dreamer"" to find out.
On a scale of one to ten I give this book a ten. Anybody who likes animals or horses would like this story. Also if you like to laugh you would enjoy this book.

I actually bought this back in 1995 after I had played in a garage band for about a year. I had "played by ear" and never learned to read music. I picked this up with intentions of expanding our band and then put it aside as life got in the way and the drums went in storage. So, fast forward to 2008 and the kit is out of storage and set up with some new hardware. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! It lays down the basics in an easy-to-follow format and then converts that to sheet music... I CAN READ MUSIC NOW! I was able to get through the entire book in less than 2 weeks and am proficient at fills and grooves, I never did that after 3 years of playing by ear. The CD tracks are great and easy to follow. The lead-out counting gets the beat in your head before the sticks even move. The ONLY suggestion I'd make with this book is to get a good quality metronome to play along with. I'd couple this with another book, "picture yourself drumming" which is a bit more extensive in the descriptions and methodology. Another great choice would be "All about drums", again, great teaching method and some real sheet music and examples of popular songs in that. No complaints here, just order the book and get practicing!

Great Book to Start With. The Easiest Guide for Beginners.

I had absolutely no musical background, but I learned basic rock drumming by using this book together with the video guide Drum Basics Step One and Two by Sandy Gennaro. The authors' instructions are easy to understand and follow, and you don't have to know how to read music to start playing. I would strongly recommend using these materials with a Yamaha DTXpress, and practice, practice, practice.

I started drumming about 2 months ago with a basic set, Tommy Igoe's 'Getting Started on the drums' dvd and this book. The book is endless pages of exercises that gradually builds in difficulty. It's great. Each new pattern gets you using all four limbs, and are easy to modify for more practice (open/closed hi hats, crash vs hi hats, etc). It's got sycophated patterns, drum fills, and stuff on establishing a 'groove' with a band/bass player. Not the end-all of drum books, but perfect for beginners.

Edited for little kids but with the same character as the original

When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

When all the characters in the imaginary world of Winnie the Pooh go on their day to day mischiefs, forgetting a friends special day, it makes one see how cartoon characters really portray real life situations. The full page of colors allows one to sit back and get the satisfaction of a children's book. Yet this book not only addresses a child's awareness nor is it an entertainment instrument but as well as a joyful piece of literature for any age group to admire

This little book is an exact reproduction of a chapter 6 in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.

Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these 10 "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books for infant/toddlers.

Eventually she finds the perfect pet in a surprise place in a warm story which celebrates family relationships as much as it understands a young child's search for love. This board book will appeal to the young beginner who has some reading skills.

Emma's Pet is a very cute story about Emma's search for a big, soft, cuddly pet. In her search she tries all sorts of animals. First she finds a bug, but it isn't cuddly. Then in order she finds a mouse, bird, frog, snake, fish, dog, and turtle. Each one has some problem, some reason why it won't make the perfect pet. The mouse is too small; the bird is too busy, etc. So Emma gets sad. Then she suddenly sees `the biggest, softest, cuddliest thing she had ever seen. (turn page) It was her father.' She then asks him if he will be her pet, and he asks if she will be his. `And she hugged her new big soft cuddly pet. And it hugged her right back.'

This book is very sweet, and has beautiful illustrations. I really like it.

My daughter loves Emma's Pet. When I read it to her, I substitute her name for Emma's name and her cat's name for the cat character's name. At the end of the book where Emma hugs her daddy, my daughter gets up from my lap and gives me a hug. My daughter is 19 months old. Next to "Guess How Much I Love You" it is my favorite book -- and it is one of her favorites too.

A little boy who doesn't like to read much is entranced by these Jack Sparrow books. They're well written for kids with a sense of adventure. Like the Hardy Boys or a dozen other series before them, they deliver a consistent and familiar character in cleverly worked plots. The one thing I'd like to change would be to add few more illustrations. All you get here is the illustration on the cover.

I question whether Rob Kidd actually exists. For the Disney people to have come up with William Kidd would have been too obvious. So they came up with Robert, which is just as 17th century sounding a name as William.

This being said my nephew seems to love these books, which is good. He seems to have little interest in the true literary swashbuckling classic "Treasure Island," which is unfortunate. I do not think, however, that we should blame Disney and its team of Kidd writers for that...yet.

As I said, my nephew loves this series and while they are not R. L. Stevenson they are mildly entertaining and not long, so no a lot of time is consumed reading them. There are some definite holes in the plots and inconsistencies but they are not the kind of thing that 9-year-olds typically tend to overlook.

I would love to be reading something of more literary merit with my nephew but that is not to be, not at this time anyway. In the end it is not the worst book you could choose to bond with a child over.

My daughter loves this series of books - the biggest problem we have is that she won't stop after one chapter. She's 5, so we do most of the reading, she'll read a paragraph or two, but we do that's it for now. It won't be long before she'll be re-reading them herself. She and her sister love playing fairies now, it's been great for her developing her imagination and her creative play has flourished lately.

We started with book 1 of the Rainbow Fairies and are now on the Weather Fairies Series. I highly recommend these books.

Fern the Green Fairy is book #4 in a terrific read-to-me chapter book series. I think 4- to 6-year-old girls are the target audience. In the series, two girls vacationing on "Rainspell Island" discover a black pot at the end of a rainbow. Through each book, they find a "rainbow fairy" and return her to the pot. Once all 7 are found, color will return to "Fairyland." A wonderful mix of two girls' determination and imagination.

Every child will love this book even if they are not particularly interested in fire stations. This is the story of a little boy who is convinced by a mischevious friend to stowaway aboard a firetruck and follow the firemen to a fire at a paint factory. There are wonderful, colorful illustrations of the little boy and girl getting so covered with paint that their parents don't recognize them, and then taking big sudsy baths with huge bubble and splashes of paint when they get home. The children I know who love this book enjoy both the adventure of the plot and the vivid illustrations.

We love the books by this pair (Munsch and Martchenko). The Fire Station was an immediate hit with my soon to be four year old. Not only does it have the requisite fire engine, but the kid characters are curious, smart, adventurous and have relate-to personalities. The writing is inventive and colorful, is great for read-aloud, and doesn't talk down to kid readers. Martchenko's illustrations are great.

This is a great story for kids who love fire engines, kids who are irrepressible, or kids who know another kid who just won't take no for an answer.

Michael's friend Sheila won't let the word "no" stop her; not from Michael, and not from any of the adults. She wants to see the fire station so she takes Michael in with her and asks for a tour. The friendly fireman agrees, but then Sheila wants a ride in the fire engine and is told "of course not." So, Sheila gets in the engine anyway (dragging Michael along despite his protests), and wouldn't you know it, the alarm goes off, and the two of them are part of a huge downtown fire detail.

Martchenko's vibrant pictures, as in so many books he does with Munsch, are glorious. And the ending can lead to a great discussion with your child about learning a lesson, and how some people have more trouble doing so than others. The two children have such definite personalities, Michael the insecure worrier and Sheila clearly on her way to thrill-seeking sports such as glacier skating.

This is one my kids asked me to read them many times over.
