Never too old to read children's books, these were my favorites and I collected several as a cherished memory. With all the electronic toys for kids these days it is refreshing to read about what kids used to do for fun. It teaches that communing with nature and animals provides a healthy interest in the bigger world they we eventually support ourselves in.

Billy and Blaze books were my favorites as a child!

I can still remember sitting in the children's reading area of our public library (about 20+ years ago!) reading every Billy and Blaze book I could get my little hands on! If you have a child who loves horses and adventures, you need to purchase this and other books in the series. The books are easy to read with the right amount words to keep a youngster's attention, and the illustrations are perfect!

This book is perfect for the very young horse lover it is easy to read and has wonderful pictures. It is a story of one boy and his pony who helps another boy with his pony. My 4 year old grand-daughter loves it. All of C. W. Anderson books are a pleasure to read for both the young and old horse lovers. I have enjoyed them since I was a child. The pictures are almost as good as a photo. I recommend this book to all horse lovers.

Parents and children alike will love reading over and over again this charming story about Mulligan, a cat in a bookstore who seems to be running the show, and takes his position very seriously!

While a puppet show for young customers catches Mulligan's eye, he is alarmed to discover the presence of a big green bird on the stage. Naturally, Mulligan springs into action, causing the expected bruhaha!

Well, in the end young readers will be amused to see how Mulligan is so satisfied that he had done a good job.

The illustrations are wonderful, making the bookstore look like a very inviting place, indeed! By all means, invite this kitty into your own home.

This is a GREAT book for kids - my 18 month old daughter LOVES this book and I am lucky if I can get through pre-nap time or pre-bed time reading without having to read this book aloud more than three times.

The book is written so that there is the right amount of text and pictures on each page to hold a small attention span captive long enough to read the entire book. My daughter enjoys and understands the plot, the protagonist/antagonist characters, and happily points out the mommys, babies and animals; she especially likes shaking her little finger and saying "No no no" and "uh oh" to the character in the story who tries to enter the bookstore.

This book is also good to use as a tool for exposing a child to a second language; I can easily point to things and ask my daughter to show me the gato, the libro, the ventana, etc.

If you are looking for a book that is the next step after board books for younger children OR a first step with a beginning reader....this is it!

Happy reading and remember.....every book store needs a Bookstore Cat!

A fun storybook.

BOOKSTORE CAT is a nice little story with colorful, fun pictures full of interest. And a surprisingly good plot for a learn-to-read book! The author has obviously had a personal relationship with a cat, as she's captured Mulligan's personality and "priorities" very well. What intrigues me is the whole concept of "Step into Reading" books. This is a Step 1 book for the earliest readers. (There are four steps.) If you're new to them, as I am, let me tell you there are a LOT of titles in the series (listed at the back of the book). Some are Sesame Street books, Thomas the Tank Engine, Arthur, and more. If you have a preschooler, you might want to look into these.

The information in Born to be a Butterfly is easy to read and the pictures are crisp, colorful and catches the eye, which draws the reader in. Our household typically loves to read DK books because the pictures are very interesting. My small complaint about Born to be a Butterfly (and also pre-level 1 DK reader "On the Move.") is that some of the photos are across both pages. The crease in the middle makes it difficult to see the whole image in a few cases. A good example is on pages 18-19,where the picture of a chrysalis is in the middle of both pages, cut up by the page crease. It is a small complaint, because the text for born to be a butterfly is great and the pictures are fantastic.

Great pictures.

The pictures in this book are clear and up close. You can really see the butterfly's probiscus and other details. It's a great book for the budding scientist or a pre-school/kindergarten classroom.

I have always thought that the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is just amazing. In this story, a butterfly flits from flower to flower and looks for a leaf where she can lay her eggs. The photography is stunning and you can actually see the caterpillar growing inside the egg. Once the caterpillar hatches, she eats and eats and eats.

As the caterpillar gets bigger and bigger, she sheds her skin until finally she looks for a sturdy leaf and hangs upside down. The outside skin turns hard and inside, she is turning into a beautiful creature. One day the chrysalis splits open and a new butterfly emerges to dry in the sunshine.

On the last page, there is a picture word list and your child can sign and date the back cover to remind them of their accomplishment when they are able to completely read this book on their own.

Educational!

These sets contain 10 books that each tell a very short story with a funny ending through repetition. Illustrations are done well, characters are memorable. Child feels a sense of accomplishment as the set contains a chart with stickers for each book completed, a certificate of completion and a "BLANK" book for the child to author/illustrate their own book. Set also contains a parent guide. Our son loves these books... highly motivated him into a reader. He is the top reader in his kindergarten class and now has the love of books/reading that will pull him along through his education at a heightened pace.

I bought these books for my grandson who is in Kindergarten. After changing schools mid-year he was slow to grasp reading. I thought these books might be just his level and because the adult reads a summery of the story first he has found books he can read. The confidence these books gave him to continue was amazing. He now has gone one to slightly harder books but he still loves these.

We have purchased other Brand New Readers sets, and have never been disappointed yet. Our kids (5 1/2 year old son and almost 3 year old daughter) love the simple stories and illustrations, and while our son is sounding out the words, his little sister is enthusiastically shouting out the story based on the picture clues and memorization. They both feel a huge sense of accomplishement when they read to us, and we all love the humor used in the stories. Move over Dick and Jane; Brand New Readers make learning how to read fun!

This book is a great read for people of all ages. Whether your interested in learning more about "The Rock" or need some background information on it, this is the one book for you.

From the colorful pictures scattered throughout the pages to the easy to read layout, you will find yourself immersed in the horrific atmosphere that is Alacatraz.

Few books manage to capture so many elements that make a book sucessful like Breakout! Escape From Alcatraz does. I guarantee you will feel as if you've actually walked through Alacatraz and know exactly why they call it, "The Rock".

I was previewing this book for my 2nd grade classroom and became completely enthralled in it! It's a great adventure/mystery story sure to capture the attention of any child who likes action and suspense! It creates great imagery of Alcatraz and leaves the reader with an eerie feeling of not knowing whether these men made it or drowned in the bay. It's definitely one of my students' favorites in the classroom.

Review Date: 2005-01-28
This book outlines in vivid historical detail the legendary escape of three men from the most inescapable prison in U.S. history. The book also explains a brief history of the island of Alcatraz in addition to a brief account of its final days. One of the major themes of this book is that not everyone will be shut up. Out of every prison, or every situation, there is a way out, and there is an escape if one is only willing to take the risks.

Along with colorful illustrations which tell a story by themselves and photographs which provide historically accurate detail, the book also tells an exciting though quite short, true story about the legendary island of Alcatraz. The text is not overrun with needless detail nor is it too general. What I liked best is that by the end of the book, the reader feels as if he or she has just been given a tour of the island prison.

I think Escape From Alcatraz Island was a great book because it had alot of adventure, and I could picture in mind what was going on.also I think it must have been really hard getting chased by a gang through san fransisco near the dwarfs pier,I could probably imagine what it was like locked up in a cell at night in Alcatraz, having to find away to get back home during the morning.

My kids just adore the bugville critters books. I've read Go To School and Have A Sleepover so many times to them and they keep asking for it! You must get these books for your kids. They are the best picture books, in my opinion. In this story, Buster and his friend Sarah go to Garden Box Farms. At the farms, they meet a new friend Tim and learn about fruits and vegetables. The story has a wonderful positive message with good pictures that illustrate the story too. I highly recommend.

The Bugville books are perfect! Buster's antics are hillarious and the story is heart-warming and refreshing with its positive messages about friendship and family. Any parent will relate and love these. The illustrations are intriguing!

The story is based on the day Buster and his friend Sarah visit a nearby farm. I would highly recommend this and my kids love it. Every time I read the story to them they are delighted and listen happily. My youngest loved the bright colorful pictures, and the story length was perfect. My oldest loved reading about Buster's day at the farm. It was one book they could read and enjoy TOGETHER, without anyone getting frustrated or bored.

I just bought two more copies for friends of mine. We'll be adding more Bugville books to our collection soon.

I bought this book in conjunction with a very very primary Italian language course, and ended up getting more from the book than I did from the course. The book is well laid out in the sense that every chapter is the logical followup to the previous one, and you get a great sense of confidence because it's such a great teacher, and makes it so easy to get to love the language. By halfway through the book, I was able to hold conversations with native Italians. I must find out if there's a similar book on Spanish!!!

Although I speak Molise Dialect this book really helped and is helping me on my formal Italian. My father Henry DiOrio who was born in Italy and speaks Italian, Swahili, Hebrew, and English fluently says this is a great book to use if you are someone who wants to start learning Italian. I am using this book in a night school class I am currently enrolled with my friends Sandro DiFrangia and Tony Rinella, two other Italophiles who also share a high opinion of this great book. We're a couple of seniors dragged kicking and spamming into the Computer Age. This book, Byte Me, helps to express the rage and confusion we have experienced, and produced great hiccuping gulps of laughter in between. Give it to all the computer friends you know

Byte Me! disproves the theory that computers and comedy don't go together. Just to be able to laugh at something I generally find so frustrating was a great relief--now I no longer have to take it out on random pedestrians. Robert Libbon is a very clever writer, who manages to convey real information while making you laugh. I look forward to his next work

A very funny book mocking the computer industry as a whole.

The first time I saw the book Byte Me! I thought it was another one of those 'For Dummies...' titles that helps newbies learn whatever subject they need in complete layman's terms. Not until I picked up the book to peruse the inside contents did I find out what a very funny book it was. Byte me is one of those rare humor books that manages to walk that fine line of good humor and being totally biting sarcasm that pervades most other humor writers of this genre. The author, Robert P. Lippon somehow manages to put in enough factual information with the humor in such a way that almost anyone who has dealt with a computer and it's problems can understand. Reading through most of the book, I saw a lot of things that he wrote that seems to be ironically true about the computer industry when you think about it, stuff like how some tech support lines manage to never answer your call until you finally decide to hang up. Overall this book is a very high reccomendation for anyone who has had to deal with the ups and downs that come with computers or has yet to. Plus if you're looking for a holiday gift or something that will be enjoyed by almost anyone for a special occasion it's almost certain that they'll enjoy this book. For me, this book is just the perfect read while waiting for that tech support guy at IBM to answer my call

Since you have a computer, this book is NOT an option!

Comedy Central and Libbon have hit the nail on the head! Rarely will you find a book that will make you laugh out loud while reading in a room full of people. This book is full of great "bits" regarding the futile efforts to contact a human working for the Tech Support area of your favorite software company as well as a great section on how to exact your revenge from customer service. You will find yourself shaking your head in agreement while you hold your stomach with laughter. Have a good laugh at modern society as well as at yourself with this book. Kudos Libbon!!!!
