my son loves this book. he is 3(going on 30) and asks me to read it atleast once a week. i find it easy to follow if your child is following along in the english version. he has a great memory so he remembers the pics and when i am reading he is associating what he remembers to what i am saying and can understand most of the book. the use of what is on the pages in image and the words are very useful in introducing the language to a beginner. it actually helped me in my spanish 2 class!!! it is a fun and easy read, even for the tongue tied.

Excellent starter Spanish book

Unlike with Dr. Seuss, P.D. Eastman's books are so simple that translating them into Spanish is generally pretty idiot-proof; my son enjoys this book every bit as much in Spanish as he does in English. I would recommend it not only for preschoolers being raised with both languages, but even for older kids who are starting out with the language and remember the book in English. This is just the kind of simple, entertaining repetition that is great for building up basic vocabulary, at any age.

This is a beautiful children's book but it is not only for little kids. When I first ordered the book, it was as a birthday present. My friend loved it so much I ordered another copy for myself. Please note that neither my friend nor I are under 18 years of age. We have both read the book together and love it thoroughly. Besides the beautiful and colorful art on every page, the story is heartwarming and interesting.

A boy draws a picture of a cow flying which his father scoffs at. The drawing takes to the wind when a gust catches it, bringing it to the dairy farms of America. The cows on the farm see this picture and decide to try to fly. Soon an entire herd of cows is taking to the sky! It's unfortunate that no one except the boy saw the flying cows, as everyone was too busy looking at the ground.

The story has a really great ending, good rhyming in each stanza, and a rich message that will uplift your heart. I highly recommend this book.

I have to admit the majority of children's books on the market aren't worth the time to read them because they are filled with mediocrity. I don't know why people think that when something is labeled as "children's" it has to be dumbed down. With that said, COWS CAN'T FLY is not one of those books.

The book, though short and simple like most children's books, is accompanied by vibrant and lively illustrations that engage the imagination. The story revolves around a young boy who draws a picture of cows flying. Everybody knows that cows can't fly and even his father calls the drawing absurd. However, a gust of wind blows the picture to a pasture where it is discovered by a herd of cows. The cows see it and to their amazement find that they can fly. The boy sees them, but no one else does because they're too busy looking at the ground.

What a great message! Life's an adventure and if we believe everything people tell us and never try new things, we will never reach the heights we are capable. Anyone read Plato? It's the Parable of the Cave from the Republic, but told for kids. You know a book has to be good if it relates to ancient Greek metaphysics, yet is comprehendable by children.

Simply Wonderful!

Cows Can't Fly is a delightful, imaginative tale all pre-schoolers will love,. This silly, funny story is told in short, four line rhyming passages and accompanied by large, expressive illustrations that will charm and amuse your youngsters. The simple rhyming pattern makes it easy for kids to "help" you read and they can use the colorful pictures to find the right rhyming word. A terrific book that kids will want to hear over and over again and a great addition to all home libraries.

Dawn is about to meet her pen pal who is also logan's cute cousin! She feels like she's not good enough so she gets herself a bizzare makeover and tries to be someone she's not. But at the end of the book, she starts being herself again and gets along fine with him. Mary Anne was being a bit superficial in the book and not acting like her sweet self at all, but it's still a good read.

Dawn's Big Date is one of those books you can read over and over again, and still be entertained. Dawn is finally going to meet her penpal, Louis, who is also Logan's cousin from Kentucky. Before he comes to Stoneybrooke, Mary Anne gives a FEW hints and suggestions to Dawn about how she should look when Louis sees her, what make-up she should wear, stuff like that. Dawn bends over backwards before Louis arrives, picking out new outrageous clothes, tons of make-up, and fancy new hairstyles, just so she will give Louis a good impression. But when he finally arrives, he doesn't seem to like the new Dawn. Uh-oh... The side plot of this book is very good as well. Norman Hill is an overweight kid, who is being constantly teased by his sister and friends, and hounded by his parents. The baby-sitters want to help Norman out, but how? Then Stacey suggests that Norman tears one of his sister's mean drawings, and he begans to feel some self-respect, which is a tremendous help. Overall, this book was excellent. One of my favorite BSC books ever. Read it!

It's about this princess who saves the day, and I can tell she likes skating. I liked the way the author described the "Looking Glass" pond where she skated. It's kind of blue and the back of the book shows what it looks like too. The animals in the story talk and I liked that. There are boys in it too, so boys could like it also. If you are an animal lover, you will love it. If you are not an animal lover I still think you would like it. Kids and grownup would like it because my grandma says that she liked it.

The Jewl Kingdom seems to be mix of Oz and Narnia. I would really love to live in one of the country's as one of the princesses. I truly can't decide which one. The Red Mountains where my advisor is Hapgood the dragon and I have a little pet hugaboo. The Greenwood where my castle is a treehouse and my advisor is Arden the unicorn and there are lots of elves and faries. The Blue Lake where my advisor is Zazz the butterfly and I have lots of water sprites and Gilliwags and a special Sea Monster. The White Winterland where my advisor is Finley the white fox and it always snows. Each Princess has there own special magic tool given to them by the Great Wizard Gallavant. Roxanne's is a belt which temporarialy makes her invisible. Emily's is a pan flute which can make her bigger or smaller until the next turn of the sun. Sabrina's is a pouch of magic dust which can make her fly. Demetra's is a magic mirror which can show her anything she wants three times a day. If the Wogglebug film is successful enough I will make a series and the Jewl Kingdom will be one of the places he visits to improve his vast knowledge.

ONCE UPON A DREAM: A DELIGHTFUL DISNEY TREAT FOR FANS OF ALL AGES
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-21
Once upon a time, before Ariel, Jasmine, and Belle, three Princesses ruled Supreme in the Disney Kingdom:
Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora/Briar Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty). This original, classic Princess Trio is celebrated in a delightful and entertaining Books and CD Box set.

The packaging may be pink (meaning the item is pidgeonholed as a product for "young girls") and the story presentation is brief (again pidgeonholing: as an item for "young readers") but this is actually a treat for fans of "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- fans of all ages. I don't have little girls/children. I purchased this simply because I love "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- and the price is extremely affordable.

I found the box the books and CD came in to be the perfect way to store and care for the books. The box easily fits on to a shelf of my entertainment center; so it should also fit easily on to any bookshelf. The books are 24 page paperbacks, but quite sturdy and nicely illustrated; although the cover illustration for the "SNOW WHITE" book makes Snow White and her Prince look like dorks!!

The three stories are all on one CD. The CD almost fell out of the box when I opened it. I put the CD in a jewel case, and downloaded it into my computer as well to make for easier use.

The stories are brief, (not quite the same as the larger and longer cherished Book and LP Record Series from my own childhood; but I'm still completely enchanted) so certain elements of the Disney plots (the mice making a dress for Cinderella, The Seven Dwarfs Dance Party with Snow White, and the good fairies making a birthday cake for Aurora and cleaning the cottage with magic wands) are eliminated. Still, I was amazed at how well the spirit and the essence of these Disney films is captured on a brief 36 minute CD. True fans will notice happily familiar musical underscoring over the narration of "CINDERELLA" and "SLEEPING BEAUTY." No songs from "SNOW WHITE" are included, but this story features a particularly vigorous alternate musical
underscoring, and is the best of the CD adaptations. However, "SLEEPING BEAUTY" is my favorite Disney fairy tale.

The narration is quite lively and the voice actors for the characters are superb; particularly for "SNOW WHITE." The voice actors are not the same as those in the actual films, but sound so similar that they will certainly evoke plesant memories.

Ilene Woods is heard singing "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" from the film Soundtrack of "CINDERELLA", and beautiful soprano Mary Costa sings "Once Upon A Dream" and "I Wonder" from the "SLEEPING BEAUTY" Soundtrack.

Absolutely awesome

We purchased this read-along set for our three-year-old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. These are probably her favorite stories that we've purchased for her so far.

The collection itself is quite nice - Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in three separate books and one CD. Currently, only Cinderella is available for individual purchase. The box it came in was a piece of cardboard junk that was oversized and took up more space than it should have. We tossed it and are keeping the books in the same pile as the rest of her read-alongs and the CD in a jewel case of its own.

While it is nice to cut down on the number of discs to keep track of, the 3-in-1 set up is a little hard, because unless I program my daughter's CD player to just play one story, it will play all three, one right after another. Usually, this isn't a big deal - it gives me about 36 minutes of uninterrupted peace - but if we even suggest that she only listen to one of the three, she has an absolute fit. To her, the three stories HAVE to be listened to consecutively.

So, we like the collection, the packaging was pathetic, and the single-disc can create a few problems, but overall it was a very good buy. I would like to see the individual stories offered separately, though, so we could have some choices in what we decide to purchase.

As a former elementary school librarian, I heartily recommend this audio book. It's beautifully read by Ioan Gruffudd (TV's Horatio Hornblower - more great audio books he's narrated!) and should be enjoyed by a wide range of listeners, even through high school-age students.

The book is a Dorling Kindersley publication, so it's chock-full of visual information and provides outstanding explanations of medieval culture, terms, and expressions. The subject matter ties in with several topics, including folk tales, British culture, adventure, and history. The tape and book should encourage lively classroom discussions.

I can visualize playing this audio book during classroom art time or as a reward. It could also be the inspiration for a classroom play. And, of course, it's a wonderful purchase for children or grandchildren for home enjoyment. Best of all, the price is quite reasonable and delivery couldn't be easier.

My daughter and I have been reading (and re-reading!) the DK Classics (of which "Robin Hood" is part of) for several years, since she was 5. These books are very colorful, with lots of illustrations and photos of genuine artifacts, maps, and people from the era in which the story is set. Side panel text gives background information about the author, pictures and story. These "additions" (which do not detract from, but only enhance the story) help the young reader (and the adult too!) put the story into context. It is like getting both a classic and a pictorial history book rolled into one! The text is easy to read. My daughter is now 9, and reading the books on her own. Not only has she developed an appreciation for classic literature, but for history as well. These are great books for parents to read with their children. I highly recommend them!

Classic story, well told.

Review Date: 2001-06-11
Like most people, I've heard the Robin Hood story many times. No real surprise there! What makes this rendition unique is Mr. Gruffudd's wonderful voice, the book that doubles as a resource, and, of course, the wonderful story of a man more determined to do what was "right" over what was "legal".

Mr. Gruffudd just has a way with British accents. Robin's band of men apparently come from all over the UK - Cornwall, Irish, King's English accents (plus more that I couldn't easily identify) were used. And of course, Mr. Gruffudd's natural Welsh accent told the story.

The book was great. Lots of pictures, lot of sidebars of information. From obsolete jargon to modern pictures of people in costume, these pages in the book help to explain a lot.

The story, of course, is a classic. I would caution parents of sensitive children to consider editing the last chapter or so. Instead of ending the story with the "happily ever after" once Robin and Marian are married, this book follows Robin until his death at the hand of his cousin, who betrays him.

All in all, it was highly enjoyable. A definite recommend!

My two daughters (ages 2 and 4) request this book be read--at least once a day (along with all the other "Ready-to-Read" books we bought for them). They especially get excited when it's time to go under the sea with Dora. I think this book is probably geared toward the preschool/beginning grade school set. It has big words and colorful pictures. The stories are simple and not too long.
Certain words have little "pictographs" with the word that it's for directly underneath it in smaller print. I suppose this is to help the child learn to read these certain words. Since my daughters are still pretty young (the oldest is now just learning the sounds different letters make; she already can recognize all the letters), we haven't really tried to use these little pictures in that way. Although, we've read this story so many times to them that they "read along" by reciting from memory certain parts of the story. All Dora the Explorer books are great fun for the kids because it involves them in the story much like the TV show does.
I highly recommend it.

Another Good Dora Adventure - a review of "Dora in the Deep Sea"
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-14
We like "Dora in the Deep Sea". My children like it because it has a pretty good story and because it is about Dora, Boots and Pirate Piggy. I like it because it is a good read-aloud, has lots to point out and talk about, and because it allows for a different sorts of interactivity depending on age.

In that regards, Amazon suggests this book for the 4 to 8 age range, but I think it is much more versatile than that. For example, for babies you can read the story and talk about what animals are in the picture and what color they are. [There are seagulls, a variety of silly fish, octopuses, sea anemones, eels, crab, starfish, clams, stingrays, turtles, lobsters, whale, squid, frog, snail, fox (Swiper) and sea horses. There are a great many colors to discuss as well.]

For older toddlers and preschoolers you can `enhance' the story experience by moving your finger over the text, stopping at the `icons' with the intent of letting them fill in the blanks. My children get excited by this because it gives them the sense that they are beginning to feel apart of the `reading'. And if our experience is any indication, they learn that text flows from left to right and top to bottom.

Advanced preschoolers and kindergarteners on up can then begin to use the book for its stated purpose. They can begin to read it themselves. Most words are small: I, am, this, sad, will, the, and help. Although there are harder words for sure: Hooray, swipe, friend, something, clownfish, pirate, and pinch.

Four stars. A pretty good story (see previous reviewers fine summary) about the popular characters from the "Dora the Explorer" TV show. It can be used for babies to beginning readers. It engages children in the flow and process of reading, i.e. how it is done.

Good naptime book for preschoolers

A young boys' imagination is explored in this creative and delightful picture book for preschoolers. Little Will loves to play with his toy farm animals. When he puts on a farmer's hat, he becomes "Farmer Will" - and all the toy animals become life-size and animated. Will feeds them, cavorts on the grass, and plays hide-and-seek with his friends (a horse, a cow, a sheep and a pig).

The author of "Mama Zooms" and "Baby Angels" returns with a successful follow-up, inspired by her own sons' love of toy farm animals. The gentle illustrations are done in pastels, creating a playful yet relaxed structure. The line-drawn pencils are light, not harsh, giving an extra dimension to the tender setting. Preschoolers will enjoy sounding out the animal noises. An extra treat is the nap Will takes at the end of the story, making "Farmer Will" a perfect book to read to a young one before their midday slumber.

What a fun surprise you see when young Farmer Will put on his straw hat, take his toy horse Orsey, his cow Dow, his sheep Bah and his pig Wink-Wink out to stretch! And stretch they do, into full grown animals all ready to be perfect playmates any young child would love. Complete with animal noises to sound out loud, games Will plays including Hide-and-Seek to Ring-Around-the-Rosy, and ending in a nap, this is a great "tire-'em out and then quiet-'em down" pre-nap book for toddlers. All this is perfectly complimented with beautifully illustrated soft pastel and colored pencil drawings. Enjoyable.

I fell in love with this book, as did my son. It truely captures the wonderful imagination of a child and lets adults see into their world with them! The pictures are excellent. I highly reccomend it!

My Son read this book to me. This is an easy one for him but we are working on reading out loud. He needs to practice reading with the breaks in the right place. It is a cute story about Little bear and his father. It is an I Can Read book that I would recommend for K-2nd grade.

There are 4 different stories in this book. My favorite was Little Bear's Mermaid. I liked when Little Bear saw the mermaid when his mom and dad were sleeping. I also liked when Little Bear went fishing. Other kids will like this book because it has many stories in it.

The Little Bear saga are truly classic. From the artwork and storylines you think you are reading a Victorian era storybook. No your grandmother didn't read these stories to you. Soon enough we will be reading them to our grandchildren. Buy the hardback versions, your grandkids will love them.

I got this book from a friend and my little girl loves it. She was able to play with it as young as 2 months and now that she's 5 months old, she still loves it. The crinkling noise of the pages is what delights her the most. Does anyone out there know of any other books that make the crinkling sound? I would love to buy more.

Great toy, very cool book. Our 2.5 months old just loves to look at the Ladybug on the cover. She like to feal the book and to listen to the pages that make different sounds. Later we will be able to read it. There is no picture of the book on the site, but it's a very cool-looking book!!!

Great as a book and as a toy

My nine-month-old daughter adores this book. When she was a few months old, she liked to be read the story. Now that she's older and more active, it is an excellent toy. She likes to hug the book so it makes a crinkle sound. She enjoys playing with the dangling "feet" of the ladybug-shaped book. When she's older, I know she'll tote it around by the handle.

This is a fab book to buy for a baby of any age and would be an excellent gift. Whether baby reads the book or just chews on it, it's a great way to cultivate interest in books.

A Must-Have

My son loves this book. We started reading it to him when he was first born and it was the only book that he would watch while we read. Now, at nine months, it is still a favorite. He loves to crunch the crinkle pages, he loves to hold it up an watch the feet dangle, and he loves to chew on the ladybug's antenna.
