Cows can fly!Review Date: 2003-08-14
A boy draws a picture of a cow flying which his father scoffs at. The drawing takes to the wind when a gust catches it, bringing it to the dairy farms of America. The cows on the farm see this picture and decide to try to fly. Soon an entire herd of cows is taking to the sky! It's unfortunate that no one except the boy saw the flying cows, as everyone was too busy looking at the ground.
The story has a really great ending, good rhyming in each stanza, and a rich message that will uplift your heart. I highly recommend this book.
Life is Beautiful.Review Date: 2002-05-22
The book, though short and simple like most children's books, is accompanied by vibrant and lively illustrations that engage the imagination. The story revolves around a young boy who draws a picture of cows flying. Everybody knows that cows can't fly and even his father calls the drawing absurd. However, a gust of wind blows the picture to a pasture where it is discovered by a herd of cows. The cows see it and to their amazement find that they can fly. The boy sees them, but no one else does because they're too busy looking at the ground.
What a great message! Life's an adventure and if we believe everything people tell us and never try new things, we will never reach the heights we are capable. Anyone read Plato? It's the Parable of the Cave from the Republic, but told for kids. You know a book has to be good if it relates to ancient Greek metaphysics, yet is comprehendable by children.

ONCE UPON A DREAM: A DELIGHTFUL DISNEY TREAT FOR FANS OF ALL AGESReview Date: 2007-08-21
Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora/Briar Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty). This original, classic Princess Trio is celebrated in a delightful and entertaining Books and CD Box set.
The packaging may be pink (meaning the item is pidgeonholed as a product for "young girls") and the story presentation is brief (again pidgeonholing: as an item for "young readers") but this is actually a treat for fans of "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- fans of all ages. I don't have little girls/children. I purchased this simply because I love "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- and the price is extremely affordable.
I found the box the books and CD came in to be the perfect way to store and care for the books. The box easily fits on to a shelf of my entertainment center; so it should also fit easily on to any bookshelf. The books are 24 page paperbacks, but quite sturdy and nicely illustrated; although the cover illustration for the "SNOW WHITE" book makes Snow White and her Prince look like dorks!!
The three stories are all on one CD. The CD almost fell out of the box when I opened it. I put the CD in a jewel case, and downloaded it into my computer as well to make for easier use.
The stories are brief, (not quite the same as the larger and longer cherished Book and LP Record Series from my own childhood; but I'm still completely enchanted) so certain elements of the Disney plots (the mice making a dress for Cinderella, The Seven Dwarfs Dance Party with Snow White, and the good fairies making a birthday cake for Aurora and cleaning the cottage with magic wands) are eliminated. Still, I was amazed at how well the spirit and the essence of these Disney films is captured on a brief 36 minute CD. True fans will notice happily familiar musical underscoring over the narration of "CINDERELLA" and "SLEEPING BEAUTY." No songs from "SNOW WHITE" are included, but this story features a particularly vigorous alternate musical
underscoring, and is the best of the CD adaptations. However, "SLEEPING BEAUTY" is my favorite Disney fairy tale.
The narration is quite lively and the voice actors for the characters are superb; particularly for "SNOW WHITE." The voice actors are not the same as those in the actual films, but sound so similar that they will certainly evoke plesant memories.
Ilene Woods is heard singing "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" from the film Soundtrack of "CINDERELLA", and beautiful soprano Mary Costa sings "Once Upon A Dream" and "I Wonder" from the "SLEEPING BEAUTY" Soundtrack.

Good collection, lousy packagingReview Date: 2007-05-22
The collection itself is quite nice - Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in three separate books and one CD. Currently, only Cinderella is available for individual purchase. The box it came in was a piece of cardboard junk that was oversized and took up more space than it should have. We tossed it and are keeping the books in the same pile as the rest of her read-alongs and the CD in a jewel case of its own.
While it is nice to cut down on the number of discs to keep track of, the 3-in-1 set up is a little hard, because unless I program my daughter's CD player to just play one story, it will play all three, one right after another. Usually, this isn't a big deal - it gives me about 36 minutes of uninterrupted peace - but if we even suggest that she only listen to one of the three, she has an absolute fit. To her, the three stories HAVE to be listened to consecutively.
So, we like the collection, the packaging was pathetic, and the single-disc can create a few problems, but overall it was a very good buy. I would like to see the individual stories offered separately, though, so we could have some choices in what we decide to purchase.

A Jolly Good Time!Review Date: 2001-05-16
The book is a Dorling Kindersley publication, so it's chock-full of visual information and provides outstanding explanations of medieval culture, terms, and expressions. The subject matter ties in with several topics, including folk tales, British culture, adventure, and history. The tape and book should encourage lively classroom discussions.
I can visualize playing this audio book during classroom art time or as a reward. It could also be the inspiration for a classroom play. And, of course, it's a wonderful purchase for children or grandchildren for home enjoyment. Best of all, the price is quite reasonable and delivery couldn't be easier.

Wonderful Introduction for Children to this ClassicReview Date: 2000-11-30
Classic story, well told.Review Date: 2001-06-11
Mr. Gruffudd just has a way with British accents. Robin's band of men apparently come from all over the UK - Cornwall, Irish, King's English accents (plus more that I couldn't easily identify) were used. And of course, Mr. Gruffudd's natural Welsh accent told the story.
The book was great. Lots of pictures, lot of sidebars of information. From obsolete jargon to modern pictures of people in costume, these pages in the book help to explain a lot.
The story, of course, is a classic. I would caution parents of sensitive children to consider editing the last chapter or so. Instead of ending the story with the "happily ever after" once Robin and Marian are married, this book follows Robin until his death at the hand of his cousin, who betrays him.
All in all, it was highly enjoyable. A definite recommend!

Another Great Dora BookReview Date: 2006-11-30
Certain words have little "pictographs" with the word that it's for directly underneath it in smaller print. I suppose this is to help the child learn to read these certain words. Since my daughters are still pretty young (the oldest is now just learning the sounds different letters make; she already can recognize all the letters), we haven't really tried to use these little pictures in that way. Although, we've read this story so many times to them that they "read along" by reciting from memory certain parts of the story. All Dora the Explorer books are great fun for the kids because it involves them in the story much like the TV show does.
I highly recommend it.

Another Good Dora Adventure - a review of "Dora in the Deep Sea"Review Date: 2005-12-14
In that regards, Amazon suggests this book for the 4 to 8 age range, but I think it is much more versatile than that. For example, for babies you can read the story and talk about what animals are in the picture and what color they are. [There are seagulls, a variety of silly fish, octopuses, sea anemones, eels, crab, starfish, clams, stingrays, turtles, lobsters, whale, squid, frog, snail, fox (Swiper) and sea horses. There are a great many colors to discuss as well.]
For older toddlers and preschoolers you can `enhance' the story experience by moving your finger over the text, stopping at the `icons' with the intent of letting them fill in the blanks. My children get excited by this because it gives them the sense that they are beginning to feel apart of the `reading'. And if our experience is any indication, they learn that text flows from left to right and top to bottom.
Advanced preschoolers and kindergarteners on up can then begin to use the book for its stated purpose. They can begin to read it themselves. Most words are small: I, am, this, sad, will, the, and help. Although there are harder words for sure: Hooray, swipe, friend, something, clownfish, pirate, and pinch.
Four stars. A pretty good story (see previous reviewers fine summary) about the popular characters from the "Dora the Explorer" TV show. It can be used for babies to beginning readers. It engages children in the flow and process of reading, i.e. how it is done.

Good naptime book for preschoolersReview Date: 2001-11-02
The author of "Mama Zooms" and "Baby Angels" returns with a successful follow-up, inspired by her own sons' love of toy farm animals. The gentle illustrations are done in pastels, creating a playful yet relaxed structure. The line-drawn pencils are light, not harsh, giving an extra dimension to the tender setting. Preschoolers will enjoy sounding out the animal noises. An extra treat is the nap Will takes at the end of the story, making "Farmer Will" a perfect book to read to a young one before their midday slumber.
