I could relate to hating gym and being ridiculed but it was sooo funny when mal thought the hobarts were angels and learned the hard way that they were brats and her own brothers were the real angels. You have to read it to know what I mean, it's just sooo funny!!!

I could completely relate back in the day

I hated gym too so much, I was always clumsy myself and volleyball was a nightmare. I was always getting hit in the face just like mallory and it broke my glasses one time. I developed a phobia for big balls flying in my face ever since and I would be depressed after class because I wanted to impress them and do well, but it just wasn't my thing. And mallory's character spoke about myself.

I'm glad Martin brought this issue out in the open!

I wish I had read this book when I was in jr high, because I can really identify with Mallory and what she goes through. I dropped out of P.E. in 8th grade because I couldn't take it anymore what was happening to me in our co-ed P.E. class. I wasn't the athletic type and was a klutz, and was harassed by the guys who would call me fat, etc. and it was a totally humiliating experience for me. I especially hated soccer, I just couldn't get it, and the guys took total advantage of this by slamming the ball into me ow!! They thought it was the funniest thing in the world to see me in pain. Like in Mal's situation, the school authorities couldn't understand why I'd refuse to go to P.E. Like Mal, I too was punished due to my failure to participate. By highschool I had a medical waiver so I didn't have to do P.E. at all. I was free! I don't think kids should have to suffer through P.E.; It is a dumb rule to have it as a requirement. What does it matter; it's not doing anything for your education...

Cool!

Mallory has never been a sports person. In fact, you could say gym is her least favorite subject. Nut now Mal's worst subject has turned into an absolute nightmare. Gym classs has gone co-ed.

Lisa has a homework assignment. She needs to measure something. Why not Penny? She uses standard units of measurement, such as inches and centimeters, along with non-standard units of measurement, such as dog biscuits and herself, to measure her dog Penny, and other dogs too. She conducts weight comparisons of dogs with the use of a teeter-totter, and then she takes Penny home to conduct volume measurements with food and water. The illustrations are done in a simple and direct way to help children understand the concept of units of measurement. This is an outstanding book.

I loved this book. The book was so fun. Kids love this book because it has to do with dogs. It was very easy to read and to understand all of the measurements. Kids get into the book and want to go measure their own dog or cat at home. I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who has to teach measuring to their kids or their class.

Perfect for teaching measuring!

I used this book with my kindergarteners and they adored it! They already knew Penny from the book about maps so they were excited to listen to a Penny book in math. We used it as our starting point to get an overview on measurement and then went back to specific sections of the book to learn about each type of measurement. When Lisa used herself as a measuring tool, the students used their bodies as measuring tools. When Lisa used dog biscuits to measure Penny, we measured things in the room with dog biscuits. There are so many ways to do the things that Lisa does in the classroom and bring this book, and measuring, alive!

I used to be a Teacher Aide for a daycare for kids ages 2-4. Every day before naptime the kids would beg me to read this book to them. And not just once but twice! They loved when the baby bear went down to see the dragon. And at the end of the story they would all shout the last line "milk and cookies"!! Since then I have had a baby of my own and would like to get a copy of this book that sure will be a favorite with my daughtor.

in Frank Asch's _Milk and Cookies_ the author introduces the common childhood fears of monsters, and presents a story which helps children overcome that fear.

Mama, Papa, and baby bear are visiting at Grandma and Grampa's house. They spend the night. Baby bear looks through the cellar door to see Grampa feeding "a dragon" in the cellar, which is actually a wood stove. Later baby bear has a dream of a dragon coming upstairs, which eats all his milk and cookies. Crying baby bear is then taken downstairs by his father to see "the dragon." After that, baby bear is no longer scared; he and his grandparents and parents all eat milk and cookies.

My 3-year old son loves this book. He sympathizes with baby bear, and he loves the way the story is resolved, of course. I'd recommend this, as well as Frank Asch's book _Goodbye, House_ as excellent books for children aged 3.

This is another winner from the "Mr. Putter and Tabby" series. Old Mr. Putter and his old cat like to sit and watch the snow, but they must act soon if they want to think of something to give their nice neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, for Christmas. Knowing her unlikely fondness for fruitcake, the intrepid pair decide to bake her one that wouldn't "break her toe if she dropped it." After much ado, they finally succeed in their effort, and fall asleep on Christmas morning in Mrs. Teaberry's house, having just delivered the cake. In the end, Mr. Putter goes home with "a very nice toaster that sang 'America the Beautiful' when the bread popped up." This gentle, subtle humor runs throughout the book and goes well with the colorful, expressive illustrations. Mr. Putter's persistence in trying to bake a cake is admirable. Furthermore, like many good Christmas books, this one shows the importance of giving. A fine book for kids who are just beginning to read.

A Wonderful Christmas Story - Mr. Putter and Tabby Style!

Review Date: 2002-07-29
The Mr. Putter and Tabby series are the sort of books that I would have loved to have when I was a beginning reader. I know that I would have read them over and over again to no end, even once they began to fall apart from constant use. That's why I am so glad that Mr. Putter and Tabby are around now while my youngest brother is learning to read. The non-repetitious (words are repeated, but not enough to become explicit), non-rhyming storytelling contained within the books makes them a pleasure to read continually, unlike many other easy-reader books. And in my opinion, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books are a step in front of Ms. Rylant's Henry and Mudge collection, due to the fact that, in their own way, they create an appreciation for the elderly as the reader comes to love Mr. Putter, the aging main character whose only companion is his cat, Tabby.

In Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake the Cake, Christmas is soon approaching, and Mr. Putter must decide what to give Mrs. Teaberry, his fruit-cake-loving next-door neighbor. Mr. Putter does not understand how anyone could enjoy a fruit cake, and so he sets out to make Mrs. Teaberry a "light and airy" cake for Christmas, one that "could not break her toe if she dropped it." Young readers will follow along with Mr. Putter and his good cat Tabby as they try to make Mrs. Teaberry's cake, from start to finish. Mishap prevails, leaving you to wonder if they will ever get through in time. It all adds up to a cheery Christmas story about giving and the saying, "It's the thought that counts!"

Mr. Howard's cartoon-style illustrations greatly enhance this wonderful story, which is written in such a format to be used as either a 3-chapter book for the beginning reader, or a bedtime story that is longer in length. Either way, the Mr. Putter and Tabby books would be a great find for emerging readers' shelves. Like having a kindly old grandpa next door, they only make life richer!

A nice change-of-pace Christmas story

A delightful Christmas story that emphasizes giving of oneself and pokes a little fun at commercialism. Mr. Putter is as "light and airy" (or light and HAIRY as my five-year-old points out in chapter 4) as ever. Mr. Putter teaches us that we are never too old to learn!

I recently purchased this book for my children, ages 1, 3 and 5 and they really enjoy it. It has cute pictures and a great lesson about determination, a dream and trying your best!

This is an excellent children's book. I totally disagree with Hook's assessment that this is uninspired. It has inspired our family. Anytime something is difficult my 5 year old states "anything is possible with a little practice and determination".

This cow makes her dream possible even in the face of others laughing at her. A good lesson in "not having to go along with the crowd and peer pressure".

My Two Year Old Can't Get Enough of This Book

Review Date: 2000-08-09
Several times a day my two year old will place himself squarely in front of my wife or myself and simply demand "Mrs. Mooley!"

That's about the best endorsement I can give for a children's book.

This tale is of a cow who is inspired by a misplaced book of nursery rhymes to accomplish one -- the cow jumping over the moon.

All of the other animals laugh at Mrs. Mooley as she practices for her attempt. Their laughter turns to wide eyed adoration as she clears the moon on her final attempt, just as dawn is breaking over the barnyard.

As Mrs. Mooley states: "all it takes is a little practice and determination."

I love this set

We've used the Bob books, Diego phonics, Curious George phonics and by far this is the best "set" of books for my 4 year old boy. Each book focuses on a different phrase, so the repetition of certain words builds confidence.

The stickers have been a great reward system, for us. Generally I am selective about when using rewards - I'd prefer my son learn to read simply for the enjoyment of reading, and not for the sticker - but I have to say that stickers work! I volunteer for 1st & 2nd graders who are "behind" their classmates (something I really don't agree with in our public schools) and stickers motivate them to read, even at that age. It also becomes a quick way for them to see how many books they've read.

I commend the teacher who started this set, and hope more educators are able to put their real-life expertise out for parents like me!

We tried the BOB books in addition to tons of other early reading books and we were always disappointed! They were too hard or easy and not progressive. The stories were boring.

We started this series of Books while my daughter was in Kindergarten. She loved them!!! Earning a sticker every time she correctly read a story was a HUGE incentive because after 3 stickers she moved on to the next story! The repetition was incredibly helpful with word recognition and the comprehension questions are a great tool that we now do with every story we read! We read this series all summer long and now my daughter is in an advanced reading group in first grade! I recommend them to anyone who has a child with a basic sight word list.

My daughter who turned 3 in April loves this book; she received it as a gift last Christmas. It's 10 little books that pull out of clear plastic sleeves. She likes to pretend to read, and the way these stories are written and illustrated, it is very easy for her to do so. I just bought a couple more in the series; I hope they're as good.

I recommend this book to anyone with a child ready to read. It is a step by step phonics based system. Other books I've looked at have black and white pictures or boring stories. The colorful pictures add to the story and I often hear my son laughing while he reads even the simplest books. I have both sets that are in Level One, and both sets for Level two. I'm sure I will be purchasing Level Three.

Nice pictures, easy text, graduated vocabulary, and high interest topics. I only wish they had MORE on the independent level than they do.

...this is their favorite Christmas story.

As a housewarming gift, I picked up a pair of Christmas books for my friends' children last year. This year, their mother again thanked me for "The Night Before the Night Before Christmas." It had become her kindergartener's and pre-schooler's favorite. In fact, it was the only story the pre-schooler wanted to hear.

For fun, I ordered myself a copy. It is now my favorite too. Following the cadences of "The Night Before Christmas," readers are invited along to witness a typical, loving family's Christmas challenges. Page after page of endearing illustrations will enchant readers of all ages. Not even the most dedicated Grinch can resist.

Don't wait another year to pick up this great story.

This twist on Clement C. Moore's Christmas poem is one that parents can really identify with! It's about all the things that can and will go wrong during Christmas preparations, like burnt cookies. Yet the spirit of the holiday wins out. My daughter really likes this book and I think it is a pleasure to read to her. I don't agree with the editorial review that it, "...scans awkwardly and does not easily lend itself to sharing aloud." I love the illustrator's style too. It's a very cute and clever book that is worth having in your Christmas library.

I have bought several books on cooking with venison. I thought the pictures were beautiful. However, once I started cooking and pulled one of the books out, I quickly realized I only had a few of the ingredients needed. Those books went back on the shelf without another glance. Quick and Easy soon became my middle name once I had a family, but I didn't want to rule out taste either. Oh Deer is perfect! The recipes are easy, quick to prepare, and oh so tasty. Most of the recipes have the same key ingredients that compliment your venison, so once you stock up on those few things, your good to go. This book never goes on a shelf. It is left out on my counter all the time. Since my husband's family are all hunters, I gave each wife a copy for Christmas.

I really enjoyed the first 8 chapters of the book. You see, I met Cheri at my 20 yr class reunion in the summer of 2000. The avid hunter she married was my classmate. That is when I found out about the book. My husband and now 13 yr old son are also hunters and I very much needed some variety for my venison menus. We have three deer in the freezer this very minute and one hanging in the shed to be de-boned tomorrow. I know many of the places and people she mentions in the book and that makes it even more interesting for me. But the best part, and the reason I bought the book is the wonderful recipes... all made with ingredients that I either have on hand already or can easily find in my local grocery store in a town of 700 people. I learned a few things in the first few chapters, also. I just now ordered another one to give to my dad for Christmas. He loves "cooking up" new ways to use his venison. I'm sure my brother will be borrowing it also. Thank you, Cheri, for a great help in the hunters' wive's kitchen.

My husband and I have been together 4 years, and it was not until this year's hunting trip that he had success (and I had panic!) He shot two deer and I had no clue what to do with the meat. I had previously tried masking the flavor with excessive salt, but beyond that I was clueless. I ordered several books, and this one has made me the venison goddess! My husband and family have thoroughly loved all of my creations (I've tried 8 recipes now). The author is so down to earth and lets you know which recipes are "potluck worthy" and which are most kid friendly as well. The ingredients are normal stuff. She also taught me some things about nutrition, field dressing, and psychology! Of all the books I ordered, this is really the only one I keep going back to. It gets my two thumbs up, and I am a pretty picky reviewer. Happy cooking!

Thank You.

The illustrations in this book are wonderful. They are actual photo type images of the Earth & moon with cartoon images imposed over them. The text is short, simple & perfect for early readers. It just catches their little imaginations.
This book also encourages imaginative play related to space. We have looked for moon rocks & taken many pretend space flights since buying this book. I can't say enough good things about this book.

This is an awesome picture book to be read to children age 1 to 5. Children who can read also love reading it to their younger siblings. It's beautiful with lots of pictures and educational to learn about the moon and astronauts. The kids love this book and read it over and over. There are other great picture books on www.suesbooks.info. I have collected loads of these books. Can't get enough of them.

My son loves to read (and eat...) this book. He's only 5 months old but already I can see that he is fasinated by the illustrations. Great gift book.

This is one of those books that the more you look at the pictures, the more you see. The illustrations are both beautiful and whimsical. I also really like how many of the images are repeated throughout the book. The book is sturdy and pages are easy to turn. I've given this and its companion by Alison Jay, "ABC: A Child's First Alphabet Book," to many new parents with rave reviews!

My favorite children's book!

This is an amazing book! My son is 14-months old and this has been his favorite book for a few months. He loves looking at all the pictures and has learned many of his first words from this book. He also loves searching for the little pictures in the background of each page. This is also my favorite children's book that we have. We have had it for a year and I am still finding new ways in which all the pictures are interconnected with each reading. I never tire of reading it to my son and we read it a lot! Because it is a picture book with a single word description on each page it leaves the reader freedom to elaborate and make up stories about the people and objects. It is an excellent book and I plan to give it at every baby shower and birthday party I attend.

Deserves to be an award winner

What an amazing book! Seemingly a simple book at first, with each page "Picture This" increases in complexity and fascination. Each picture refers back (or forward) to other illustrations in the book in clever, intelligent ways. This book is a joy to read through. My son and I can't put it down when we reach the end; we immediately bounce back to the beginning to recommence our journey. I plan on giving this to every child (and perhaps an adult or two) I know.

Always something new to see

This is a great book for a variety of ages of children. You can start by reading the little ones this book because there is only one word or label per page, such as "hill" or "snowman". So the ones who are impatient can keep flipping those pages fast as you read! When they get older and learn to read it's a great book to start with, because they can match the word with the picture in the book. And at any age it is fun to examine the gorgeous illustrations. Not only do many of the objects reappear from one page to another, but if you are paying close attention you can watch the progression of the seasons. I loved this book so much I bought it as a gift for a friend, and now we are both hooked on all books with Alison Jay illustrations!
