excellent way to talk about getting sick and going to hospital

This is a good book to talk about getting sick, seeing a doctor, taking x-ray and going to the hospital. Not a lot of words, but the pictures say it all. It describes how Franklin noticed a crack on his shell, then went to see the doctor and found out he needed a surgery. Then it shows him telling his friends about his upcoming surgery, then going to the hospital for admission, then to his private room, then surgery, recover..

The most amazing part is how much detail it gets into. For example, Franklin has to go to the x-ray room by himself (he was allowed to take his stuff animal), with his parents waiting outside. Also before he went into surgery room, he had to say goodbye to his parents, etc.

Nice for 3 year olds too

My son was going in for same day surgery, and this was a nice way to reiterate what we had already seen on our tour. The end part where the turtle is LEFT by his parents overnight probably can be omitted, but so can so many other things in books these days. Overall, a nice and non offending book, even for a family who doesn't normally use characters such as these in their normal book libary.

Excellent book!

Though i am now growing older I can still remember the books that captivated me as a child. Now that my children have begun to discover reading I found that Grasshopper Pie is an excellent addition to their book collection and a creative way to nurture and develop their reading skills. The illustrations are also great and help my kids learn and comprehend. I hope both the author and illustrator of this book continue to publish books so that my children and I can enjoy themin the future.
Sincerely,

This book is a wonderful collection of poems for children. I love the illustrations by Adrian Sinnott because they match the writing perfectly. They are silly, fun, and creative. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Shel Silverstien.

The poetry in Grasshopper Pie is wonderful for youngsters just learning how to read. The vivid illustrations drawn by Adrian Sinnott make the whole learning-to-read experience a much more enjoyable and fun one. It was so clever to have a grasshopper hidden on every page!! I am first grade teacher in Boston, and the kids in my class loved reading the book and looking at the pictures. Sinnott really inspired them to get into art and draw on their own.

A Fun, Whimsical Book

Grasshopper Pie and Other Poems is a collection of whimsical stories by David Steinberg. Brought to life by cartoonist Adrian Sinnott, the tales and illustrations will captivate children and parents alike. My two daughters loved the Grasshopper chronicles-- from the title story to a tale about an upside-down boy and an "Alien in My Soup." My oldest daughter, age 7, found the cover illustration fun to study, with grasshoppers playfully swimming in the kitchen sink, lounging in the silverware drawer, munching on a blueberry pie, etc. Anyone who has children knows that children love looking at the details of any given drawing and spotting the various activities depicted by the artist (there's a "Where's Waldo?" quality to the cover). As my oldest daughter said, "The drawings are cool and the stories are funny." Thankfully, Grasshopper Pie does not have any politically correct adult moralizing, and instead emphasizes children's imaginations. I recommend Grasshopper Pie for children ages 5 to 8, and for adults who wish to revisit the way they once thought when they were young.

Good stuff, basic to intermediate level healing techniques. The author does a great job of explaining (and proving) somewhat complex ideas related to hands-on vibrational healing. I've been involved with this field of study for a few years and I still learned a few things.

I found the book very interesting and informative. I had very little
exposure to this type of practice before this book and now have a much
better understanding of the intricacies involved in Energy Therapy. I
rate this book a 5 and recommend it be acquired by any student of the
occult. If you are a student of alternate therapies and holistic healing
you will benefit by what this work has to offer. It will make an excellent addition to the occult library.

Since then, I've read TONS. Shakespeare, Hemmingway, Melville, Dickens, and Hawthorne. I've read romance novels, sci-fi novels, political thrillers, John Grisham books, espionage novels, and guides on how to score high on the SAT. I've read some of the best books ever written by some of the smartest people in their field.

And to this day, "How Many Trucks Can a Tow Truck Tow?" is still one of my top 3 favorite books.

Buy it for your kids and read it to them as many times as they want. It's catchy, funny, and cute. Five Stars.

Lowering the Culture

Give me a break. The notion that kids need a book on farting is juvenality in the extreme. "It's a normal bodily function" said one reviewer. So is throwing up, and taking a dump. Are they next? Kids are fascinated by boogers, too. If it's a natural bodily function, then of course children should be taught to fart when and where they want to. In McKy's world, couples would fart as they took their vows of marriage. The president would fart as he took the oath of office. I would walk over and fart in your face as you slept. It's only natural.

This is what happens when adults refuse to grow up. And increasingly, this is what Harvard produces.

Everyone Farts @ Once?

Review Date: 2005-03-03
A Parent of a Second Grader apparently asked this Harvard Expert on Flatulence to answer the Second Grader's Query: "What would happen if everyone in the world farted at once?" [This query is quite popular in the 21st Century, replacing the Theodicy polemical of: "Can an All-Powerful Divinity create a stone so huge that the Divinity would not be able to lift it?"
And so Katie McKy was inspired to write this "Farting for Dummies" tome, so that any Second Grader would be able to instruct the ignorant pater familas as to how to fuel the engine of people and animals - beans, raisins, cheese, potato chips, gum, eggs, soda, and swallowing too much air. [This reviewer has found through extensive one-on-one research, coupled with the witness testimony of his wife, that when he consumes lettuce, his own noxious fumes are able to penetrate several layers of comforters, thus creating his own home-made "Disparate Housewife!"]
And so another follower of "Zen and the Art of Farting" and Ben Franklyn's Doctoral Dissertation, has joined up with "Walter, the Farting Dog" to add to the growing literature (...)
And just as Dan Brown assured us that everything in "The Leonardo Code" was church and art historically valid, so too Ms. McKy assures us that "It All Began with a Bean" "is the true story of what happened when everything and everyone farted at once."
And just as the Illustrated Edition of "The Leonardo Code" [and the special issue of US News & World Report] demonstrated, McKy has the Tracey Hill illustrations to prove her dogmatic assertion. Like "Walter" the depictions of gaseous emissions on the cover demonstrate that flatulence is both yellow and uplifting.
And thus, "It Stared with a Bean" joins the "The Semen Book" by Vivien Marx, as a Classic Comic to whet the appetite of curious adults when questioned by precocious Second Graders, and as bed-time reading for youngish grandchildren whilst the parents: Party, Party, Party.
A must reference, to be placed beside "Ann of Green Gables," which will gather fond memories for generations to come. De gustibus est non disputandum, or something like that.

I'm a mom and a teacher and I have read many children's books as I've raised my children. "It All Began With a Bean" is one of the most creative and whimsical books that I have ever read. The illustrations are delightful and the story is great fun. The inspiration for the story, which I read in a newspaper, was a second grader's question: "What would happen if everyone in the world farted at once?" This is a typical question for young children and Katie McKy answers it with great good humor. I look forward to more books by Ms. McKy.

In the beginning I pretty much guessed who it was. The ending was sort of confusing. You really have to pay attention to the ending, or you'll get lost. I also felt, that the author stuck in some things, that have no explanations, just to throw you off. Things that didn't make sense. But all in all, I thought it was pretty good. I couldn't put it down.

The Lifeguard by Richie Tankersley Cusick is a great suspenseful thriller. This marvelous novel pulls you in like a fish on a hook.
Kelsey, a young 15-year-old girl, goes with her mother to Beverly Island to visit her mother's fiancée Eric. When they show up at the island, Eric immediately tells Kelsey and her Mom that his daughter, Beth, has been murdered. After Kelsey and her Mom settle in, Kelsey starts getting notes from Beth who is supposed to be dead. Soon, she always feels like someone is watching her. Then, someone starts to follow her but she can't quite guess whom. Does someone know that Beth is trying to communicate with Kelsey? Is Beth really dead? You'll just have to read this powerful must read book in order to find out.
The Lifeguard is an awesome book for 7th graders and up. This is a great fiction novel. So great, that I even finished it in 5 days. Richie Tankersley Cusick also wrote The Mall, and Teacher's Pet.

A Nice, Fast-Paced Book!...

Richie Tankersley Cusick delivers another great thriller here with "The Lifeguard." The storyline revolves around a girl named Kelsey. Her and her mother go to Beverly Island to visit her new father-figure. When they arrive, they are bombarded with news of his daughter's disappearance. Things also take a turn for the worse when Kelsey discovers a note under her pillow, written by the missing girl! On top of all this, Kelsey finds out about the recent mysterious drownings on the island, and comes face to face with a creepy fisherman. All of this makes for a terrifying visit she'll never forget!

"The Lifeguard" was a good book. Not the very best I've read from Cusick, but close. Along with most thrillers, it gets you hooked immediately, and never lets go. I also took a liking to the ending. Not entirely surprising, but very dark and ominous. Also, it was a relatively long climax, unlike most stories, which was good. Overall, it is completely worth your time.

Oh, I love this book. OK. Here's the summary.

***Kelsey and her mom went to stay at an island with Kelsey's mom's boyfriend. When they get there, Eric was Kelsey's mom' boyfriend, told them that his daughter Beth was missing. The police can't find any clue about the disappearing. But that's not all weird. There are more disappearing before Kelsey even arrived. Some girls were missing mostly from their dates. Kelsey met Justin and his brother Neale. Both are also Eric's son. Justin is so sweet and incredible nice to Kelsey from the start. He seem to like her a lot. But on the other hand, Neale is so strange and he's mean to her. He dislike her and wouldn't talk at all to her or even to welcome her staying on the island, unlike what Justin like. Then there's Skip, a very handsome guy that Kelsey had attracted on the first place. Donna, who's really nice to Kelsey and befriend with her.
Kelsey found a note from Beth saying the she was in trouble. Kelsey put the note away and when she get back to it, it was gone. Then strange thing happen to her.***

This book is so good. But at the ending is pretty sad. When the culprit was being revealed. But I really do recommend this book along with "The Drifter", another one of my favorite; "April's Fool", "Help Wanted", "Vampire", "Someone at the door" and "Silent stalker". Enjoy!!!

Wow! Cynthia Rylant makes you love old Mr. Putter with words that are so easy a beginning reader can read the book, and yet incredibly profound with such simplicity.

"All day long as Mr. Putter clipped his roses and fed his tulips and watered his trees, Mr. Putter wished for some company."

Mr. Putter finds a very old, lonely cat at an animal shelter and now they both have companionship and their lives are no longer lonely.

This is the first book in a wonderful series about an older man who finds companionship with a pet. My daughter is now 7 and we began reading these when she was 4 or 5. Even though she reads at a level well beyond this, she still asks me to read these books to her. They are sweet and charming and I think help children to see older people in a very sympathetic way. They are all terrific books and we own the entire series. I look forward to enjoying them all over again when my three year old is ready.

This is a story about a fundamental human need, that of companionship. Mr. Putter is an old man who lives alone, has muffins in the morning and tea in the afternoon. He works in his yard during the day, but there is no one to do it with. Therefore, Mr. Putter decides to get a cat.
He goes to a store, but all they have is kittens, which have too much energy for him. The clerk suggests that he go to a shelter, which he does. While there, he finds an old yellow cat whose bones creak; hair is thinning and appears to be a little deaf. All characteristics shared by Mr. Putter.
Once he gets the cat home, he names him Tabby. They hit it off immediately, becoming the best of friends and Mr. Putter is once again enjoying life. It is a charming book with a powerful and correct social message about how the elderly live their lives.

I am currently raising my third daughter through the beginning reader phase. It is very hard to find books that are engaging enough for a bright child during this stage of developement. I find this series has more in the way of a plot than Rylant's more popular "Henry and Mudge" series. My 2 older daughters who are now 12 and 14 begged me to by as many Mr. Putter and Tabby books as I can for their 6 year old "baby sister". We are a household of avid readers, and this is our favorite beginning reader series.

My mom and I absoutly love this book! It's so cute how he's lonely and he wished for some company. So he goes out to the pound and finds the perfect cat. With similar qualties as him. From then on they do every thing together. They drink tea, eat muffins, sing opera, tell stories, garden, took long walks, take naps, and grow old together. Tabby knew just what Mr.Putter was going to do next. Mr.Putter knew exactly where Tabby was going to sleep next. It's just such a sweet story about the love Mr.Putter has for this cat and the love the cat has for him.

She catches the subtlety of Poppleton's disdain turned friendship for his neighbor, Cherry Sue, with great writing. The terrific illustrations by Mark Teague add a lot of depth to the story.

Rylant's books were a breath of fresh air to me while teaching my children to read.

We love Poppleton!

After being utterly charmed by the Mr. Putter and Tabby series, we found the Poppleton books by the same author and now cannot get enough! Both my six year old and my three year old sons adore these books. The illustrations are beautiful and make the animal characters real and expressive. And the stories are wonderful and appealing to children. Very warmhearted. A delight to read aloud and fun for beginning readers too.

Poppleton takes library day very seriously

I love Poppleton! When he slathered chapstick on his snout during the dry parts (of his book), I laughed for hours. The illustrations really express the writer's thought and deliver the punchlines beautifully. Poppleton, unlike so many other cheesy kid's books, is one book I don't mind reading over and over and over. I laugh like an idiot every time!

With so many books that insult the intelligence of little kids, it was refreshing to see one that is funny and clever and well-illustrated all at the same time!

Poppleton is great fun for kids and their parents. We can't wait for more Poppleton books to read. These are funny stories in the tradition of George and Martha by James Marshall.

great value teaching for kids, and funny for parents too

My daughter loves these books, and always asks me to find more. They combine a quirky personality with good solid values, giving food for discussion as well as a chance to laugh together. The language is also quite simple and so my daughter is attempting to read it herslef.

Warmly recommended.
