The elegant roots of commercial art
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-18
This work provides the largest collection of copyright-free early advertising art ever compiled, containing the best commercial art from the time of Benjamin Franklin up to the 1890s with contributions by Nast, Bewick and many other early illustrators and artists.

Collected from both European and American sources, the artworks comprise scores of illustrations all systematically arranged and classified for easy reference. Pictorial material is grouped together according to subject and use. A lot of this material is unique and appears only here or scattered as individual cuts in rare out-of-print books. Most have never been reproduced in any other collection.

This pictorial volume contains more than 2000 illustrations, including animals, agricultural cuts, vintage cars, birds, buildings, articles of clothing, allegorical figures, Thanksgiving motifs, food and drink, hands, horse-drawn vehicles, fire engines, patriotic motifs, ships, symbols, musical instruments, sports and games, trade cuts, pictorial trade advertisements, trains plus Christmas and New Year themes.

Handbook Of Early Advertising Art contains 237 full-page plates plus an appendix with notes on the plates. Everything in this volume is entirely free of copyright and may be reproduced without permission or fee. It is ideal for advertising agencies whilst all commercial artists will find it to be a valuable picture source book. Printers and designers will also find it useful. The book concludes with a bibliography and detailed index.

This book is one of only a few good books on advertising that stands the test of time. Filled with practical tips, useful charts and good insights, it is still an excellent resource even though it is now quite a few years old.

Channel One (and its ads in the classroom) analyzed well.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-06
Fox's book is a field researcher's report about the effects of Channel One on kids. Using a tape recorder to document the words, the author collects convincing anecdotal evidence, then offers a good analysis of it. Kids today may well know the glittering surfaces and superficialities of ads -- the slogans and the celebrities -- but this book reminds us that kids are still kids: very naive, uncritical, and innocent about the ways of the world of persuasion. Fox elicits and records the comments of children as they talk about the ads they've seen on Channel One as part of this nationwide captive audience of over 8 million kids in classrooms, in a valuable locale and "day-part." Of special interest is the author's analysis of the kids' deep involvement in these ads, and of the many ways they incorporate and "replay" these ad messages. This book should be required reading -- and reflection --for every teacher, administrator, and school board member who is responsible for allowing Channel One into their classrooms.

Barz Does It Again!

I have been doing part-time radio voice over work for years and I remember hearing Alan Barzman voicing national radio commercials way back in the 70's. I admired his work and so when I came across this book, I had to buy it. His sometimes tongue-in-cheek writing was very entertaining and he gives you a behind the scenes look at the history of radio and the way radio commercials are now. I especially liked Chapter 16, which gives you all you need to know if you're considering a career in voicing radio ads. I especially remember the days when Barzman teamed up with Bert Berdis (formerly of the famous radio team, Dick & Bert) and formed their own 'radio ranch.' If you're an afficianato of radio, you'll enjoy going down memory lane with this book.

Author Joachim Büschken adeptly presents a different form of pricing strategy based on making it more expensive for customers to switch from your product to a new one, even if your product fails them. This concept, called "customer lock-in," entails charging such high "switching costs" for changing vendors that customers are stuck. It means that consumers who buy deficient software or earn frequent flier miles on a chronically tardy airline are reluctant to change because switching is a big nuisance or too expensive. While your business may not embrace this idea, some hardware (Hewlett-Packard) and software (Microsoft) companies use it to great advantage. To his credit, Büschken has a short section on the ethics of lock-in. He concludes that it is ethically okay given disclosure, though you may want to have a deeper discussion. While the writing can be repetitive and dry, we find that this is a rare book on a sensitive topic. We recommend it to marketers and product strategists who want to learn more about this little-known, potentially controversial pricing practice. It is also a pretty good eye-opener for consumers; customer lock-in takes 'caveat emptor' to new heights (or depths).

When I picked this book up on Amazon recently, I kept wondering how this subject would be viewed and explained to the layman who knows very little about advertising and images of ADS over the years. Luckily I do, but I tried reading it as a novice and this publication still haunts me. It's a superbly written text with what most guys need, images to look at that bring many points home. It's written by an expert in the field but one with the knowledge and respect for his less sophisticated readers like myself to be able to follow his words. It's very easily understood and very well paced so that the reader can either take his or her time or read it over a weekend, like I did.

I read it once but intend to read it again, as I find this material and the writer very fascinating and interesting. The author has a magnificent style about his writing and is very well read in this field. This is a must read for anyone who is fascinated by the subject of homosexuality and the subject of humanity's perseptions of it.

Thanks, Bruce Joffe. Wonderful read!

A story which captures the imagination
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-28
I first read this story several years ago and over time, it has remained vividly in my memory. I can recall scenes and dialogues and picture the images painted by Ms. Williams' words in my mind. Katie's story draws you in before you realize it and you are swept into the mountain country of Arizona in the Old West, struggling along side an orphaned family. Ms. Williams brings the era and the people alive, touching fiction with history. Almost all the characters, especially Katie and Bill, offer something of interest to the reader - you get the sense that each has his or her own story. "Home Mountain" is a sweet story (a bit unrealistic), a historical romance without a doubt, but something about it lingers. It is a tale of the strength of spirit, of family and of love and if you enjoy historical stories, it is worth a read.
