I have fine-tuned my Internet and radio marketing and probably saved THOUSANDS of dollars thanks to the information in this book. I just hope my competition doesn't get their hands on this anytime soon. THANK YOU!!!

The leading thinker
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-30
There are very few books in the field of communications that bridge the gap between marketing theory and the realities of creative development. This is one of the few, and it is John Philip Jones' best book yet.

The author has the advantage of having worked in the industry, on both sides of the Atlantic, plus he has the inclinations of an academic so he digs deeply into the theory of consumer behavior and markets. He challenges much of the established dogma of the industry and does so concisely and convincingly.

I have a couple of niggles. One is that the author sees advertising as being the way to build a brand image whereas promotions is synonymous with discounting, which of course erodes brand value. This is a simplistic perspective that was advanced by ad agencies in the 1970s and 80s. Promotions if well-conceived are invaluable at generating trial and can build brand image. (Early marketers like Claude Hopkins never recognized a distinction between advertising and promotion).

The second niggle is with the discussion of creative research. This subject is a minefield because most testing of creative is done clumsily. The testing methodology that Jones claims to work needs to be explained more completely and the evidence for it being effective should be laid out.

Jones is a leading thinker in the field and this book is his best - so if you want to make your advertising work harder - you should get it.

Excellent book, bought on the website though - www.nickjag.com/ - not the kindle version. It really does have some great techniques and ideas I would have never thought about or found for that matter. I use the facebook bot foxadder (FoxAdder.com) to help me promote bands and my t-shirt company. I found this book to be a great addition to my marketing tools for facebook. I actually feel like a facebook professional now! When you combine this book with the author's marketing forums, the author does a good job of keeping everyone on top of things

Excellent introduction to fashion drawing

I picked this one up used, for nearly nothing. Written for Fashion Students, this text is clear and simple, and teaches the reader how to translate their fashion imaginings into coherent drawings. Excellent for experienced sewers interested in learning to design their own fashions for the ground up, and any student/afficionado of fashion not already comfortable representing the human figure.

I highly recommend "5 Minutes to Great Real Estate
Ad" by John D. Mayfield, as a very valuable real
estate tool in attracting potenial buyers in your
local real estate market.
As a broker for many years, I found one of the most time consuming and difficult tasks each week, was preparing original, clever and creative ads that sound
interesting and make that buyer want to see the property. The same old boring ads that so many real estate companies submit leaves very little to the imagination of a very serious buyer looking for "that very special home, farm or business opportunity." The clever headings and information in this book
will prove very valuable to the broker or advertising manager whose job is to make those phones ring!!! I just wish I had had this book 25 years ago!"
I must admit this is my son, whom I am very proud of!!!

Food is Love is a singularly revealing insight into this consumptive and surprisingly constant dimension
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-05
Written by Katherine J. Parkin, Food is Love: Advertising and Gender Roles in Modern America is a scholarly examination of the American cultural precept that women should express love by serving food to their families (regardless of the actual amount of work involved in its preparation). In particular, the concept that women could use food preparation to give themselves sexual allure, make their marriage happy, and improve their family's social standings and prospects became the favored revolving theme of advertisers. Food advertisements at once both celebrated women's homemaking talents, and threatened women's insecurities to coerce the female demographic to buy the right products - their products. Heavily researched, with extensive notes and an index, Food is Love is a singularly revealing insight into this consumptive and surprisingly constant dimension of the American female and cultural psyche.

Business Slow? Get this book!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-17
Bob Bly has written an extremely helpful book for those times when business slacks off either due to a slow economy or personal reasons.

Whatever the case, this book has proven tips and techniques to jumpstart your business during those times when things get harried. Suggestions like getting a part-time job during a slow period may not be what we want to hear but it is relevant in that it works until the business picks up.

Other tips and techniques related to billing or customer service brim with wisdom and if put into practice will help any business large or small get through the slow times.

Lastly, although there is no guarantee against recession and financial downturn, it's what you DO during those times that will make or break you. Do yourself a favor and get this book so you come through in one piece!

Highly recommended.
