Simultaneously Gripping and Troubling
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-01
I had the pleasure of studying political economy with Professor Schneider as an undergraduate during the final stages of this book's production. Although I do not own a copy, I have read it in manuscript form. Prof. Schneider's book first relates the decline in American productivity over the past few decades to the lack of social mechanisms to support productivity growth. He then goes on to demonstrate how the traditional Democratic support base is eroding as the Democratic party switches its focus from providing these social mechanisms to satisfying special interests.

The book is clearly written, and his point is very well argued, drawing examples from issues ranging from national defense to public education and childcare. I highly suggest this to anyone, of any political affiliation, who is interested in a troubling yet gripping thesis about why the Democratic party is losing its once dominant power in American politics.

--
Interestingly, I wrote this review prior to the November 2002 elections. Prof. Schneider's thesis, also developed and published well prior to 2002, is almost a perfect fit to what many pundits and critics claim to be the reason for the Democrat's inability to pickup midterm seats. This book has turned out to be particularly prescient in that respect.

An new way of looking at presidential elections

Hart's book is an extraordinary read for anyone whose sick of hearing the same old things about presidential elections. Hart's book is essentially the findings of his research. Hart looks at all of the modern elections and finds amazing patterns in speech. Some candidates diction would surprise you. Also Hart finds amazing correlations between winners and losers. They really do speak different languages. Finally, Hart also examines the trends in "campaign talk". It's fascinating to see how campaigns have changed in such a short amount of time. If you love politics, you will love this book.

Lots of color reproductions of cats on labels and in
advertising from the nineteenth and early twentieth
century, with discussions of what happened to the
companies behind each image.

This book would be a delight for any cat-enthused
graphical-arts type person.

What's it doing out of print?

Dianna Edwards and Robert Valentine effectively collaborate in Catalog Design: The Art Of Creating Desire to showcase some of the most effective and trend setting developments and examples of the catalog as an American art form in service to the business of selling goods through promoting images. Of special interest is the opening chapter on the history of the catalog and its impact on the popular culture as well as individual aspirations. Profusely illustrated throughout, Catalog Design is highly recommended reading for students of American business, catalog designers, and anyone who ever picked up and leafed through a mail-order "dream book".
