Goodrum and Dalrymple detail, through text and pictures, the evolution of American advertising in a fascinating and easy-to-read way. Plus the pictures are very eye-catching. I just wish they'd kept the chapter on bad advertising.

He's an ad guy. He puts in late hours coming up with witty headlines. He works with the some of the smartest people in New York - and the dumbest. It's a demanding job that takes more then it gives back...even if it means taking away your entire life!

Most people in advertising run into the same road block as this main character (Is this work really important? And if so...Why?) Our hero in this book illustrate a common cynicism that makes you think, laugh and cry. Although the mood is dark, the ideas brought forth in this novel are very enlightening.

On the surface this book is about the perils of working in advertising. But deep down this book is about the perils of working in ANY job that demands you put more in your professional life then you do in your personal job. Although profoundly funny, this book is a reminder of what's really important in life.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a job to quit.

A crucial book to understand corporate propaganda

Inger Stole's book is an incredibly important tale of a forgotten history, the period in the 1930s when organized citizens stood up to and attempted to limit the power and influence of corporate propaganda in the form of the then nascent and now dominant corporate advertising industry. That fight was lost, as have been most important battles since against the intrusion of corporations into genuine culture and civil society. I hope this is the first of regular future books by Inger Stole who has an important place beside Klein, Ewen, Nader, McChesney and other critics of corporate power over our daily lives as citizens.

If you are interested in advertising and marketing communications, this bool will tell you from the first to the last. What I regard most highly in this book is the data and case study here is very new and hot, not old dated one. You can read the real market as well as get the basic principles you are desired to know as an advertisign person. This book covers Integrated Marketing Communications, not limited to advertising, which is onlly one of the diverse marketing communications disciplines. It is worth reading.

Give your spouse this test the next time you watch a commercial break on TV; ask him/her what general product the previous commercial was advertising and specifically what brand it was. If they can guess the first one, its an exceptional commercial, if they know the second one it was an extraordinary commercial, but if they know both and are furthermore encouraged to try the product, chances are the advertiser read this book. Seiden does an outstanding and convincing job at defining effective advertising, ads which you remember, and which demonstrate a unique product advantage (UPA). This approach/philosophy gained dominate acceptance in the 1950s but has been all but lost in todays trendy advertising marketplace. Seiden's book is very readable and really hits home. It was my inspiration to enter the advertising field and provides a clear focus and direction in the profession. My only criticism comes with Seiden's second half of the book where he attempts to convince his readers of the necessity to also make ads political correct. Although its true that advertisers need to evaluate their ads from both sides of the political spectrum, Seiden seems to use the 2nd half of his book as an opportunity to express his ideological views alone. The first half of his book is tremendous, and wholly complete. But skip the second half, you can catch it on Geraldo.

After reading Chuck's book I was left with one thought--where was this book when I began as a copywriter? It's the new bible for the ad industry--seamlessly integrating film and advertising concepts, as well as key insights on pre-conscious cognition and emotion and brands, not to mention the fundamentals and history lesson everyone in our profession needs to know. What a find! Consider my perception of ad researchers rocked, Chuck!

Whatever the stars are available for rating - they are not enough for the book. Deep, thoughtful, unbiased and with good humor. After being 15 years in advertising I've never thought that an outsider can have such an accurate view of our real processes and thinking. Author takes all the pains in studying the context of the ads (just browse the references - I've spent the whole day just making notes on them). To sum up: in my opinion Schudson to advertising is what Jaques Le Goff is to the Medieval History. If you rely on the "everyone knows that" type of knowledge - you'll have a lot of surprises.

This book is just GREAT !!!!!!!!! It is very well written, straight to the point, full of useful hints. It surely talks about the basics of marketing, but in a very realistic manner. I recommend to everyone interested in this topic.
