Dan Solomon and Brian Reich push the reader to revisit the term "media" when evaluating communication strategies. According to the authors, media is no longer just what we simply read, watch or click but should be considered as almost anything that touches our lives and not be limited to some format. There's a potential danger of making the definition of media so broad and all encompassing that the term becomes useless. But Solomon and Reich use this broad definition to make us appreciate fundamental shifts that are happening in how we communicate as a society. Framing insights from business and thought leaders from the past and on the front lines into actionable, memorable categories, the reader is given a potential path to organize the cacophony of communication technologies and punditry. The authors do not pretend that the path to mass communication enlightenment is through their book but they effectively point you in the right direction.

Media Rules should be purchased by every marketing and sales person in an organization who who wants to progress and star in a tough economy. It should e read by every CEO, CFO and CIO who wants to lead their organization deeper into this century. It should be read by every kid just graduating college who wants to get a good job by harnessing the tools they already use.

It's out there folks, you just need to understand the new terrain that controls our environment. Great insights from the authors along with terrific anecdotal evidence that will make you stand up and want to get to the office.

One word of warning - don't read it before trying to go to sleep - the topics are way too stimulating.

After reading this book, I now have a clear picture of the wonders of calendars and time-keeping. Reading this was just as wondrous as learning about the solar system for the first time. And the pictures of calendars that accompany the text are visually stunning. Leap Years, Babylonian Calendars, Almanacs of 1733, Christian Calendars, Hebrew Calendars, Lunar Time Vs Solar Time, Illustrating Calandars in Ancient America, Ancient Egypt, Nude Calendars of Marilyn Monroe, and many more put this book on my favorite-book shelf. TRULY GREAT!

The title of this book should be "Way Beyond Negotiating" because it truly is a one-stop resource for guidance along the way to securing potential clients. Every consultant needs this book to learn how to gracefully negotiate, successfully manage client relationships and appropriately set service fees. "How do I price my services?" is a question I constantly get from fellow consultants, and Susan's book clearly outlines an easy formula to answer this question. This feature alone makes the book worth purchasing; then, as a bonus, the additional chapters are chock full of crucial information necessary to successfully close the deal. I have recommended this book to others, and expect once you read it, you will too!

Wow! I couldn't believe this book. The hardest part of being in network marketing is bringing in new people. And I especially want to interest professionals. But they are so hard to get past their own prejudices. This book does it all for you. It is factual, heartwarming, and compelling. If you are a professional looking for some alternative outside of your current work, or if you are a network marketer looking for some means that will help you make a better presentation about our industry to your professional prospects, this book is the answer. Believe me, I have never found anything that answers people's questions and addresses their concerns about network marketing better than the messages and stories contained in The New Entrepreneurs.

First rate handbook on using the media to promote social change
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-04
I use this book for a graduate course I teach called Media Advocacy and Social Marketing. It very clearly outlines the various strategies and techniques involved in promoting changes in public policy through the use of mass media, including the internet. My students find the information both intriguing and easy to assimilate.

Larry Wallack, the lead author, is a long-time practitioner of media advocacy and a recognized leader in the field. His earlier book, Media Advocacy for Public Health, is also very useful as a course text and I recommend both publications highly.

Excellent guide for advocates

Review Date: 2002-03-06
Larry Wallack, Katie Woodruff and Lori Dorfman are recognized experts in media advocacy. This book was a textbook for my media communications course in a graduate school of public health. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a better understanding of how to work with the media to support advocacy and policy issues, in any subject area. It incorporates a workbook style, with examples of press releases, letters, etc. It's a how-to for hands-on folks. There are also other books focusing on media advocacy, written by Wallack and Dorfman, that I would highly recommend. But News for a Change is an excellent starting point for anyone who needs the media to cover an advocacy/policy issue.

An Art Director's Visual Bible

Brilliant- a must for art directors and COPYWRITERS
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-30
As a professional copywriter giving a positive review to this book might seem like professional suicide, but to be a copywriter is to develop strong CONCEPTS. Part of that is accepting the responsibility of using words effectively on behalf of your client - and sometimes that means using no words at all.

Really, this book is a collection of brilliant concepts that happen not to need much, if any, copy. It's as a conceptual book that this collection of work really shines.

Also, the concepts are diverse enough that they don't become boring or predictable, unlike some other collections that confine themselves to one medium or style of advertising, i.e. outdoor, television or "sex sells" photography.

I have to admit there is a minute amount of copy in some of these ads, but always less than a sentence. Plus, I think a tiny minority of these concepts would have been stronger communications with a hint more of copy.

All of that said, it's a book that every copywriter, art director or person who like to think of themselves as "creative" should have on their shelves.

I'd even go so far as to say that's it's more useful to have this book than the most recent One Show and it's a heck of a lot cheaper - and less likely to disappear.
