How to Get the Best Advertising from Your Agency

Brilliant! Amazing how it described our day-to-day concerns.

Review Date: 1999-03-24
I read this book because a former colleague recommended it. We were having problems dealing with our advertising agency--especially its creative people. My company would make what looked like a simple request, but we just could not get the results we wanted or expected. It's simply uncanny how accurately Ms. Salz describes the advertiser-agency relationship as my company has learned to understand it! For awhile, her book became required reading for everyone in our advertising dept. "Our people" have a new-found respect for "their people," and the agency is already sending us work of a quality we had only dreamed of before.

Really, really helpful and a quick, fascinating read

My agency AE gave me this book so I was skeptical about it, to say the least. But I have found it enormously helpful. Salz just demystifies the whole marketer-agency relationship. I especially loved the quotes from people on both the agency and marketer sides of the business telling the truth about what they want and need from the other members of the team. Salz explains what challenges I face and how to meet them as I go through the steps of developing an ad. Now I know what to do to motivate my agency people. How to critique advertising. And I know what not to do, too. I found the book invaluable and recommend it highly to anyone who's new to working with an agency. Or people who want to know how to get their agency teams to do the best work for them.

Dear Mr. Emery: I am very sorry to have to register this complaint about your book. I was halfway through reading it when I suddenly realized the book was such a valuable asset that I could no longer keep it in my house. I now keep the book at my bank in a safe deposit box. Unfortunately, this means I can only access the book during banking hours. This is really frustrating because your book is the most fact-filled and comprehensive source of doing business on the Internet I have been able to find (and believe me I've been looking!). Please do not write any more books as I only have a very small safe deposit box (besides the people in the bank are starting to look at me suspiciously because of my frequent visits to the vault). Yours in humor, Andre Demoraes nirvmind@csa.bu.edu

Vince and other readers, I just ordered *eight more copies* of 'How to Grow Your Business,' to add to the one I already own. I plan on giving one to each member of my staff, because they keep asking me questions that are already answered so clearly in the book. And I will have a couple of copies to give away to friends, just in case. I have seen Vince speak at conferences, and he really knows his stuff. He's low-key, has top-notch integrity, and cares about people. I have not found a more useful book on the subject, nor a nicer, more knowledgeable consultant. He gets my highest recommendation. --Peter Johnson-- Chief Vision Holder, www.GreenJungle.com

This is a wonderful book. I've read it at least 5 times. It gives an excellent cross section of creative people in advertising. You get to see for yourself what these people have in common, and how they differ. It is like having the greats of advertising giving you a pep talk. I highly recommend it :).

Firstly, let me say that I know author Paul Dahlstrom. I bought several books to send to friends. I sent one to a friend in Nigeria who is in Advertising there. He was thrilled to be able to receive a book which gave him insight into North American Advertising methodology. In his words, "Once again, I want to express my profound gratitude for sending me this book. I have read it and have re-designed my advertising copy in line with the advice of this seasoned communications expert. This book has helped me devise a 13 point strategy which I will use in (a current project)." ...From Mark in Jos, Nigeria.
This book is well written and has certainly already had far reaching impact.

I first used this in a college library reference section. On taking a fashion illustration class a few years later, I used notes and drawings I had made from the book and realized that I needed it for my own reference library.

I really fell in love with this book. The text is well-written and witty, as well as being very instructive. Each point is accompanied by fine illustrative examples, and the work show-cased here is of the highest calibre. I read this book cover to cover and find I am continually refering to it. No better guide for the young aspiring fashion illustrator, it also holds some jolly good tips for the general art student. I would recommend this book to any bibliophile, because this book is a Must for any fine collection.

A very broad but useful reference book about illustrating for fashion. Real hints and tips and a real analysis of what is required when illustrating. The clear categories and breakdowns, like the media techniques and fabric representation sections are very useful. The use of sketch books and working drawing sections are helpful to students. A very thorough book.

If You Care About Integrated Marketing, You'll Read This Book

This book has been a bible of sorts for me over the past few years. Anyone trying to figure out what's going on in social media and the changing nature of the buyer, should take a read through this first.

Some of the areas may be a bit hard to grasp, but the methodology makes sense, and the Schultz team breaks it down into a step-by-step process that will make your marketing programs measurable (if you follow their advice).

This book is not for the marketing hobbyist, but will be well worth it for anyone in business or marketing that cares about creating long-term relationships with their customers (and measuring the progress).

The Irish Job and Other True Stories from the World of Advertising

No need to be an "Ad man" to enjoy these stories.

Reading P. Eaton's book while sitting by a warm fire as a snowstorm rages outside reminds me how happy I am to be out of the cold, cold world of advertising. And how clients and their problems can provide many laughs to someone with the author's wit and unflagging aplomb in the face of disaster.

Eaton's stories show how deft use of parallel thinking produces unexpected ideas that make advertising and marketing history. And they reveal his delight in creating advertising that vigorously rocks clients' (and the public's) boats.

It could only be better if one was sharing a great bottle of wine with Eaton while listening to him spin his yarns in person.

Disclaimer: I was involved in the events of Eaton's title story in "The Irish Job". It happened; and it's distinctly funnier now than it was at the time.

You don't have to be an admirer of Peter Eaton's creative genius to be totally enthralled with this amazing window (actually a series of windows)into the world of advertising written by a man at the top of his game. All written with that dry British understatement about a field that too often overstates. This is a Harry Potter fantasy adventure, but it is all true, and, like Harry Potter, we can't wait for the next book in the series.

The history of Kodak photography and Kodak's advertising, which influenced American culture and the arts, is revealed in Kodak and the Lens of Nostalgia, a survey of the Kodak campaign to make photography a part of daily American life. Included are unused campaigns never published, in this fascinating survey of Kodak's ad history.

An exceptional work

As a student of Professor West's at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I was excited to read her work after enjoying her as a teacher. With "Kodak," she has meticulously reconstructed the campaigns used by Kodak throughout the late 1800s to mid 1900s. Initially, snapshots were seen as a means of leisure. Towards the early 1900s, however, Kodak's advertising scheme shifted the emphasis towards nostalgia and preservation of memories (more specifically, familial). Kodak even went so far as to use their advertising for propaganda (see "The Death Campaign"). All of this and more is included with beautiful illustrations. The book is a fascinating read, one that will provide a true sense of Americana through the ever-changing Kodak lense.

Ralph and Terry Kovel created a wonderful coffee table book that outlines some of the best ICONS in commercial and advertising art. This book has deep appeal to not only designers but anyone who has a love for retro design and just plain cool art direction. American trends and packaging and even culture spring out of the depiction of many of these gorgeous four color labels. I enjoyed this book and even my teenage kids found it a really neat thing to look at.

For history and antique buffs there is also enough information to make them happy as well.

I have a framed vintage fruit can label hanging in my kitchen and antique spice tins on a decorative shelf. I've always loved these reminders of earlier times. I'm glad to discover this book which expands even more my appreciation for the illustrations on old boxes, bottles and cans.
In addition to giving you historical information about label makers and food companies, it has listings of patents, dates, legal wording, and lithographers. The book has many uses as well. You can photocopy the labels to use in craft projects such as scrapbooking, card making or decoupage. If you want them on the high-quality glossy paper that's in the book, maybe just buy a 2nd copy to cut up. The colorful labels range in size from 2 x 2 to 6 x 8 inches.
