New ideas to make Shakespeare relevant
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-15
Mary Janell Metzger was a passionate instructor of Shakespeare when I took her class at Western, and I am excited to see this passion has expanded into an interesting look about how to make Shakespeare more relevant for high school students. Many of the most commonly taught Shakespeare plays are discussed, and the author looks at the larger issues presented in the play and offers guiding questions to use with classes to help them relate to the themes. This is a nice change from the typical laundry list of plot-based questions that so many Shakespeare instruction books offer. References to historical information relevant to the plays is also suggested to help students understand the issues. I found it very helpful for guiding the study of Shakespeare in my AP classes, but I also plan to apply some of the ideas in regular English classes.

This book is designed to give an insight to the reader. It was written by a Broadway Playwright, Margaret Webster. First she teaches about Shakespeare and the time he lived in. Then she goes into his early plays. She continues into the Histories, Comedies, Tragedies, Unpleasant Plays, Sad/High/Working Plays and Music at the Close. Then she relates all this to Shakespeare as we get it today. She helps us understand more what we read while reading Shakespeare.

An Excellent Resource

I was so frustrated with ordering guides and lesson ideas that turned out to be a fifty page guide of the most useless essays ever written on Shakespeare. This is the real thing. a 2 inch thick, 3 ring binder full of ideas that you can use in your class. You don't just get a bunch of worksheets, you get progressive exercises that look at problems in the plays, issues your students want to know about, and background that helps them contextualize the information. I wish I would have had this book when I started teaching. I find myself going back to it again and again.

This beautiful and lovingly produced edition of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is an ideal vehicle for introducing children to the delights of Shakespeare. And in the bargain, adults will draw a share of delight for themselves. The prose rendition is intelligent and lively and true to its source, and the illustrations provide a spirited reflection of the play's world.

Shakespeare's wit is on the mark. His vocabulary still stings in today's world as it did in his. The book is well organized with amble references. I carry it in my briefcase for quick use.
