Award Winning Examination of Attitudes about Desert SW
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-13
Focuses on early Anglo American views of the desert Southwest, and the destructiveness which threatens to destroy the landscape as it originally existed. Uses literature to show how attitudes have changed, have come to support the sustenance of the desert rather than its destructive transformation. But is there still time? Winner, Border Regional Library Association's 1998 Southwest Book Award.

'Poem Electronique' in detail
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-25
This book tells the story of the world's first fully automated multi-media experience. The Phillips pavillion at the 1958 Worlds Fair was unusual in that it didn't merely showcase the company's products---Philips demonstrated the technological feats they were capable of through an eight minute display of light, film, color and sound known as 'Poem Electronique.' Two of the key figures in the story are, of course, the architect Le Corbusier and the composer Edgard Varese; anyone interested in either of these two would enjoy this book. Those familiar with Varese's music from this project would be especially interested to learn the context in which it was originally set. Iannis Xenakis also appears here as Le Corbusier's assistant. Anyone interested in Xenakis would enjoy this book as it is after completion of the 'Poem Electronique' that music becomes his primary focus. The book is well-researched, well-written, and well-presented. There are many many illustrations, which help---through them we get a better idea of what the 'Poem Electronique' experience was like, we get to see how the designs for it progressed on paper, and we get to see the constructions as they were being put together. This book examines a very unique meeting of art and technology, one that can neve again be experienced as originally intended.

The magic of crafting stories.....

Review Date: 2008-04-22
We all think we can tell a story. But Jo Carson not not only TELLS a story, but also teaches us the how and why of it, as well. This book teaches and entertains and enlightens....shines a light on the magic that words can do. But be open to learning in other realms, as well. She gets right down to the ATOMS of the story!

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves words and magic and the crafting of stories.

A really good accessment of the Black Film History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-25
An easy read that brings you from the Father of African American Cinema, Oscar Micheaux, in the 30's to the films of the 70's to the current films of Spike Lee and beyond, covering such films and filmmakers as Julie Dash with her "Daughters of the Dust". A good book that can be read by teens to adults.

CW16 The Practice of Psychotherapy
CW17 Development of Personality (Collected Works of C.G. Jung, Volume 17)
CW18 The Symbolic Life
plus index/bibliography (CW19 & 20). It does not, however, include his autobiography (Memories, Dreams, Reflections, his interviews (C.G. Jung Speaking), his Letters (2 volumes of "Letters" plus the Freud/Jung Letters: C. G. Jung Letters in Two Volumes 1906-1961, Letters, & The Freud/Jung Letters). Thus (with the 5 missing volumes) they total to 24 (2 dozen) volumes of Jung in English that we can read (mostly translated from German). So, this set of 19 real volumes is the bulk of Jung presently available in English. It's expensive (since it's in hardback) but incredible. Jung broke new ground that even today is scary to most psychologists/psychiatrists. He included mythology, some religion, some sociology/social psychology, etc. Jung was indubitably a genius & most assuredly a groundbreaker. This collection is invaluable to the serious Jung student. I think most of the Jung institutes/centers require its reading (if not ownership) of their candidates. Incredible brilliance herein.

P.S. I'd put in all the links, but the maximum allowed is ten.

Great Book for Introducing Art to Young Children
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-08
I teach elementary art, and this is a great book to use with my kindergarteners and first graders. These children are just learning to read, and they enjoy reading the simple text along with me. They also enjoy searching for the dog in each painting. Some pictures are harder than others, so it provides a good challenge. The kids like this book. They usually ask me to read it again! This book deals with something that all children like - dogs! - and introduces them to different paintings and different styles of art at the same time.

The book gives a really exploration of that drama may do with history. And particullary the so difficult history of the Shoah.
The book has a very good knowledge of theatre of Israel and of New York. It's really a very interessant exploration. And the book has also a pertinent approach of the tragedy of the Shah.

Television Theory Rewritten
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-25
Television Studies is now booming institutionally if not intellectually. The banality of many of the cloned analyses of particular shows or the remedial narrative accounts of available approaches to television texts has unwittingly contributed to the naturalization of the technology itself. This text is the antidote. Dienst's book provides a series of fresh, beautifully written re-readings of the work of key thinkers (including Marx, Heidegger, Raymond Williams, Deleuze, and Derrida) in terms of television theory. His re-examination of Marx's theory of value "after television" shows us the continuing explanatory power of Capital and Grundrisse. Never reductive and always stimulating, this book offers more starting points for critical students of television than any recent text. What is more, this is "theory" at its best, opening up new ways of thinking about the ownership, value and significations in contemporary culture. This is a "breakthrough" book -- read it!

The Drama of New York's Bridges in Paintings and Words
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-05
I was raised in New York, living there the first 21 years of my life. Being a New Yorker means having its numerous bridges engrained in your mind, in your images of the city. I am someone who loves bridges and own a number of books on the topic. This book includes strong and graceful and beautiful paintings of the bridges. They are often shown at night, looking up at dreamy clouds. During the day, they are part of the beauty of the city or its industry. Interestingly, most of the book consists of accompanying dramatic writings by native New Yorkers or visitors who have loved the city and its bridges. They include Alfred Kazin, John Dos Passos, Joyce Carol Oates, Hart Crane and Le Corbusier. And even Helen Keller! I bought the book in 1998 at the Museum of the City of New York and have an autographed copy from the artist. I thumb through it regularly since then in my home in St. Paul, Minnesota, 33 years since I left New York.
