I teach Drama at a Classical Christian school and whereas Shakespeare is encouraged, some of his work is well, um...shall we say, a bit "naughty".
I like this book because Mr.Wilson gives brief scenes that show range of character without making me blush in front of the Headmaster!

Ambitious and Affecting Work

Nicola Luckhurst's `Science and Structure in Proust's "A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu"' is an ambitious and affecting work.

So much has been written about Proust, so why read another book on "A La Recherche"?

Luckhust's study has already won recognition among Proust scholars for its sensitivity to his writing. But what I found moving - as a lay reader of Proust - is the degree to which Luckhurst is alive to "A La Recherche" in all its richness and complexity.

After reading her "Science and Structure" I was struck by how many contemporary works on Proust have an unconsciously limited or impoverished expectation of the novel.

This study is profoundly different. Luckhurst engages with Proust's desire to write a novel that is literally all encompassing - and in particular, in its desire to encompass the life of the mind and body. She discerns an underlying struggle - which also generates his writing - between parsimony and abundance, and in doing so recovers the exhilaration of Proust's work.

If you love Proust and want a deeper engagement with his work you will want to read this book.

Especially recommended for use in curriculum planning for classrooms of students in grades 4-8, Science Fiction Readers Theatre is a handy and "user friendly" resource for teachers interested in a participation-based approach that uses creative, science-fiction themed scripts to fuel students' imaginations and help them develop their reading and speaking skills. A very useful book for language arts curriculums, Science Fiction Readers Theatre is a welcome and recommended addition to Educational Resource & Curriculum Supplementation reference collections.

The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino, 1058-1105 (Cambridge Studies in Palaeography and Codicology)

The most important book in paleography of our generation.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-18
This volume ranks with E.K. Rand's Studies in the Script of Tours, or Bernard Bischoff's Sudostdeutsch Schreibschulen (but it is much more readable than the latter), as one of the major paleographical studies of the twentieth century. The product of 35 years of study at Monte Cassino and in libraries throughout Europe and North America, this book presents the first comprehensive study of any medieval writing center to fully integrate paleographical research with the study of medieval libraries, the transmission of texts -classical, patristic, and medieval - with medieval Latin literature, art history and architectural history, medieval liturgy and music, medieval medicine and science. In short, it presents the manuscripts from eleventh- and twelfth-century Monte Cassino in their contemporary context. Detailed analyses of the scribes and scribal practices are illustrated by numerous plates. Every scholar interested in medieval writing and every teacher of Latin paleography or manuscript studies should have this book to hand, and should read it again and again.

This is a wonderful book for scholars interested in "manuscriptology" - or looking at the whole manuscript. Hindman takes a next step where many scholars tend to leave off by looking at Chretien manuscripts that have been previously ignored, or barely studied. She analyzes them with social and cultural questions in mind, paying attention to clues about usage and reception.

The abundant images are great - and helpful!

This is a beautiful book in every way. The selection of art juxtaposed with the intriguing range of literary excerpts combine to make the reader do exactly what the editors want: to "see" jazz. I bought extra copies as Christmas gifts.

Fascinating Insight into the Red Center

Review Date: 2003-07-05
Haynes has put a great deal of effort, energy, and insight into an incredible exhaustive exploration of what the Australian Desert means to Australians and how this attitude came about . Especially interesting to me are the sections on Australian Explorers and how their hardships, especially failures, have been transformed into myths. As an American who spent a semester in Australia, taking an Australian Studies course, I found this book supported what I had learned, while futhering my interests. Haynes provides numerous books, films, poems, and works of art in detailed discussions about many big name Australian creatives such as Nolan and White. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to know more about Australian Culture.

This is not the entire Female Spectator (which would be very long indeed, and much more pricey). Instead, it is an affordable, carefully chosen selection from Eliza Haywood's _Female Spectator_ (a magazine-like publication that ran for several years). The introduction is top-notch. I own this book and refer to it often. This is a great book to read a little at a time. It gives wonderful insight into issues of 18th-century life for women (marriage, manners, and morals). I highly recommend it.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-04
For two weeks in July of each year, on the rural Tennessee campus of Sewanee, The University of the South, the Sewanee Writers' Conference meets to encourage"creative writing and creative writers." The Conference has been meeting every year since 1989 when it's founder, poet Wyatt Prunty, used a donation from Tennessee William's estate to establish a location for writers to gather and practice their craft in a place known for its "remoteness without cultural dislocation." Sewanee Writers on Writing is a collection of 14 "Craft Lectures" selected from the first ten conferences and offers selections by playwrights, poets and fiction writers. Some of the contributors include Russell Banks, Alice McDermott, Ernest J. Gaines, Horton Foote and Marsh Norman. These are world class writers including Pulitzer Prize winners as well as a host of other national awards. This collection is a must for writers, professional or amateur, who are interested in cultivating the art and craft of writing. The insights, suggestions and experiences of these masters of the written word are as inspiring as they are informative. Tennessee Williams truly gave a gift that keeps on giving. A real literary treasure from some of the best in the business.

Sexual Dissidence: Augustine to Wilde, Freud to Foucault

Sexuality uncovered

With this book Dollimore analyzes sexuality in terms of the differing conceptions of Andre Gide and Oscar Wilde. Where Wilde saw surface and performance, Gide saw a representation of essential self. Taking Wilde's side in the argument, Dollimore uses this analysis to deconstruct sexuality as it appears in early texts.
