NEW QUEST
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-19
This work of Horsley's launches an entire "New Quest" to find not just a historical Jesus, but a contextually historical Jesus, that most seeing, do not see and hearing, do not hear (Matt 13:13). Readers of this volume will seek and find the voice of Jesus within the "hidden transcript" that has been veiled, yet preserved throughout the ages within the verses of the Gospels. Horsley's work is intriguing for even the most "seasoned" biblical scholar, yet readable for anyone interested in setting aside dogma and cutting through to discover the true meaning of the words and actions of Jesus.

Review Date: 2008-02-04
The collaborative work of academicians Richard W. Beach, Amanda Haertling Thein, and Daryl Parks, "High School Students' Competing Social Worlds: Negotiating Identities And Allegiances In Response To Multicultural Literature" focuses upon how working-class high school students identity construction is influenced, shaped and affected by discourses and cultural practices experienced in their classroom, school, family, sports, community, and workplaces. Of particular value for pre-service and in-services classroom teachers engaged in developing their own literature curriculum and instructional methods, "High School Students' Competing Social Worlds" shows how responding to the cultural differences in these diverse settings presents a set of challenges to teenage allegiances to 'status quo discourses and cultural models'. Also covered are means by where classroom teachers can motivate their students to clarify and alter their value stances with respect to issues of race, gender, and class, as well as providing support for (and validation of) their self-interrogation. Based on current theory and research, and utilizing case-study profiles and analysis of classroom discussion, "High School Students' Competing Social Worlds" is especially recommended and instructive reading for understanding the role of institutions in shaping adolescent identities and lives, as well as identifying the needs that must be addressed to improve those institutions.

A hilarious collection for any angler, it makes a great gift (since this is the holiday season). I bought this for my dad, and I'm sure he will love it. An amateur fisherman myself, I even enjoyed many of the cartoons as I thumbed through it.

A Well-Researc hed Work

Review Date: 2007-05-19
Ever since her co-written book CITY ON FIRE, Lisa Odham Stokes has become one of America's foremost authorities on Hong Kong Cinema. It is not surprising that the new series of dictionaries by Scarecrow Press has brought out this comprehensive work which every University Library should obtain. Based on a detailed knowledge of Hong Kong Cinema and familiarity with reference material published by the Hong Kong Film Archive and Hong Kong Film Festivals, this dictionary presents a wealth of information that should prove indispensable for anybody undertaking detailed research in this area.

Previous books have covered Hong Kong's martial arts cinema and its various genres. But the merit of this dictionary is its meticulous attention to influences from pre-war Shanghai cinema, Mandarin and Cantonese melodramatic and operatic traditions, as well as the past and present cultural interplay between Mainland China and the former British colony. Those seeking references to transient action heroines such as Cynthia Khan and Moon Lee will be disappointed but they have already been covered extensively in popuular surveys. What makes this dictionary really distinctive is both its sense of a particular historical tradition that has influenced the development of one of the world's most exciting national cinemas as well as references to the current state of the industry. The friendship between Jacky Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai and the former's positive influence on the latter in his personal life is just one of the many nuggets of information that the author has supplied. She also mentions the Chinese as well as the English titles of various films as well as the full Chinese names of several actors and stars.

This series is designed for university libraries as a reference work. It really fulfills that function but it should also attract any individual eager to learn more about Hong Long cinema despite its high cost. I've already learned much from this work and have cited it in a monograph I'm writing so believe it will be true for many other people. The author has every reason to be proud of her work in this field, both in her previous indispensable book on Hong Kong cinema as well as her continuing contributions to the journal ASIAN CINEMA and her various interviews with many leading Hong Kong actors and directors. This is definitely an outstanding work.

Excellent overview of the formative years of US broadcasting

This book is the second in a series of three books that comprehensively cover the American broadcasting and radio industry from the very beginning through 1970. This particular book covers the period between 1933 and 1953, when much of the current structure (networks, sponsorship, etc) of the business were solidified. The whole series is outstanding, especially volumes I & II, both of which I would highly recommend to anyone interested in understanding how the US radio/TV business evolved.

Pioneering effort in performance practices; still useful.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1996-09-20
While copyrighted in 1942, this small book addresses the problems facing performers of Western Art music. Interpretation and Performance Practices is the darling of academia today, and the "experts" in this field demand adherence to their orthodxy. To them, Dorian's effort is viewed as "quaint". But to mere mortals, this book is still an indispensable tool for finding one's way through the wilderness of stylistic practices in art music

This treatise is recommended to even the most involved specialty library, as well as anyone concerned with literary history at the college level. This is an important reference, with the first volume covering the colonial book in the atlantic world. Publishing, writing, and book history is related from the start of the colonial period in America through 1790, with important connections made between the book trade and cultural exchange between English and American audiences. In-depth and absorbing.

Review of Daniel Cohen's 'Horror In the Movies'
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-28
I am proud to review Daniel Cohen's 'Horror In the Movies'.
This unique book, found in the children's section at libraries all around the world, portrays the horror genre in films with a different darkness. Some of the movies featured in this exciting book are
The Excorcist, The Omen, and Carrie. It also contains some classics like The Cabinet of Dr. Calagari, and several other silent films.

Daniel Cohen has a way of detailing the fine art of horror in the movies with his upfront approach to writing. You won't see any pictures of corny monsters like in other books. This head on approach to confronting the horror in film, which everyone has enjoyed at one time, opens a new door to the reality of how horror classics like Rosemary's Baby and Dawn of the Dead have spawned other cult classics dealing with the paranormal world of ghosts, demons, and witchcraft.

I highly recommend Horror in the Movies to anyone with an interest in the Macob!
