SHORT BUT ENJOYABLE BOOK

Happy Feet was one of the more enjoyable animated feature films that came out in 2006. The Essential Guide from DK books is not only an outstanding guide to the characters and story of the movie, but also quite educational for younger readers. Kids will not only have the chance to relive the fun of the movie but also learn about the life of penguins in the frigid Antarctic.

Each of the main characters like Mumble, Gloria, Memphis, and Norma Jean get their own pages devoted to them with info about their likes and dislikes, favorite quotes, and more. Mixed in with the film info are fold out pages that give the reader lots of interesting facts about penguins such as how male penguins keep the eggs warm while the mother penguins are out finding food. From there you'll meet the other stars of the film including all the Adelie Penguins including the riotous Ramon, played wonderfully by Robin Williams.

Kids will also visit places and events from the film such as the local school where poor Mumbles struggles to find his heartsong. And then there is the encounter with the alien invaders, otherwise known as the human whaling ships. The Essential Guide is jammed full of dazzling color pictures from the movie as well as photos of real life penguins. It's short at just 50 pages but kids who loved the movie will love the book as well. Who doesn't like looking at penguins!

Harry Houdini: A Magical Life

Review Date: 2007-08-06
Born Ehrich Weiss in Budapest, Hugary 1874, Harry Houdini was the poor immigrant son of a rabbi.
Due to his "death defying stunts" which ranged from making an elephant disappear to his "Milk Can Escape"
and bigger than life theatrics, Houdini has gone down in history as the world's most famous magician. With
a legacy of amazing escapes and illusions and featured in six Hollywood films magicians today still ponder over his tricks. As a young boy of four Harry immigrated with his family to the United States. When the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Harry's father took him to see the gruesome entertainer, Dr. Lynn, whose final act was to dismember a man and then put him back together again. At age six, young Harry was hooked for life and devoted the rest of his life finding ways to amaze an audience in the art of illusion. In his own words, Houdini comments, " Never try to fool children. They expect nothing and therefore see everything." Harry was full of adventure and fun and was always young at heart; with this rule of thumb; he kept the mind of a child close at hand and his magic always remained a mystery as well as delightful entertainment for the
whole family. This tile, the seventh of the "Snapshot Biography series" presents an up-close, personalized view of the life of a great man who has changed the face of magic. Large, oversized illustrations, many black and white photographs, a detailed timeline, a great index, and a list of actual places to find out more about Houdini will engage youngsters and make this a sure winner. For ages 8-13.

Wheelock's jesting with intelligence

As a scholar of humour and wit in the instrumental music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, I found this book to be of the highest standards. Wheelock writes with intelligence and charm and moves through the issue of Haydn's joviality with logic and with good pace. She examines the need to make jokes in music and coherently explains the 18th century view on humour and wit from a literary perspective. The musical examples are well presented and very clearly explained and the essay is completed with guts and style. She is never afraid to criticise and this is yet another feather in the cap of this fine musicoligist.

This was a great book for fast research I wanted to do, and had no time for more complicated books. It can be read by both children and adults.
There are many photos, paintings, chronological charts and quotations by the great artist. It's very well organized and cohesive.
I recommend this book for everyone.

An art genius

This book is part of the Artists in Their Time sieres by Scholastic. The series features artists from different media and styles, including, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Paul Cezanne and Paul Gaugin, amongst others. This book is intended for the young student who would be in middle school. As an introduction to the works of Moore and a biography it is very good. The approximately fifty pages are very colorful and expressive by displaying some of the drawings and sculptures of Henry Moore. The book does a good job of explaing tecniques and the difficulties and process of working with certain media. The influences of Moore are noted as are the results of those influences.I found this book very informative even though I had prior knowledge of some of the art works of Henry Moore. Without doubt the student will be blown away by the pieces featured in this book and probably want to learn more about this man. The book features an excellent glossary and a listing of museums and galleries around the world that have pieces by Moore. This will be very valuable(some have virtual tours) for the student who is doing a report on Moore as the listing of museums and galleries includes the web sites. This is a great book for the middle school student to learn about one of best modern artists, who was genius in his field. For further reading(or looking at the sculptures) you may find some of these books useful Henry Moore; (Twentieth-century masters), Henry Moore or any other of the fine books by David Mitchinson about Henry Moore. Recommended for middle school and community libraries and the young students introduction to the wonderful art world of Henry Moore.

This story of Greek mythology is about Aethra's son Theseus. He was brave. One day he moved a boulder and found golden sandals and a sword, which were left by his father, King Aegeus, which meant it was time for him to go to his father in Athens. Thesus met with many foes and monsters on his journey. In nearby Crete, King Minos kept a terrible minotaur, who wanted 14 young people from Athens to be sacrificed. Theseus volunteer to go, and when he arrived bravely in Crete, King Minos' daughter was impressed and sought help for him. He killed the minotaur during the night, then escaped with everyone including the King's daughter. Poseidon came to their aid in the escape.

Beautiful, detailed, colorful drawings.

Masculinity at its finest

Review Date: 2000-08-11
For John Lash, the archetypal Hero is not only male, but a prototype of masculinity. In the first part of the book, Lash explores the types of Heroes and the evolution of the Hero over time. The central part of the book are plates, many in color, drawn from art work the world over; the bewildering variety of representations of the Hero is the most stunning part of the book. In the final section, "Themes", Lash explores, through a combination of images and text, several recurring ideas in the Hero Myth, including the initiation, the hunt, the Hero and the horse, the Hero in Love, and the Hero facing death. This is a wonderful mythological exploration of timeless men's issues.
