The newest addition to the Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures series, The Great Chiasmus: Word And Flesh In The Novels Of Unamuno by Paul R. Olson is an extensive literary analysis of the classic works of Miguel de Unamuno. Focusing especially on Unamuno's use of the chiasmus, a reversal in the order of words or parts of speech in parallel phrases ("blanca como la neive y como la nieve fria"), The Great Chiasmus is a meticulous, scholarly work which is strongly recommended, especially for complementing the experience and appreciation of Unamuno's writings, whether in their original Spanish or in an English translation.

Benefitting from the professional art direction of Anne-Marie Schniper and an informative Foreword by herbert Haag, "Great Women Of The Bible In Art And Literature" by Dorothee Soelle (Professor of Theology, Union Theological Seminary, New York City) and historian Joe H. Kirchberger, offers and showcases biographical synopsis of the stories of the eleven women named in the bible, and one referred to only as the 'Woman with the Ointment', as represented in literature and art over the centuries. The women include Eve and Lilith (Adam's first wife referred to in Judaic commentaries on the Torah), Sara and Hagar, Tamar, Ruth the Moabit, Abigail, Judith, Esther, Mary and Martha, and Mary of Magdala. Enhanced with a bibliography, and a listing of literary sources, "Great Women Of The Bible In Art And Literature" offers an informed and informative text based upon biblical and non-biblical sources, along with superb paintings and visual images - perhaps the most unusual of which is a depiction of Lilith taken from a Persian amulet. A simply beautiful book from beginning to end, "Great Women Of The Bible In Art And Literature" is especially recommended for personal, church, seminary, and academic library collections - and would make an especially appropriate selection as a community library "Memorial Fund" acquisition.

Charles H. Spurgeon is considered by many to be the greatest preacher of the 19th century. In April 1891, within a year of his death, Spurgeon addressed the Pastor's College Conference, giving one of the greatest addresses of his life. In it, he set out to explain to pastors how they should engage in "the crusade against error and sin."

The three tools of the pastor are "Our Armoury", "Our Army" and "Our Strength". Our Armoury is the Bible, and herein Spurgeon lays out how and why pastors should use it. Our Army is the church, and he explains how the pastor should equip and use this army. And finally, Our Strength is none other than the Holy Spirit, and he covers how and why the pastor should rely upon Him.

This is an excellent address, showing the power and intelligence that form the bedrock of Spurgeon's reputation. Though this book is written from an unapologetically Calvinist viewpoint, many of Spurgeon's points are applicable to all churches everywhere. As such, I highly recommend this book to every pastor everywhere.

Excellent collection from an eloquent Christian writer
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This is a marvelous collection of some classic Christian writings, lovingly edited and quality packaged for a modern audience. Some time ago I got an old copy of the very small book, "booklet," really, of "The Greatest Thing in the World" at a sidewalk sale, not realizing Henry Drummond was such a pillar of Nineteenth century evangelical writing. This extended talk may possibly be the best essay ever written on 1 Corinthians 13 -- "the Love chapter." I was very happy to find several of his other writings collected into a single work.

Highly recommended, and not just for evangelical Christians (which I definitely am not). It's beautiful, thoughtful writing on the life of the spirit; succinct, inspiring and original interpretations of Scripture and basic Christian ideas, beliefs, and culture.

Volume 6: 1912

"The Griffith Project" is an ongoing series that aims to provide "a systematic analysis of all the films in which [D.W.] Griffith was involved, from his debut as performer in PROFESSIONAL JEALOUSY (1907) to THE STRUGGLE (1931), his last feature."

Detailed information is presented for each film: credits, plot synopsis, excerpts from contemporary sources, and expert commentary. While clearly aimed at a scholarly audience, the language is completely accessable and laypeople should not find the material intimidating. Indeed, anyone with an abiding interest in Griffith will be captivated by this series. Just about the only deficiency is the lack of screenshots, though I understand that an entire volume may be devoted to these at the close of the series.

Contributing to Volume 6 are Paolo Cherchi Usai, Eileen Bowser, Ben Brewster, André Gaudreault, Lee Grieveson, Tom Gunning, Steven Higgins, Lea Jacobs, Joyce Jesionowski, J.B. Kaufman, Charlie Keil, David Mayer, Russell Merritt, Scott Simmon, Kristin Thompson and Yuri Tsivian.

Films covered in Volume 6 are Mender of Nets, Under Burning Skies, Siren of Impulse, Iola's Promise, Goddess of Sagebrush Gulch, Girl and Her Trust, Punishment, Fate's Interception, Female of the Species, Just Like a Woman, One Is Business the Other Crime, Lesser Evil, Old Actor, Lodging for the Night, His Lesson, When Kings Were the Law, Beast at Bay, Home Folks, Temporary Truce, Lena and the Geese, Spirit Awakened, School Teacher and the Waif, Man's Lust for Gold, Indian Summer, Heaven Avenges, Massacre, Man's Genesis, Sands of Dee, Pueblo Legend, Narrow Road, Child's Remorse, Inner Circle, Change of Spirit, Unseen Enemy, Two Daughters of Eve, Friends, So Near Yet So Far, Feud in the Kentucky Hills, In the Aisles of the Wild, One She Loved, Painted Lady, Musketeers of Pig Alley, Heredity, Gold and Glitter, My Baby, Informer, Brutality, Unwelcome Guest, New York Hat, My Hero, Burglar's Dilemma, Cry for Help, God Within, Three Friends, Telephone Girl and the Lady, Oil and Water, Adventure in the Autumn Woods, Tender-Hearted Boy, Chance Deception, Fate, Father's Lesson, Misappropriated Turkey, Brothers, Drink's Lure, and When Love Forgives.

This study was a real blessing to my marriage. My husband and I have been married for 5 years and we still found this very beneficial and quite convicting. It covers important topics such as: personal christian growth, growing in your prayer life together, learning to study the Bible together, understanding how the Holy Spirit works in your lives, becoming diciples of Christ and creating diciples for Christ. I also really liked the workbook format. The study can be done as a couple or with a larger group.

A working dichotomy of three distinct theatrical approaches
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-09
I am a student of Dr Lavender's and the book was on the reading list for his course at the Central School of Speech & Drama. I purchased the book tentatively considering selfish factors such as sales and authorial royalties. However despite this initial reticence and cynicism this is a thoroughly researched and crafted piece of theatrical commentary.

Lavneder focuses on three of the great contemporary theatrical visionaries and places their working methods under a sharlply focused scholarly microscope. His remarks on Brook's working methods are particularly insightful when reading The Shifting Point concurrently.

This is a fine piece of work and one that any student of directing, contemporary theatre practice or indeed Shakespeare would do well to read.

Andy didn't pay me to say write this. Go buy it!

I loved this book, it has as much to say about today as it does
about Shakespeare. It's complex but witty, and actually fun to read,
a rare thing these days in criticism of Shakespeare.
