I found the photos and directions in this book to be the most complete and the easiest to follow that I've ever seen in a book of this type. The completed charaacters are gorgeous. This is a book that I would definitely recommend to both beginners and advanced doll makers. Superb!

The first book on contemporary British feminist drama to marry cultural theory to dramatic text whilst simultaneously exploring the aspect of performativity. Foucault and Deleuze's theories are used to foreground aspects of contemporary British culture.

Dr Lizbeth Goodman, author of Contemporary Feminist Theatres says: '[Dimple Godiwala] focuses primarily on texts read in political and social context, and shines some illuminating spotlights on performance as well...'

Review from one his students

Being a tutee of the author has given me a unique perspective on the work. Peter's examination of the animosity between Arnold Bennett and Virginia Woolf is highly illuminating and will be useful to first years stressed about Moderations. This particular reviewer was also keen on Peter's use of Bourdieu throughout the text. Bourdieu's sociological theories have come into prominence, especially as they formed the basis of Toril Moi's new work on Feminism (What is a Woman) and it seems to be that these two critics would find much in common. All in all, this is a good effort and, while it betrays the eagerness of style that is common with younger academics, signals the emergence of a radically historical and radically textual politics in the literary sphere. We await with eagerness his latest effort tackling the linguistics of detective fiction.

A seminal contribution towards understanding a masterpiece
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-05
As a lifelong and devoted student of Lewis -- and one who has read, re-read, written about, and lectured on Mere Christianity -- I was startled and deeply gratified to learn that the master conceived his touchstone idea, composed the masterpiece that conveys it, and perfected his popular, lean, direct apologetic style under what can only be regarded as the tutelage of the BBC. The late Justin Phillips (who died before completing his book: the manuscript was edited and brought to publication by his daughter Laura Treneer) first provides a genuinely riveting war-time context as only a lifelong BBC-man could. He then captures, with ample narrative skill and astonishingly adroit quotations from correspondence, the "Beeb's" persistence and scalpel-like judgment, as well as CSL's reservations, vexations, achievement, and finally his overwhelming success. Along the way the reader gets a concrete feel for Lewis's travel, work-habits, friendships and homelife which, though not entirely new, are utterly fresh (for example, the contributions of Jill Freud . . . ) And as a bonus we are treated to a chapter on Dorothy L. Sayers and the BBC: The corporation was sorely overmatched! From now on, Richard Baxter + CSL = Mere Christianity must become Baxter + Lewis X the BBC = Mere Christianity and a good deal of the master's pellucid style.

A seminal book on feminist theatre in England

Wandor's book is one of the first to look at feminism on the British stage. An accessible and lucid book, it charts English theatre's twentieth century tussle with feminist writers and practitioners. It focuses on sexual politics in the arena of British theatre. Her next book, Look Back in Gender is also excellent and a good companion to Understudies. Other similar books written later are Aston's Feminist Theatre, Case's Feminist Theater & Godiwala's Breaking the Bounds.

Oh, yeah! Now every child will learn how to draw their favorite Cars characters and even color them. It's simple really. They just follow directions and when they're done, they can give them a custom paint job! How cool is that? I recommend this book to any parent who's ever wanted their child to be just as creative as I.

My 6 and 7-year-old sons love cars and trucks and books about them. This is the first book I've seen that has both a story and step-by-step instructions for drawing cars and trucks. Instructions are simple enough for young kids, yet they yield a cute drawing at the end. I recommend this book!

I have been so pleased with this craft book. My daughter is six, and with a little help from me she has been very successful in completing some of these adorable crafts. The illustrated step-by-step directions are extremely clear and easy to follow. The materials are easy to find. There is a nice variety of skills involved (ie. painting, clay, simple sewing, etc.) Finally, so far all of our projects have turned out to look just as good as the samples in the book. A great find!
