Literature in Art Books

Eye catching, interesting, imaginative, and inspiring. These are things that hold a young persons attention and give them the interest to pursue art. Colleen Carroll has collected a fine group of art pieces that does all of these, plus her writing of the art and the artists help young people see not only animals, but everything in a different way. She asks many questions to help a child think and imagine. I think this is a fantastic book that should be in every child's library,even if most of the artists in the book are dead..... oh...except for me! My painting is on page 32.

Mr. Erwin's insight on this subject is incredibly thoughtful and thought provoking. This is an amazing piece of work and I highly recommend it!

Another Future: Poetry And Art In Postmodern Twilight is an anthology of critical essays about contemporary poetry, art, culture, and politics by independent scholar and poet Alan Gilbert. Divided into three sections, "Considering How Material Documents Can Be", "Territories and Other Forms of Knowing", and "Meaning Politics Without Regrets", Another Future questions the social context of modern poetry and charters a discourse for thinking about contemporary culture in terms beyond post-modernism. A scrutiny so meticulous as to resemble a documentary, Another Future is especially recommended reading for students of modern poetry.

ANOTHER LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS is a monograph of paintings, both finished and in preparatory sketches, each oil on canvas and rather large in size, that are gathered and presented with the titles assigned to each painting by poet friends of the painter. Dorothea Tannning has created twelve elegant and dreamy blossoms and pairs each painting with a poetic response by some of our most gifted poets today - James Merrill, Adrienne Rich, John Ashbery among them. The result is a beautiful little book that speaks quietly to our sense of beauty. Here is a treasure book to not only add to your bedside stand to close the day with sweetness, but here is also that 'book for someone special' that is ever on the list for readers and art lovers alike. Highly recommended.

This anthology on the anthology in Jewish Literature contains not only a rich introductory essay by editor David Stern but considerations of the anthology in Jewish Literature from Biblical times through modernity. In a sense all the greatest works of Literature, including the source and center of them all, Tannach are anthologies.
These essays contain work by many of the most important Jewish scholars working today, from James Kugel to David Roskies.

Any book with a dedication that begins, "For everyone who loves antiques..." deserves a read by people in our circle. It's a great bunch of stories. I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm wondering if young people would enjoy this book as much as the older folks. Any thoughts on this?

Well, maybe -everyone- shouldn't own this book, but any self-respecting, rock-banging Anglo Saxonist would do well to have a look. And if you can't spring for the 85 clams they're asking, then have your university library order up a copy.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is both interesting and informative, as well as quite readable. Clearly a scholarly work, it stimulates though.

some of the seminal figures of German modernity - from Leibniz
onward - with uncompromising philosophical seriousness and
originality. The chapter on Benjamin and the paradisal epoche
is one of the few works in recent years to offer any new
insights on this immensely popular, but often superficially
discussed, figure. Also noteworthy is the daring interpretation
of Leibniz, expanded from an earlier version in MLN, which

constructs a rigorous theory of antonomasia, relating it to
central problems in the Classical and modern theory of language.

This book was written by 2 very successful graphic designers who own their own company in Chicago. The book will serve as a useful guide for young people who are considering a career in graphic design.
