Mark Twain and Medicine is an absolutely wonderful book. Not only is the story it tells entertaining, but the insight into the history of medicine and its relationship to our own health care system is informative and thought provoking. I found myself anticipating each chapter, wondering what the next new medical trend would be. I was alternately amused and amazed by this evolution. Do yourself a real favor and read this book. Then, do your physician a favor, and give her or him a copy. You will find yourself discussing and using what you learn as long as you deal with doctors.

Twain's articulate (and sometimes scathing) commentaries

Mark Twain And Medicine: "Any Mummery Will Cure" by K. Patrick Ober (Professor of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Education, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is an informative and scholarly survey and analysis of the famous and opinionated American author Mark Twain's views of and experiences with the medical profession. Twain's experiments with alternative care systems available in his era (partly due to his frustration with the shortcomings of traditional medicine), and Twain's articulate (and sometimes scathing) commentaries offer a unique perspective on the American medical industry of his day -- and still comes alive for contemporary readers who are keeping in mind how the author's life experience impacted his great works of literature. Highly recommended for in-depth American literature studies shelves, and particularly for those devoted to Twain's immortal literary classics, Mark Twain And Medicine is a welcome addition to academic and community library collections.

As a reading specialist, I'm always looking for ways to integrate quality children's literature into my content area lessons. When I read this book, I could not put it down! It is full of easy, practical lessons. These lessons encourage children to think, develop their own math strategies, and use writing or drawings to show how they solved mathematical problems. I liked this book so much, that I wrote a grant to purchase this book and the 21 trade books used for the lessons. I highly recommend this!

Every now and then you come across a little treasure, and that is exactly what this book is. Full of wonderful thoughts and delightful illustrations that just make you happy to be alive and in this world full of wonder. Yes, I am rhapsodizing, but it is seldom one finds something so charming and refreshing. It will do your soul good!

Thoughts from history's great poets and thinkers - arranged around the hours of the day - symbolize the stages of our lives. Whimsical, fearful, loving, and foolish, the Medieval people populating Denman's world are lovable because they are us. Great detail and imagination in her soft, perfect portraits. My thanks to illustrator Cherry Denman, from Edie De Avila

It's rare that a book written by a comp. lit. professor is so riveting, and even relevant to real life. "Monomania" has changed the way I understand other people, and reinforced my faith in the importance of literature.

A good glimpse of history for children
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-17
I thought that this book was a really good book. The best part about it was that it had to do with history. I think it will still keep the interest of kids while teaching them about what happened back then. It also had great pictures. While I was reading it, the pictures jumped out at me. It wasn't too lengthy either. I found that to be quite nice. I would recommend it to children if they are looking for an interesting and educational book. With this book, you can not only enjoy it, but you can also learn. That is why I gave it 5 stars.

An Attractive and Readable Book on the Pilgrims!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-21
The lush, romanticized illustrations--in the same tradition as Norman Rockwell--by renowned American artist N.C. Wyeth, are what first draws young readers to this book. While the paintings taken from Wyeth's murals may not always line up with the clear, concise writing of Robert San Souci, it doesn't detract from the narrative.

This is a classy book for middle grade students, providing a readable account of the Pilgrim's journey aboard the Mayflower and first year in New England. While the illustrations may be idealized, San Souci leaves no doubt that life was difficult for the settlers of Plymouth.

Notes at the end of the book provide interesting and helpful background on the writing of the book and information about the artist, who died in 1945, and the murals that are the source of these illustrations.

This is a nice addition for information on New England colonial life, as well as the feast of Thanksgiving.

A poetry of essential metaphor - the art of Borges Literature
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-09
This study was the first book- length one of Borges work in English. It was highly commended by Borges himself.
The author goes to the roots of Borges creative process, traces his aesthetic from his early days as poet and linguistic theorist through his creation of the 'Ficciones' for which he is most well- known.
At the heart of the Borges' doctrine is an idea of poetic concision, of creating works of essential metaphor without embellishments and decorations. The ideal of Borges is that the work should be stripped clear of verbiage and vagueness. The elaboration of this aesthetic leads to a discussion of how Borges' transformed his original ideas in time into great works of Literature.

Our family has the fortune of having Frank Finale as a teacher to both our children.

He has done a wonderful job capturing the Jersey Shore for all of its charms and the many artists who live here.

Everyone who visits the Jersey Shore will want this book

First, the editors of To the Shore Once should be congratulated. They chose 101 drawings, etchings, and paintings from local New Jersey and some national artists. These works of Art complement Mr. Frank Finale's writing in essays, prose and poetry. You, turn the page and you feel like you are at the beach in Spring Lake, Belmar or Manasquan. Even the carrousel of 1950s Asbury Park is represented. As I think of Frank O'Hara's book on Jackson Pollock, To The Shore Once More will become a classic coffee table book for years to come. Art and prose and poetry, what a nice mix. We have Mr. Frank Finale to thank for such a beautiful book this Summer

I will never get rid of this book, but will tell so many about it. This book helped me so much to persevere, and not compromise or give up. I so appreciate all her honesty. She really raised the bar for parents who do not want their kids living selfish lives without purpose. My husband and I both read this book. Of our eight children, 5 have read portions of the book. We have had great discussions together as a result.

Beverly brings a novelist's sensibility to literary and cultural criticism. An incisive, engaging read, and a timely one: in a day when fugitives from American-style justice capture the headlines, Beverly observes the importance of the fugitive figure to American culture at the dawn of the modern.

Once I started, I Could Not Put it Down
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.

I sat down to read a page or two and could not put the book down...On the Lam opens with the account of Robert Burns--a man sent to the chain gang for armed robbery of roughly ...--and his escape to Chicago where he founded a successful press. His landlady falls in love with him, finds out he's wanted in Georgia and blackmails him. When the Georgia officials find him in Illinois, they persuade him to return to finish his 10-year term in a matter of months. Once he returns, it's evident they plan to force him to serve the whole term. So he escapes *again* and makes a living selling his stories to detective magazines while on the lam. His novel is made into an academy award winning movie (I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang) starring Paul Muni; the movie exposed the cruelties on a chain gang and the resulting public outcry created drastic improvements of the system. And so begins this book's focus on a subject that has captivated America for years--the fugitive.

Beverly's discussion of the deadly and dangerous contest between Hoover's FBI and the Midwestern bandit John Dillinger is one of my favorite parts of the book.
