Kids REALLY Can!

Review Date: 2005-10-10
I teach Pre-Kindergarten and needed a special classroom project for our school auction. We purchased this book, some nice paper and acrylic paints and began making some of the animals in the book. They are so cute!

The book gives facts and fun projects to do for each animal to extend the children's learning. It also offers an "activity level" to portray the difficulty of each animal handprint. We tried all levels in our classroom and have been delighted with the results.

We made a collage of the animals and had it professionally mounted in a black bamboo frame and parents are already making plans about where to put in each of their homes. The bidding war should be fun! I highly recommend this book for teachers and parents and children who like to "get messy".

This book had many GREAT ideas for various animals. It was easy enough that, my almost 2 year old, and I together did a very nice piece of art. If you like to finger play, it is worth the purchase!

I had the honor to study under Winfried Nöth in Kassel/Germany and his handbook of semiotics was really helpful for my final oral exam in April 2008. This handbook is an excellent source for research on semiotics. It is comprehensible and covers practically all fields of semiotics, even topics like the semiotics of comics and films are analysed.

Great Book if you intend to study the basics of semiotics, it also gives you a lot of bibliography to research if you need more, something I really believe will not be the case.

Healing Ground is a book of grace and beauty. The exquisite photos show nature at her most sacred, and the lofty poems echo her spiritual perfection. Photo and poetry blend together so harmoniously they nurture both the inner and outer person. Healing Ground has touched me deeply.

I expect this book to be great, but where is it?

Great for a kids book

This book is very short and tells a story that kids could understand regarding the painter and the royal court he painted for. Each picture has a short story as well as a descriptive explanation of what items are in the picture. This would be a great way to teach kids that items are and still have it be fun because the faces are so silly. I highly recommend this book.

An Enthralling Examination of the Sophoclean Hero
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-10
Recently, I've read a fair number of books relating to Greek tragedy and of them all this is the best. In it Knox offers a profound and compelling examination of the nature of the heroes of Sophocles' plays. His arguments are persuasive, being based on a study of the actual words that occur and recur throughout the plays. Thus, there is quite a bit of ancient Greek quoted in the original; fortunately, it is all translated so that the argument can be easily followed by those who have no Greek.

Unlike most scholars, Knox writes beautifully. The English is unhampered by theoretical jargon -- there is no mention of hermeneutic circles, metatheatre, metanarratives, or
metapsychology. In an age when Martin Heidegger appears to be the model of style in scholastic writing, Knox's elegant
and clear writing makes for a refreshing change indeed.

Another refreshing change is that he treats Sophocles as though he were an ancient poet rather than as though he were an ancient structural anthropologist with an interest in depth psychology, something which is almost eccentric nowadays. Moreover, Knox's passion for Sophocles is palpable and infectious.

So, an excellent read. If you read only one book about Sophocles, this is the one I would recommend.

Excellent Introduction to Sophocles
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-12
First, a caveat: Knox very emphatically examines Sophocles on the basis of what Sophocles actually wrote. This has the virtue of accuracy and of keeping out fringe theorizing, but the vice of adding a modest Greek component. Knox always puts the Greek in a parenthetical (i.e., you'll never fail to understand a sentence because of the Greek), but there is a lot of it. If you don't know any Greek, this might encumber your reading somewhat.

Having said that, _The Heroic Temper_ is a fantastic little book. Knox spends two chapters discussing the "Sophoclean Hero" in terms of all seven surviving tragedies, showing that the same character types, the same narrative tropes and even very consistently the same vocabulary is used in all seven. He compares and contrasts Sophocles and Aeschylus (especially with respect to "Prometheus Bound") and analyzes the Sophoclean hero in terms of Sophocles' political context and religion.

This alone is eye-opening and ought to precede any reading of Sophocles, but Knox then goes on to discuss in greater detail "Antigone" (two chapters) and "Philoctetes" and "Oedipus at Colonus" (one chapter apiece). I wish I'd had this book in college -- it's worth more than all the lectures I heard on Greek tragedy.

The six chapters were in fact originally six lectures, and (Greek parentheticals aside) the book retains a verbal, even conversational tone. Well written, insightful, powerful -- the book is a winner.

This book is fascinating and remarkably useful. it`s great both for browsing and for reference. I`ve already bought and read two books I found described here and have added several more to my "to read" list. Hooked on Horror is worth the price for anyone who likes horror stories--not only is it enjoyable in itself, but it leads you to other reading within your areas of interest that you may never have known abou otherwise. I know that's true for me.

Darryl Jones and the Masses
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-01
Jones is clearly a master of his craft: Mummies, vampires, and monsters from Frankenstein to the diabolical Body Snatcher, Jones gives us an insight into the horror genre while briefly touching upon his personal experiences--most notably, an entire chapter devoted to the traumatizing experience of having to consume a small family of Asians off the coast of Beijing with his cousin while still a mere child. It is disturbingly clear that Jones is far superior to any of us in both intellect and stature; If you don't buy his book, chances are he will go searching for you and, most likely, eat you while you're sleeping. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is willing to look deeply into the black heart of both Jones and the Horror Industry.

A doctrine to Gods and Monsters

Review Date: 2004-05-15
Darryl Jones' book on the themes that horror has masqueraded in is a pleasure to read. Jones has a unique blend of all encompassing knowledge on the themes of Mad Science, Mary Shelly, Hammer Horror, Post Modern Horror, and the development of the vampire from Polidori, La Fanu and Stoker to Rice, Blade and The Lost Boys. Cannibalism also features in a chapter focusing on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Cannibal Holocaust entwined with a debate of censorship rampant in the horror world. Jones' unique writing style allows him some breadth of humour, first hand accounts and hindsight when discussing the cultural parallels of horror and modernity- how horror has associated itself with the chaos of culture and politics and the development of traditional horror motifs.

A book for those who wish to complete their knowledge on the purposes of horror, not only as a source of entertainment or psychological understanding of the human interest in base fears but in how the reaction to horror at specific moments in culture has backlashed or opened the debate of censorship, decency and how we interpret these terms. The book serves as an academic guide to horror and an indepth source for horror buffs alike. A humourous, well written read from a fantastic horror academic.

Wonderful way for elementary age children to learn about art

I was delighted by the scope of artists and artistic styles discussed in the book. It is difficult to find books that teach art (history) in a meaninglful way to children. The explanation of techniques used as well as the biographies of the artists were helpful and interesting. My 8 year old daughter has expressed some interest in art and she enjoyed the book. Using the "everyday" element of weather makes it easier for children to relate to as well. I hope there will be more books like this one.

I bought this for my 9 -1/2 y/o budding artist. She asked me one day how to draw a nose. So we went to the library and found this book among many other art books. It was a 'have-to-have'. It is perfect for 8y/o & older. Each aspect of the face(eyes, ears, etc...) is simply illustratrated across several pages. It also covers facial expressions, perpective, color, patterns and much more. What a find!

This book by Angela Gair is a small thesaurus for all those who want to be artists. Although not easy at first, this book guides you step-by-step to a successful design. Being an art student myself, I found this book not only very attractive to read, but also very helpful in my course. It may need time, patience and effort to achieve the desirable outcome, but I believe that in the end everyone will appreciate the value of this book.

I stopped my artistic development at stick figures and my children (ages 5 and 7) aren't much better. But, they want to draw different things. This series is great -- it is simple to follow and the results are great. I highly recommend this book as well as other books in the How to Draw series.
