Penguin is so adept at publishing comprehensive, but manageable, collections in forms that are portable, highly readable and easy to reference.

This collection is diverse and delves into the scientific, poetic and recreational components with elegance and authority.

A completely worthwhile work.

Dazzling survey of drug history, science, art and culture

I expected a handy reference tome and found something else - a breathtaking and compelling end-to-end read. Excerpts are short and threaded together in sections which raise the central questions about the relation of drugs to art, religion, science and society while illustrating them with an incredible range of perspectives from history and different cultures. I find most 'drug literature' rather boring but this anthology opens the subject out into new dimensions.

I use this book constantly and always find something 'new' to do with my students! It was written for every teacher! She really wants you to be the 'best of the best'!

Excellent teacher's tool for literature and arts infusion!

I discovered this book a few months ago and have been using excerpts to teach teachers how they can easily use the arts to support their literacy programs. Each section of the text has quick and easy ideas about ways to implement drama, music, art, and dance into the daily lessons of children grades K-6. National standards for the arts are summurized in each chapter along with "snapshots" of classrooms that implement these simple strategies. Resources are also provided so that arts activities may be tied to specific books for those readers that are unsure where to begin. The language of the book is easy to understand and follow, unlike many educational models that overwhelm the reader and bore the student. Since I have been using the text with my graduate teacher/students, I have been receiving positive comments about the fun ways to appeal to all learners. I highly recommend this text to classroom teachers, camp counselors, parents, and anyone who is tired of the traditional lecture learning style that is so often used in education today. I believe that if the reader practices the suggestions made in this text, they will reap the benefits of a robust and exciting learning environment.

Once again the Rabbi and the Priest do an excellent job with a most difficult subject.
This book is a must read for any young person who sees the world as a disturbing, evil place.
The authors put things in the right perspective and provide their uncanny insights as to how to overcome the fears of living in todays society.

This book is the best book on bestiary that I have read. Ron Baxton really uses his knowledge and reseach in the making of this book and it shows. The magnificant illistrations play an inportant part in the understanding and enjoyment of this book. Baxton uses a detailed description on the many differant animals and beasts that were believed to once roam this earth in the middle ages. This book I recommend to all people with the love of mystical creatures or even the love of animals.

Sensitivity and Brutality Combine For a Stunning Remembrance
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.

This review is hardly unbiased. The author, Morris Wysogrod, a commerical artist by trade, is my cousin and quite truly, a hero of mine. Whenever I visit my Cousin Morris' apartment, I am greeted as soon as I step off the elevator with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. His smile, unbreaking and his conversation, always scintillating, I am amazed at his sincerity and good nature despite what he has witnessed and experienced as a Holocaust survivor.

His warmth and love for his fellow man is evident throughout his memoir. Morris provides a vivid look at pre-war Poland and the lives that were stolen from our families. And, much as he greets his guests with genuine warmth and affection today, he treats each character in his book with similar respect and reverence.

His memory is outstanding as he remembers the many personalities and every day people of his Warsaw youth, and later in the death camps. His descriptions are detailed and he suceeds in bringing out the special qualities of each character. This is so important because more often than not, the people he describes with such affection will soon be dead at the hands of the Nazis. Much of Holocaust literature refers to the millions who were massacred. Morris didn't know the millions but he pays beautiful homage to the hundreds who crossed his path.

From homage to carnage, Morris's story takes us into the Nazi occupation and his incarceration in several death camps. Similar to his skills in painting a picture of his pre-war youth, he is equally and shockingly vivid in his memories of the camps. The brutality, anguish, and sheer inhumanity he witnessed is brought to life as only a man of his artistic talents can do.

And in the midst of the brutality, there is the friendships, the shared moments, and the appreciation for his fellow prisoners that is necessary for the reader to grasp onto so that he or she may continue with the chilling chronicle of Morris' survival.

A Brush With Death has warmth, beauty and brutality. It is one of the many stories of the Holocaust experience, and one which I am confident will provide a unique perspective to the most horrific period in recorded history.

As a fellow survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Budzyn concentration camp, I can attest the accuracy of the author's harrowing descriptions of his experiences.

I am amazed at the author's ability to recall so many details. He writes from the heart, without artifice. His spare drawings provide haunting illustrations of what words can't always describe on their own.

Read this book. You will be moved.

Finally, a children's art book that is printed well. Most kids art books are printed on cheap paper and full of cartoons. They miss the point. Visual Art is all about the nuances of color and light. That means glossy paper and good print job. This book goes beyond that - it is bound on carboard with smudge proof coatings. Perfect for small hands.

Important! Kids need to be exposed to art before they enter the verbal world of school where visual skills and gifts are not only ignored - they are punished. Open their hearts to the emotion and freedom of visual expression early, and keep it up despite the verbal limitations of public school. Your visual kids need it for their soul as well as their creativity. And, even though the schools don't know it, or forgot it, kids exposed to art will do better in all other disciplines. For the kind of perfected art in these books is the result of hard work and self discipline as well as skill, inspiration and creativity.
