Ric Estrada, who illustrated this book, has come up with some wonderfully imaginative characters that show the younger reader the basics of drawing a cartoon character. Mr. Estrada, a forty year veteran of comic books and animation, shows how the building blocks of solid design are formed from the simplest of shapes. Not only is this a great learning tool, but the names and commentary inside are quite entertaining as well. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book for a younger friend who likes to drawstange creatures. I used to teach art to children and used a number ofthe Lee Ames books in my classes which were always a big hit. I noticed that not all children can follow the visual step-by-step instructions but those that did usually had a great time and good results. This books seems to be of the same quality as the other Lee Ames books I've purchased.

Believe it or not children's drawings end up looking much like Ed Emberley's. Line by line and shape by shape the Halloween related objects take form. Our other family favorite was Emberley's "Big Red Drawing Book". Absolutely love these books!

All of Emberley's books are wonderful. The Big Orange Drawing book specializes in things that are orange so a lot of it is Halloween themed. I loved working through these books as a child and still have some of the Halloween decorations I made from this book.

I am a 21 year-old artist. I forgot all about Ed Emberley until a couple of weeks ago. Emberley was my first artistic inspiration and I developed an interest in art through the direction of his variety of juvenile instructional books. I highly recommend these books to any children who express an interest in art. His series of books are EXTREMELY simply to understand and children at any age can grasp his artistic expertise.

This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! These are a great first step. All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). Famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step, what appears to be a complex Haunted House, but it is simple when you do it his way. This book includes a number of fun ideas including robots, tiger, military ships, Halloween holiday drawings, and more. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book, because I am partial to the pirate ship instructions.

If you want to move up from here and learn the terminology of what you are doing, and really become an accomplished artist, the next step after these are the terrific books by "Jack Hamm".

If you just want to have some fun, get this book!

From Rags to Riches is an enormously entertaining and absorbing study of the history of girls' clothing from early Colonial America to today. Lavish illustrations include European and American paintings, drawings and an outstanding collection of photographs that are sometimes startling in their ability to reveal attitudes and emotions. A picture of five child mill workers is especially touching.

Changing fashions mirror the conditions of women's lives. The fact that this new freedom in clothing choices was sometimes at the expense of other women's lives in that clothing's manufacture is explained in an outstanding section outlining the horrors of sweatshops, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the struggle to unionize workers.

Readers are also empowered by links to organizations that aim to prevent such horrors now and in the future. An extensive glossary, bibliography, webography, and list of museums all contribute to make this absolutely one of the most eye-opening books on the subject for children and adults.

If fashion history is one of your passions, From Rags to Riches by Leslie Sills is a must for your book shelf.

FROM RAGS TO RICHES is a nonfiction guide to the history of girl's fashion from Colonial times (1600's) to present day. Attractive layout and generous use of both colored and black and white photographs and illustrations, add readability to the well-researched text. Arranged chronologically, FROM RAGS TO RICHES consists of twelve chapters ranging from two to four pages in length. For example, "Bustles and Ruffles: Stylish Girls of the Late Nineteenth Century" is three pages in length and contains seven illustrations (both photographs and sketches). In addition to illustrations, FROM RAGS TO RICHES contains sidebars for many (if not all) of its chapters. Italicized words in the text are words defined in the glossary. Bustle for example is defined as "a cotton pad mounted on a steel or cane frame, then attached by hooks or laces to a waistband under a skirt." Bibliography and webography are included as are listings of museum and organizations.

This has been the first book of Leslie's I have read and I love it. Once I got it, I ran straight home to read it. I always saw previews when I went over her house for art class, but never gotten to read the thoughtful writing that's in it. The book is about girl's clothing from the early 1600's to the present. Me being a girl of 14 and having a passion for fashion, the book really gave me a history point of view of clothing that I would never get anywhere else! So please get the book, read it and be inspired becuase once you've finished, you'll never be able to wear the same clothes.

This is the fourth book by Leslie Sills, a Boston area artist and art teacher. Her books are about women artists (painters, sculptors, photographers,to name a few) and are intended for middle school aged children. As a parent of an 11 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, I own and have read all four books and enjoyed them greatly. I have given many as gifts to kids, teachers and parents. From Rags to Riches is gourgeously designed, thoughtfully written and thoroughly researched. It is full of fascinating photographs and history; Leslie Sill's most recent book reflects an understanding of the complex social, economic and cultural factors that influence fashion, art and asthetics.

I borrowed this book and read it back when I was a coming-of-age sixth grade girl. I had just gotten my period, was growing breasts, and was interested in boys for the first time. It helped clear up so many issues I was having, and all in all was a great read. Reccommended for any girl/woman over the age of 9, because it tends to get a little detailed. Anyway...ladies...from one to another...GO READ IT!

It's a great book that will make you confident like I have.

This book is a great book for any woman or girl from ages 9-16. It helps raise self-esteem and is a fun book to read aloud to a daughter. Andrea Johnston did a wonderful job of getting out the main theme with having some fun as well. Ms. Johnston and Gloria Stienem have created and published a wonderfully powerful book. The book is a great book for a teenage girl to read.

Excellent book for girls aged 9 to 18 and adult women. The heartwarming, poignant, and sometimes sad stories and poems by the girls help girls maintain or revive their true selves which are often lost during these years. A helpful book for developing girl's self-esteem and maintaining positive feelings about herself. Girls are celebrated for who they are, not what they look like or what they wear. Girl's voices are those of a wide range of ethnicities.

This book is an exciting, and suspense thrilling book. I may only be 13, but I people think i don't uynderstand the meaning of a book. Lois Lowry did a very good job telling my eighth grade class about this new mysterious world. She expressed the feelings of each character very nicely. If anyone would say otherwise, I would wonder why they think that.
It is true that it is a sad book, but it kept me in suspense and I like that in my reading. My class was very surprised about the ending and about how they released people, in fact I was deeply saddened by the way they release. I was touched by the thought that Jonas, the young Six, Gabriel, and The Giver were the only ones with pale eyes.
If anyone would like to know more aboiut this book,I recomend reading it. I will read it again even though I have just finished today. It was a great book, Lois Lowry if you are reading this review, I will tell you right now that it was a painful, joyful, hateful, great book. I have to admit, while I was reading this book in class, my teacher would stop reading at the best parts, so I was little upset about that, but I finally got to the end and it was wonderful. All my thanks to Lois Lowry for her book.
Dear Lois Lowry,
If you are reading this please consider writing a sequel to this book. I would be greatful to find out what happens next to Jona and little Gabe. If you decide not to write a sequel please contact me somehow, I would be greatful to hear from you too. well that is all for now.

The story was about a boy named Brian, who was trying to survive in the wilderness. One summer, Brian flew to Canada to visit his father. The pilot had a heart attack and died. Brian had to fly the plane. He flew into water and was hurt very badly. The only things he had were the clothes he had on, money, and a hatchet. Now he has to try to survive with the things he has. I liked the book because it was exciting and it had a lot of aciton. My favorite part was when Brian went into the plane to get the first aid kit. I think you should read it because it is about a boy who is trying to survive alone in the wilderness.

This is a great book about survival and courage

Heroines: The Lives Of Great Literary Characters And What They Have To Teach Us by Mary Riso offers a close and articulate reading of great heroines from literary classics, including Natasha in "War And Peace"; Jane in "Jane Eyre"; Mary in "The Secret Garden"; Lucie in "A Tale Of Two Cities"; and others. Recommended as a vivid, erudite, and exquisitely presented literary study, Heroines is a welcome addition to Women's Studies and Literary Studies supplemental reading lists.

Heroines have much to Teach Us

Review Date: 2003-08-18
Riso does an excellent job of summarizing the plots of several classic books and delineating the characters of the heroines therein. She shows that classic literature is not just meant to be read in order to write a paper for school or for our own reading pleasure; literature can also introduce us to heroines who can teach us many valuable lessons about life. Although the circumstances of our modern lives differ in many ways from theirs, we can still learn to be cheerfully courageous in the face of difficult circumstances, like Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, or to encourage others to live more sacrificial lives, like Lucie in Tale of Two Cities. Our circumstances may be different but the qualities needed to confront modern life are the same as the character qualities needed 100 or 200 years ago.

More than literary characters

At first glance, this book may seem to focus on the literary characters mentioned. On reading however, it quickly becomes clear that the author's focus is the virtues which make up a godly character in anyone. The literary characters are a clever way to illustrate the author's point, using someone every reader knows or may know.

Very insightful and inspiring!

For some Christians, though this idea is less dominant lately, the Bible is the one book they need to read. However, many of us do read other books, and there are things to learn from them that mirror Biblical truths.

***** Mary Riso explores this in her book, HEROINES. Using characters familiar to those students of classic literature, such as CS Lewis, the Brontes, the SECRET GARDEN, and some less familiar, she draws out the morals to be learned from the women featured in these novels. Many of these books are ones that have been regulated to childhood, but though unstated, she makes the point that Jesus made, that we are to come as children, thus, reading from "children's " literature might help us to do this. This is not a book for "chicks" alone, but also for men, for anyone who wants to discover the treasures to be found on dusty library shelves. *****
