a beautiful book for older children

This is a quite beautiful book made with high quality materials and containing many lovely color illustrations. The six stories included in this compilation are: The Memoirs of a London Doll by Mrs. Fairstar (1846), The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Anderson (1838), Ruth Ainsworth's Rag Bag, a Baba Yaga tale, Laurence Housman's Rocking Horse Land (1894), and The Town in the Library by E. Nesbit.

Each story is preceded by a paragraph of introduction about the author and the story, and the pictures by Angela Barrett are superb. These tales are a bit lengthy and too intense for young children, but just the thing for the more mature young reader. This would make a lovely and special gift.

"Rooke's Island: The Prophesy of the Staring Eyes" is a book about a lady named Adelaine Margery Josephine Ida Hilda-Ann Mutters. She has just gotten a letter and the letter says that her uncle just died and left everything he owned to her. The letter says that she should go to Alwyns Village. There she meets the owner of the local inn, named Gabriella Mooleys. In Alwyns Village Margery meets her uncle's lawyer Sidney Snog and goes with her cousin Mike to Rooke's Island. Once they get there, they find out about lower Earth, a series of tunnels beneath the ground and inner Earth, the center of the world. They find themselves in the middle of a prophesy.

Full of suspense. A mystery. . .

I enjoyed "Rooke's Island: The Prophesy of the Staring Eyes" very much and think it is appropriate for ages 8 and up.

This series is perfect for any little girl (especially ages 4-8). My daughter is age 5 and we have read the whole series!! It usually takes us about 4-5 nights of bedtime reading to complete one of these small chapter books. Would be great for a young girl to read on her own as well. These make a great gift! That's actually how we acquired our first one... now we are hooked!

Jataka/Buddhist classic - great illustrations

Alot of Jataka stories for children have really second rate illustrations; they are just not inspiring. This one is a first class retelling of a Jataka/Buddhist classic, with really lovely illustrations to match the fantastic story. Basically, the moral lesson of the story (indicative of all Jataka stories) is that you should use your reason and decide things for yourself, rather than just doing or believing something because others say so. I was not blown away by this book (partly because there is alot of US spelling, which is a bit off-putting for my Aussie-English tastes) but I do think it is one of the few children's Dharma books (that I have seen) actually worth having. Suitable for age 2-8

This re-telling of the classic tale is absolutely stunning in its illustrations. The storyline definately needs explaining to small children. My 3 year old son wanted to know why the small man could take the Queen's baby away. Of course, Rumpelstilskin never actually takes the baby because the Queen learns his name. However, the premise of the story is unsettling to small kids. Nevertheless, I would not go overboard with political correctness as the story is a classic and so long as you explain the story, your children should enjoy it. I also recommend Mr. Galdone's other books as his illustrations are absolutely wonderful!

As a native russian who spent her childhood reading a lot of folk tales I can tell that this book is very good translation of some of the tales. Author gives some information about background of Russian folk mythology and culture which is very helpfull for non-russian reader to understand the tales and russian culture in general. Love the poety of translation and beautiful ilustrations! My american husband enjoyed it very much! Would reccomend for kids to read.
