Grammar and literature

Grammar is always a difficult and arid subject when somebody is not a lover of grammar. And they are really few. This book is a beatiful solution to teach spanish as a foreingn language or simply as a self-study book. Allende is always fresh in her writing. As a chilean woman and a citizen of the world she knows how to translate her feelings, thoughts and her own experience into words. In addition to her beautiful style is another important matter. The fact that the readers of this book are going to learn a rich spanish that blows between the Pacific Ocean and the Mountains. A spanish that have american motivations, which are, by the way, very well undestood by Isabel Allende. "Un cuento de Isabel Allende es un cuento con olor a fruta". "A story from Isabel Allende is a story that smell like fruits". The evil and the angels of the chilean culture. She knows them well. People who want to learn a good spanish do it because they want to read our writers. Neruda, Mistral, Allende, they live already in the hearts of books lovers. So, we should not separate spanish grammar from spanish literature.

This is a small informative book about many great projects made out of mud. I have not tried the projects yet but am planning on getting my hands in some clay soil very soon. The descriptions, instructions and pictures are clear and easy to follow.

Look Who's Digitizing

Computers are everywhere because they meet business and government needs. Someday they probably can meet such humanities research needs as refereeing different ways of interpreting literature. In the meantime scholars need to become better at computers and statistics so they can direct computers to answer the questions in the humanities that researchers want asked.

At this point computers help scholars with on-line concordances, elementary patterns, and word counts. But THE DIGITAL WORD: TEXT-BASED COMPUTING IN THE HUMANITIES also shows what computers can do with interpreting Offred's character in Margaret Atwood's HANDMAID'S TALE, critical editions of Geoffrey Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES and William Langland's PIERS PLOWMAN, Samuel Coleridge's THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, James Joyce's ULYSSES, THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, and the planned 350,000 alphanumeric or bitmap digitized Bibliotheque de France national heritage library project with 300 reading stations for corporate suppliers, professional readers and researchers to access, store and work with animated and still images, sounds, and texts. So I hope editors George P. Landow and Paul Delany regularly publish more updates to this riveting followup to the earlier HYPERMEDIA AND LITERARY STUDIES.

A Fun Read

Review Date: 2002-06-27
For those who like good story telling, this is a good bet, as are the other books this author has published about mythology. His writing style is colorful fluid, and often dramatic. He has found some fasinating myths from around the world in each book. Children will like this and the other books, and adults can enjoy them too.

finding the Golden Fleece

Here is still another fine collection of retellings of ancient myths for young people by historian Don Nardo. The rousing tale of the attempt to find the Golden Fleece (by the Greek hero Jason) is only one of many that come to life in a dramatic way. Look for his other mythology books and you won't be disappointed.

Not like most college textbooks
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-16
I'm currently a student and i'm taking an Introducion to Archaeology course because I've always been interested in learning a little bit about archaeology. This is the book that I have to use for my class and most of the time I dread having to read the books in any of my classes, but this book is an exception. Even if I wasn't taking the course in college, I would enjoy reading this book.

It gives you an overview of what archaeologists do for a living and tells of many excavations and other archaeological discoveries. Unlike most textbooks, it not only gives definitions and gives information about the subject, but it tells stories that will interest you and actually make you want to read the book for a change.

If you want to read about what archaeology is about, I recommend reading this book. It has a lot of good information and it's interesting.

Magical Realism Meets Postmodernism
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-29
Chace relies on Wendy Faris's remarkably constructive "Scheherazade's Children: Magical Realism and Postmodern Fiction" (from Magical Realism: Theory, History, Community) to show how Jäntti's novel meets all five of the primary characteristics of magical realism: an irreducible element of magic, detailed descriptions of a realistic world, contradictory understandings of events, the near merging of two worlds or realms, and a questions of received ideas of time, space, and identity. Jäntti's novel is not exactly what I picture when I think about the kinder, gentler magical realism I'm familiar with from stories like Like Water for Chocolate. Instead it's a gritty, often gross, romp through a posthuman landscape. Chace analyzes Jäntti's use of narratological techniques to show how amorphous the narrative is in the text. The article contains lots of quotes from the text to support her claims and is remarkably easy to understand and follow for an academic article. Great work! Now if only the novel were available in English translation!

A very good book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1997-06-15
This book turned out to be just what I was looking for. I have read many books for divorced fathers, but this book goes well beyond explaining the reasons why fathers get divorced. It deals with issues relating to how to cope, how to plan your future, etc. I found this book here online after searching quite a long time, because I've been told from our local bookseller (who could not get me a copy quickly enough) that the limited runs sell out fast. I believe that it is well worth the wait
