My Preschoolers enjoy singing along with the CD and "reading" the poem as they sing. They take the poem home and sing it to their parents. I have also put a set of mini poem books in my reading center for the students to enyoy.

I love this book (I bought the whole series). My class enjoys listening to and singing along with the CD. I make a class sized book by enlarging the pictures and putting the book together in a binder. We practice every day with the CD. Then on Friday, I give each child their own child-sized book and we practice with the CD. Then I send the book home with the children. I've gotten so much positive feedback--parents love it!
The children also tell me how much they enjoy the books, and we have review days where they can choose their favorites.

Best technical writing book ever.

I've seen a lot of (technical) writing books and most of them are just crap. You don't need a 50-page chapter to teach you how to put citations in your paper. You don't need double spaced text as if you are an elementary school student.

But this book is different. It help you focus on your your article/report/book at any level you desire from the overall organization to the proper selection of words. It gives you sophisticated advice that is actually useful and time tested.

I am an engineer, and I have used this book when writing my masters and PhD theses and a number of paper. I have used it when I wrote a patent application. My wife is a social scientist and she uses it for writing her thesis.

I have been using this book for about 10 years now, and I assure you it will improve your writing at every level. This book should be number one seller in its category.

I bought this book by chance. But, I realized no other books cannot be compared with this book. other books say how I could rearrange the layout and order of my documents. This book teaches how I should write the sentences and paragraphs and the sections in scientific fields. This is very useful for nonnative speakers of english especially!

It is an excellent book for students from all disciplines
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-18
Technical writing is essential for all university students because if they can write efficiently and express themselves well and precisely, it will be easier for them to relay their ideas to others and hence find jobs easily, write well balanced reports, and more importantly perhaps know what they are writng and talking about. The more organozed one's speech or writing is, the more effective one will be. Non-native speakers of English, however, do not think oral and written communication is that important but once they use this book in an English class under the guidance of their teachers, they ABSOLUTELY CHANGE THEIR IDEAS I recommend this book to all teachers of English teaching English at freshman or sophomore level.

A very good book

I've used a couple of versions of Cohen for 8 years in high school classrooms. (IMHO, much of it isn't freshman and sophomore-friendly.) I personally turn to it often, as well. I have nothing but the highest regard for Cohen's work here. He manages to combine general aesthetic issues with historical detail and current theatrical practices. His enthusiasm is palpable. The "digest" versions of selected plays combine meaty chunks of text with synopses and terrific illustrations. This book energetically avoids a textbook-y tone. (Heads up: I have not seen the latest edition.)

German Romanticism melds into Western Marxism
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-29
In this pre-marxist work of the Young Lukács, he takes advantege of the German Romantic myth of the Homeric epic as the hallmark of a supposedly "unalienated" civilization, where the individual was his envinronment and had no need to develop the kind of alienated, subjective self-consciousness we find in the bourgeois XIXth Century novel. Of course this is a modern myth, based on a very selective reading of Homer's epic - which already betrayed a clear consciousness of the divide existing between the Human and the Divine, as well as of a further divide between the mythical Heroic age and the everyday realities of an archaic class society. Neverthless, this modern myth came to form the core of Lukács' lifelong research programme - the study of alienation, which came to form much of the best research of Western Marxism (after reading Lukács'work one can not imagine Adorno and Horkheimer's _Dialectic of the Enlightnment_ being written without Lukács' starting stone). A must-read, therefore, for anyone interested in Western Marxism in general, as well as Lukács and the Frankfurt School in particular.

The epic and the novel

The "Theory of the Novel" (1916) is the major work of Lukacs' pre-Marxist period. It is extremely useful both as a kind of document of the feverish intellectual atmosphere of pre-WW I Europe and as one of the underground classics (together with his "History and Class Consciousness" (1923)) that influenced what was later to become the Western Marxism of the Frankfurt School. Lukacs' pre-Marxist prose style, comparable to that of his friend Ernst Bloch's, may seem excessively romantic at times but the overall effect is that theory seems to come alive as the expression of a living human being undergoing an intense personal crisis. The first part of the book discusses the rise of the crisis of interpretation that is represented by the novel as a literary form when it is placed in contrast to the fullness of meaning perceivable in the earlier epic, the form which the novel presumably replaced. Lukacs' discussion of the fundamental dichotomy tearing apart at European civilization from within parallels kindred works such as Nietszches' "The Birth of Tragedy" (with its Apollonian/Dionysian schema) and Toennies' classic work of sociology "Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft." Also instructive to the student of literature would be a comparison of Lukacs' model with that of Auerbach's "Mimesis" and Bakhtin's contrast of the epic and the novel. The second part of this book is an application of this binaristic framework to novels by Cervantes, Balzac, Flaubert, Goethe, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. While this whole second part is incredibly rich in insights, Lukacs' application of the Bergsonian notion of time as duree to his study of Flaubert's "L'Education sentimentale" is particularly unforgettable. There, he writes: "Time is the resistance of the organic."

Now in a fully updated and expanded sixth edition, This Land Was Theirs: A Study Of Native Americans examines the traditional and contemporary lifeways of twelve North American native tribes ranging from the subarctic Chipewyan to the Natchez of Mississippi. Each tribe represents a major culture area and socioeconomic spectrum. Of particular note is a global discussion of contemporary Native American issues, with each chapter's updates being based on the authors' extensive personal visits to each extant group discussed. New for this sixth edition is a chapter on the Yurok of California. A highly recommended addition to Native American Studies reading lists, This Land Was Theirs is enhanced with a glossary and pronunciation guide.

This unique story of a man's integrity and honesty incorporates the evident innocence that one black man has. In the face of a bias trial he is unfairly found guilty of a crime he clearly did not commit. The racial discrimination uncovered in this book is unjust and is still being debated around the world as many people think these human beings aren't equal.

The book is written by Harper Lee and is set in the time where the whites dominated the blacks. The books setting is in Maycomb society where by the Finch's family is introduced. The book is narrated by Scout Finch, who views the novel from an adult perspective. She is faced with the decision of accepting the blacks as individuals and not by the colour of their skin, so she and her brother Jem, are seen in the novel as being colour-blind. Her father, Atticus Finch, was chosen to defend a black man Tom Robinson at the trail, for being accused of rapping Mayella Ewell. The Ewells were seen as the 'white trash' in Maycomb but even though they were at the bottom of the social ladder they still had more power over the black folks. The book started out introducing the Finch's and the ideas of getting Boo Radley out of his house, here Dill, Jem and Scouts friend, uses a ridiculous dare for Jem to do as to make Boo come out. It is later they realize that Boo, is really a nice person and is seen as a 'motif' for being accused of things he didn't do and turns out helping the children. For instanced, he mended Jem's pants and placed a blanket over Scout. Miss Caroline Fisher, Scouts teacher, is one that didn't understood the state of proverty and racism in the society of Maycomb, so she offers to help people, like Walter Cunningham, giving them money and refused to see why he couldn't accept it. The Cunninghams didnt take money from people unless they know that they were able to repay the person but with Atticus they gave him back items and he would accept their gratitude. Aunt Alexandra did not share the same view as Atticus, her brother, so in a nut shell, she didnt want a change for the better instead she liked the fact that the whites were dominant. Calpurnia, the black helper, made Scout and Jem realize the concept in Maycomb that big or small respect was always due to the whites. This is shown in the church scene when the men took off their hats as they entered the church. Another instance of respect for the whites is the seating in the trail and the fact that Bob Ewell won the trail although it was evident that Tom did not rape Mayella. As a result from the trail, Bob spat in Atticus' face because Atticus brought out his behaviour, of ill-treatment to Mayella, in the courtroom. Love and Family relationship is evident in this book since Atticus sits down with his children and explains to them that people are equal no matter the colour of their skin. His conversation is effective to the children since Scout did not retaliate when she was told that her father was a 'nigger lover' at school, she realizes that fighting back doesn not make things right. All and all, althougth the trail with Tom Robinson resulted in his death. The black community were grateful for Atticus defending Tom and sent him food to show their gratide. The trail resulted as there being hope for Maycomb,u nity was now shown amoung the blacks and people had change of hearts, like Aunt Alexandra.

This is a text book for my Science, Math, and Literacy class. It is really great and a must have. I took this to work with me and everyone wants one. I have to share it and I'm the one with homework! lol. We are implementing 3 activities next week. All these activites lead to language development. I like how a lot of the tasks get the children to cross the midline. What I like most is that it tells and shows you how to set up the activities so that a child that hasn't decided on which hand they like to use can choose for himself. If you set tools on the right side, the child will naturally pick it up with their right hand. If you set them on top then the child will have to think about which hand to use.

This book is long overdue!

At last not only a "workbook" for the early childhood professional but one that parents can share with their children. Great learning tools with everyday items found around the house. I saw Dr. Folds on the Health Network several years ago and it is about time she shared her endless well of ideas with early childhood pros and parents.
