I saw the exhibit of these photograghs at Grand Central Station when I was in NYC. The pictures were beautiful, and you could truly see the humanity in the eyes of the people photographed. The photographers really captured the spirit of the people in these pictures. I was so moved just looking at the pictures. If you love photography you will love this book.

The world of the Young Hegelians

This is still one of the most interesting treatments of the development of German classical philosophy from Hegel to Marx via the world of the Young Hegelians in the generation after the death of Hegel up to the revolutions of 1848. The string of remarkable figures, Strauss, Bauer, Ruge, Stirner, Hess, and Feuerbach, with whom Marx interacted needs a careful account from someone like Hook, although there have been a number of more recent accounts.

Sidney Hook analyzes the two philosophers utilizing opposition among Hegelian and Marxist theory: ethical idealism, dialectics, and continuity. This allows the reader to adopt the differences between the two influential authors, thereby introducing major theories written by Marx and Hegel. The remaining chapters interject comparisons between Karl Marx and esteemed German philosophers who studied Hegel, contributed or correlated with Marxist philosophy. Overall, the text forms an essential basis to the understanding and development of Marxist philosophy, and the struggles of a young-Hegelian in the nineteenth century.

A Medium's Autobiography
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-28
This is a fascinating autobiography by a very successful medium. The most interesting part is her gripping account of some of her sittings, which she does without revealing the names or whereabouts of her clients. From her mindboggling and yet very touching experiences, one feels transported into the world of spirits. There is no doubting her descriptions. Her language has an easy flow and a personal touch that quite inspires one to read more and go higher into mediumship. A consistently inspiring book and a must read for mediums or psychics who wish to know how to handle their clients or write about them, the best way that could be done.

Another cool ghost book!

I bought this book because I was so impressed with James Houran's other text on ghosts ("Hauntings & Poltergeists: Multidisciplinary Perspectives"). This book also is for people with intellect, but it was an over all fun read (some chapters can get a little hard to follow if you don't have a background in psychology). I especially loved the chapter on Internet ghost hunters! That was the first academic examination of these groups that I've ever read, and it was fascinating. No hype in this book; just serious writings that will hold your attention.

Ghost hunters are more interesting than ghosts!

This collection of academic chapters addresses the different psychological and sociological motivations people have had (and have today) for searching for ghosts and evidence of life hereafter. According to the general premise of the book, the search arguably started with shamanism and continues to this day in the guise of self-styled ghost hunting groups everyone has heard of on the Internet. However, readers will also be treated to analyses on the psychology of believing in and experiencing ghosts, the functions of children's ghost stories, and the influence of science and religion on how societies conceptualized and attempted to interact with "spirits." The contributors are well respected authorities that hail from various disciplines: psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, and parapsychology. This is fun and stimulating reading that goes beyond the formula that has been way overdone and sensationalized in recent years -- namely, serving the public collections of "true" ghost stories and "real life" ghost investigations. Highly recommended!

God's Light and Universal Principles

Review Date: 2008-05-01
Would you want to know if the way to transform our troubled world were--finally, really--at hand? If so, this book is for you. Read about a new spiritual practice and a fresh explanation of divine principles leading humanity toward a new, God-centered civilization--which will harmoniously combine materialism and spirituality. The belief that God is Light is found in many traditional religions. Incredibly, in this book we learn that God's Light is now available to all of us through a new spiritual practice. Practitioners radiate God's Light from the hand, purifying people, other living things, places, or objects. This powerful Light purifies on the spiritual level, and also causes changes in our physical world (e.g., individuals' physical/emotional condition). People's very souls are purified--so, no wonder that the world is on the threshold of major change. Hope for a bright future returns! Dr. Sidney Chang (editor) has written an easily understood 150-page introduction to Sukyo Mahikari. This book will transform our world, and lead its readers to greater health, harmony, and prosperity.

Stephen Cary has written a wonderful book for teachers of English Learners as well as for native English Speakers in the process of expanding their language.

Cary's years of teaching and learning language acquisition theory and practice as well as his love of children and wonderful sense of humor have helped to create a terrific teaching aid. New and experienced teachers will find a great deal to inspire and encourage them. The book is full of real teaching experience. I have seen him teach and the students are instantly responsive and engaged, while being immersed in using rich language. He is an inspiring teacher and his experiences and humor have created an inspiring and easily accessible book. It is practical and easy to use. You too, will love this book!

DON'T THINK TWICE! WHAT AN EXCELLENT TOOL FOR MOTIVATION!!

Herein lies a teacher's dream! A must read for anyone interested in increasing motivation in his/her students! Teachers love to get simple ideas to apply to class TOMORROW! This book sports teacher-friendly pertinent theory and tons of hands-on examples of how to use a very untapped resource and tool for motivation that demystifies reading and writing for students.

Stephen Cary's extensive background and interest in comics, his theoretical background in language education, and his experience with students and teachers who have used comics will assist teachers in accessing a "new" resource to utilize with all students, and especially linguistically diverse students. Whether it is to teach first or second (or third, etc.) language, young children or adults, the author's irresistible down-to-earth writing style and humor will make teachers laugh, address their realistic concerns about using a new resource, and provide them with relevant pictures, quotes, and anecdotes from fellow teachers and students who have used comics in the classroom! It will also give them an extensive list of resources to put this fabulous tool into practice. I give it a two thumbs up!

Reveals the grit, glory, and pain that made California.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1997-11-20
Growing up in California you are taught that the future is always gold . "Gold Rush: A Literary Exploration," edited by Michael Kowalewski, pulls back the curtains on perhaps the most important event in the Golden State's history to reveal a place filled with dreams, nightmares, courage and cowardness. A place that became America's future.

Published by Heyday Books and the California Council for the Humanities, "Gold Rush" is 500 pages of short selections (1-8 pages) that lend insight to the California and American character. Writing includes: poems from Robert Frost, Gary Snyder and Wendy Rose; journal entries from William T. Sherman and John Muir; and essays from Thoureau, Dame Shirley, and Emerson.

On the eave of California's 150 anniversary of the discovery of gold (January 24, 1848), this book is a great read for anyone curious about how California shaped America.

California considered

150 years later, we in California are still struggling to understand the legacies of the Gold Rush. How much of California's present "character" can be traced to the tumultous 1850s? GOLD RUSH: A LITERARY EXPLORATION attempts to answer this question from two directions: first, by examining the diaries, letters, and journals of the 49ers who actually participated in the rush, and second, though the generations of later writers who have re-interpreted the Gold Rush again and again. The book's many short selections and splendid illustrations provide many access points; though sometimes old, the accounts are never dull. At turns humorous, chilling, and thought-provoking, GOLD RUSH is a compelling read for any Californian interested in the state's roots.

My homeschooled daughter really likes this book (she's in 2nd grade). When we received it, she did 20 pages in one sitting. I had to ask her to save some pages for later :) It states a rule, then has a few pages of different activities for each rule. For homeschooled kid, you can do more per day. For kid that attends a public school, the activities on each page are short enough to be enjoyable. This book came with CD that has a pdf file of this whole book, so you can redo some lessons by printing them later again.

I love this book. It has a section that explains the grammar/punctuation rule, then a number of pages to reinforce the lesson. The examples are quite clear and the rules broken down into the basics. Great for us homeschoolers and terrific for traditional students who just want reinforcement or review.
