"The poet fulfills himself as he sees his imagination
become the light in the minds of others."
-- Wallace Stevens (1879-1955)
"And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night."
-- Matthew Arnold (excerpt from "Dover Beach")
Today, in a world, much akin to that described by the 19th century poet Matthew Arnold, there has appeared an artistic and intellectual bellwether[i], who (expressing himself in both poetic and visual media) is shedding his personal light on our confused world. This artist, Dom Martin, takes a less than optimistic view of human behavior, both past and present.
Dom Martin's earlier book of illustrated poetry, Exodus to Eternity, published in the millennium year 2002, explored in fascinating ways, man's inhumanity towards his fellowmen. His present volume, which echoes the first, CoEXISTENCE: Humanity's Wailing Wall, is a collection of some 77 poems. The pages are graced by the poet-artist's unique and often-startling pencil drawings, which remind one of the agonies expressed in Pablo Picasso's famous painting, "Guernica". In this second book, he explores man's changing relationship both to his fellowmen and with an often disappointing, `hands-off' God. Obviously troubled by the continuing morass in the Middle East, Dom Martin's poem, "The Prophet", speaks directly to Lebanon's recent devastation at the hands of Israel, while "The Palestinian Wailing Wall" and "The Siege of Gaza" echo the despair of a long-oppressed people. In "A Thousand Eyes for an Eye", the poet decries the ongoing occupation of Iraq.
Born of Portuguese-Goan parentage in British East-Africa, and raised in idyllic Goa on India's west coast, as a young man, Dom Martin joined the Benedictine Order, but left the monastic life to follow what would then become his twin beacons of art and poetry. Martin's artistic expressionism in which he mastered the triple art forms of pencil, ink and brush, is driven by that same Portuguese dynamism that centuries earlier inspired Vasco de Gama to open up a sea route from Europe to India and the Far East.
In his current volume, Dom follows the poetry with some 70 pages of text wherein our artist-poet pulls aside the curtains from his personal experiences, revealing those special Furies which have driven his artistic responses. These pages are replete with news reports of human tragedies. Reports about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict include targeted killing of Red Cross rescue workers and Palestinian children by the IDF, and articles which explore at some length the psychological background of the Palestinian suicide bombers. Other articles include the campaign of South African women against spousal abuse and several articles by the poet-artist himself.
In a surprisingly detailed discussion, after quoting Mao Tse Tung's comment that "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun", Dom Martin takes off his gloves to attack `Corporatism' which he identifies as "the New Order of Imperialism". He traces the malignant influence of the military-industrial ideology from the fall of the Soviet Union through World War II and the Balkan and Mideast wars. Addressing capitalism and The New World Order, the author pleads: "Let there be God between politics and affluence." Not content with this, Dom then takes on the world's professional economists, pointing out that despite "this century's mushrooming economics, recession has become the common denominator." In line with this, Dom suggests that adopting the "Principles of` Zerometrics", i.e., an economic system wherein zero is given the value of -1, would add ammunition to Wall Street's continuing battle against inflation. I'll let the reader work this out.
In striking contrast to the many pencil drawings in his two volumes of poetry, Dom Martin's legacy in both ink and oil surrealism remains on permanent exhibition in Goa at the "Mileage to Truth and Life" Art Gallery, established in 1976 and dedicated to his paintings. The gallery is located on the upper floor of the Bom Jesus Basilica, a national and World Heritage monument in the ancient city of Old Goa, once affectionately dubbed "The Rome of the East". Goa is visited by those thousands of tourists who journey to India's west coast every year.
I strongly recommend this book to serious readers, especially those with humanistic and artistic inclination. In his poetic responses, as well as his sociological and economic discussions, Dom Martin challenges us to re-examine our oft-neglected attitudes and biases that we may more honestly reshape our expectations.

This fascinating book represents Gene Clanton's matured historical wisdom about the importance of Populism in Kansas during the Gilded Age. From Sockless Jerry Simpson to the Wizard of Oz, Clanton illuminates the significant story of agrarian discontent in this crucial state along with the leaders and issues that make the subject so interesting and controversial. Clanton's work also provides key background for understanding modern American politics. Lewis L. Gould, Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Austin

Readers of Thomas Frank's current bestseller, WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS: HOW CONSERVATIVES WON THE HEART OF AMERICA, would do well to add O. Gene Clanton's A COMMON HUMANITY: KANSAS POPULISM AND THE BATTLE FOR JUSTICE AND EQUALITY 1854-1903, to their personal library. In a well-researched and written volume, Clanton adds the human interest details of how early Kansas agrarians struggled in the last half of the 19th century to overcome the burdens of industrial monopolies and credit shortages.
Clanton, like Frank a Kansas native, points out that although the Populist--or People's--Party withered away with the coming of the new century, its adherents' educational efforts laid the groundwork for the later successes of more potent and progressive reform efforts.

For intermediate level constume construction, but highly inspiring to the novice. Helpful for cosplay as well as stage.
This book goes into great detail concerning tools and technical sewing, materials and dyeing, drafting and creating patterns, measuring and fitting bodies, improvising props, and creating illusions. There is a helpful section about hair and hats, skipped over in other books. Many suggestions and ideas to make your own fake armour, jewelry, and shoes.
Pricey, but worth it. This book will bring out creativity you didn't know you had.

I can just echo the substance of remarks of the other reviewers on the contents. As an avid reader of mystery fiction, I can visualize opening a page at random and picking my next book to read. As a computer programmer, I look at books like this and envision how I would write the program that would generate this information. If the author did not use a computer program, I am doubly impressed. This book should be on the shelf of every crime fiction aficionado. If not on your shelf then that of your local library.
Indispensable for mystery fans and mystery writers!

This book is a must for any inveterate reader. It lists all the mystery writers, their varied pen names, the characters, book titles, films made from mystery books, and other curiously interesting bits of information. The price is daunting but is well worth it, believe me. This is one of those books that one can spend many happy hours just browsing through. The book is divided into two volumes with Volume 1 being the Author Index with 889 pages of mystery writers listed alphabetically by last name. It includes all known pseudonyms used by a particular author, along with the titles of the works, and the names of any characters created, series or one-shot. It also has the dates of publication and lists the publisher. A few examples of pseudonyms. Did you know that Stephen King also writes under the name Richard Bachman. Of course you did, everyone knows that. But did you know that Dean Koontz, popular mystery writer, also uses the names David Axton, Brian Coffey, Anthony North, Owen West, Deanna Dwyer, K.R. Dwyer, Leigh Nichols, and Richard Paige? How about Donald Westlake, author of the ever-popular 'Dortmunder' series of serio-comedic mysteries. He also uses the names Curt Clark, Tucker Coe, Timothy Culver, Samuel Holt, and Richard Stark. Lawrence Sanders sometimes uses the names Lesley Avaress or Mark Upton. John Creasey, author of the 'Toff' series, has more than a dozen different pen names he uses, and must hold some sort of record for sheer number of nom-de-plumes. Why pen names you ask? The book doesn't answer that question. In fact it doesn't even address it. This tome is strictly a presentation of facts; no long boring narratives. Who knows why an author elects to write under a different name than its own? There must be as many logical, or illogical, reasons as there are authors. Choose your own. Volume 2 is divided into seven sections, to include a Title Index (326 pages), Setting Index (98 pages), Series Index (24 Pages), Series Character Chronology (18 pages), Film Index (136 pages), Screenwriter's Index (48 pages), and Director's Index (29 pages). The Title Index is a veritable treasure trove of information to aspiring writers. It shows which titles have already been used and how often. For instance, did you know that there are five books with the title "Watchers"? Or six called "Tunnel"? There are over 2,100 that begin with the word "Murder" and 700 that begin with "Mystery". This listing alone would be worth its weight in gold to a writer struggling to find that just-so correct appropriate title. The Settings Index is another source of information to the aspiring writer. It lists the locale of all the works listed in this opus. Almost any location is listed, from cities to states to countries. For instance, did you know that there are 15 books listed as happening in Rhodesia, 4 in Monaco, and 9 pages of stories occurring in New York City! The Series Index includes the name of the character listed with its creator. Again, this is invaluable to a new author. Imagine if you will, writing the perfect mystery and sending it off to a receptive publisher only to be rudely informed by a sympathetic editor that the character's name you thought was original has been in used for over 40 years by another author. Embarrassing, to say the least! Not to mention the re-write time involved in changing all the myriad references to your not-so-original creation. The Series Character Chronology lists by year of introduction each series character along with the type of character (inspector, police, detective, priest, lawyer, doctor, etc.) country where usually located, name of the author, and the number of books this character appears in. The Film Index lists movies by title, with the title of the book origin, the author of the book, the studio name, and the year of the movie. The Screenwriter's and Director's Indexes are self-explanatory. To summarize, this book is a joy to own and to the aspiring writer, invaluable with the information that can be gleaned. It is heartily recommended and would make an excellent "special" gift at Christmastime or birthday.

Coalescence touches on many socio-political and religious factors that have shaped the consciousness of our society in the past, offering a glimpse into the possibility of a movement towards a more peaceful atmosphere that we would be proud to pass on to later generations. Wonderful book for anyone concerned with the current state of world affairs, as Michaels delivers a must read for everyone interested in the factors that may compose the future of humanity.
