Ms. Hollingdale's work provides the reader with intensely powerful essays and pictures that almost "forces" one to stop and spend time with each picture. I couldn't just glance through this book - it takes time, emotion and a willingness to open one's heart and mind. The stories AND the pictures, when combined, create a level of understanding that I had not even experienced prior to her book. I know several of the people portrayed in her book but putting all of these faces together with their very personal journeys into ONE book lets the reader truly get a picture of this historic struggle for a more "civil union".

This book answers the question, "Why did Vermont work so hard for Civil Union?"; and it answers it from every possible point of view. Ms. Hollingdale has done a remarkable job collecting the thoughts and feelings of legislators, educators, citizens, parents and others, to explain the desire, the need, and the struggle for Civil Union. This is a beautiful book! The photographs are stunning in their simplicity and yet the emotions are overwhelming. It is a piece of history and a work of art at the same time.

Linda Hollingdale's collection of essays and photographs is absolutely amazing in how it portrays the legislative struggle for Vermont's historic Civil Union from ALL perspectives.
Not only does this book bring one the awareness of this struggle, but also gives one the opportunity to "open their minds" to common humanity as a whole. Just when you think you've become so absorbed in the process of how civil unions came to be, the challenges overcome and rewards achieved, you begin to comtemplate what equal rights of ALL citizens is really about.
I would definitely recommended this book for all.

This important work is an unvarnished first-person account of one man's lifelong battle to secure rights for the mentally retarded citizens of Massachusetts. With no holds barred, Ricci chronicles the plight of the mentally retarded in Massachusetts during the second half of the twentieth century. In a style reflective of his unrelenting advocacy, Ricci recounts the painful decision he and his wife made to place their six-year-old son at Belchertown State School in the 1950s, the horrific medieval conditions he discovered and exposed in that institution, his founding of Advocacy Network, that organization's fight against uncaring state bureaucrats, and their hard-won, landmark federal court order to improve the lives of the mentally retarded. Crimes Against Humanity is a must-read for anyone with a social conscience.

Ricci's CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY is an essential read for anyone with a relative, friend, or client who suffers from mental retardation. Holding nothing back, Ricci recounts the horrendously inhumane conditions of Belchertown State School in Massachusetts during the 1950s and '60s, his formation of an advocacy group to support the retarded and their families, and a 20-year landmark federal court class-action suit to secure rights and protections for mentally retarded citizens. A work of courage, persistence, and faith.

I had to purchase this book for my cultural Anthropology course. Its not a bad book, in fact, it is actually quite enjoyable. Its definitely not one of those boring textbooks that choose to regurgitate facts. The organization of which the information is given about different cultures is very intuitive and great for anybody looking to learn a couple tidbits about our world and the cultures that live within it.

Even though I had to buy this book for an anthropology class for college, I absolutely love it. Every bit of information is both colorful and interesting. There are some things you wouldn't even guess were out there, but they are, and the people talked about in this book are extraordinary to learn about. Even just for reading because of interest in different cultures around the world, I would recommend this book to anyone. It was great.

Peters-Golden's Culture Sketches is a must have for any student of anthropology or anyone interested in the basics of anthropology. Each chapter reviews and details a particular culture/society and explains the particular culture in an academic and laymans way. In other terms, the book is easy to understand even if you do not know a thing about anthropology and it provides useful information for students and academics alike about 13 societies that exist or have existed on this planet. These are not detailed ethnographies, i.e. they do not explain every thing about the society. Peters-Golden gives a taste of each society and encourages to further explore the societies that interest the reader. If you are a student looking for an insight on what anthropologists study (such as economic systems, religion, rituals, beliefs in magic and mystics, marriage rites, rites of passage, etc) or anyone else who is curious about the other societies on this planet, this book is for you.

I found this book by accident at my local library while looking for books on the fall of Rome for a college paper. The librarian told me it was in the children's section, but that the author's books are so well written and highly documented that adults can use them too. And she was right. This book contains a wealth of information about gladiators, chariot races, and other Roman games, all done in a methodical, thorough, but consistently entertaining manner. Extensive footnotes, a good many of them informational, and a large bibliography add to the value of the volume. Meanwhile, I discovered that the author, Don Nardo, has written extensively about Rome's fall. His Decline and Fall of Ancient Rome (which borrows its title from Edward Gibbon's masterpiece), is also excellent and I plan to review it separately.

The best general non-scholarly overview of ancient Roman games I have seen so far. It's positively crammed with information even though it's a small book. The author does a really nice job of weaving in quotes by ancient authors, such as Ovid, Cicero, and others, which makes the text more interesting and also more authoritative. As an overall comment, I would call it excellent and extremely well researched and well written.

If you saw the recent movie "Gladiator" and happen to know a few things about real ancient Roman gladiators, as I do, then you were probably just as disappointed as I was. Most of the gladiator fights in the film were not accurately staged, especially the way they showed one guy taking on four or more opponents at a time, which rarely happened, if it happened at all! Anyone who wants to know what these fights were really like should pick up this book. It tells what the fights were really like and includes numerous fascinating deatils about the different types of gladiators. There were several that most people have never heard of, including ones that fought blind-folded!! The author also goes into the way the gladiators dressed, and the way Roman society both looked down on them as low lifes but also cheered them as heroes. The author also points out the movies that did accurately show gladiator fights, "Spartacus" and "Demetrius and the Gladiators" both of which I have seen and agree completely with him. And that's only part of the book. It also goes into the chariot races and mock naval battles and wild animal fights and more!! Unfortunately the book is short for someone like me who wants to know even more on the subject. But the author lists lots of books in the back and I am reading one of these now, "Gladiator" by Micahel Grant, which is also very informative.

The Deconstruction of Time is a necessary read for anyone interested in phenomenology or deconstruction--and David Wood shows clearly why an interest in one requires an interest in the other. He does so by tracing the central importance of the concept of time in works by Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger and Derrida. In each case, Wood analyzes the treatment of time with a clarity that makes the book accessible by nonexperts, and a rare sensitivity that will undoubtedly appeal to the well-versed reader as well. Taking the question of time as its axis, The Deconstruction of Time shows what is at stake in practicing phenomenology or deconstruction, illuminating along the way the fundamental tendencies, limitations, and values of each. In addition to his lucid analyses, Wood also offers sophisticated problematizations of the texts and positions he treats, submitting phenomenology to deconstruction, and holding deconstruction to a sort of phenomenological standard--he walks a fine and cautious line between the dominant impulses of these two ways of thinking about time, and he does so with grace and wit. Highly recommended!

This book is a fascinating reflection on the possibility of thinking time outside of the traditional metaphysical logic of
representation. David Wood shows that the contemporary
deconstructions of time lead to opening a sense -- and a future -- of philosophy as event, and performativity.
This is an important and original work, and a brilliant demonstration of what it might mean to speak of time, and thinking, as event. It also performs new interpretations of the works of Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, and Derrida.

In a fun and entertaining way, Dewey Doo-it stories tell kids about generous people and their work --using a cast of delightful characters called The Helpful Doo-its. This text was required for a class in School Administration in my post grad class at Seton Hall University. The author is easy to follow along with as he presents theories along with examples of organizational life in the education system. An excellent chapter on the Culture and Climate of Schools can be used by administrators in any field to better recognize these characteristics, as well as organizational health, before taking steps to change the culture or climate. Another very good chapter deals with Leadership in Schools and helps to identify the various theories of leadership and the strengths and weaknesses associated with each type. A great book for administrators in either the private or public sector.

This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. Stanton was a 19th century women's rights activist who had a complex, rationalist personal theology that changed and evolved thoughout her lifetime. This book reveals this theology, her weaknesses, and her. Recomendo este livro altamente!!!!!!

Reading the book not only helped me to understand the political and legal environment for women during Ms. Stanton's life, but also helped me to understand Ms. Stanton as a person and her inner drive for equality. Her narrative provides us with stories to illustrate her passion for justice and her perservance in working toward the woman's vote. We get a picture of the territories and the states during those early times as she stuggles to get to places by means that would seem alien to us now.
Ms. Stanton demonstrates that her partnership with Susan B. Anthony was inevitable as their strengths complimented each other to help them fulfill their work toward equality. Although neither women lived to see the amendment pass, there are no signs of regret for all the years of dedication. We know she knows it will happen. Through her reality, we share the frustrations, the angers, the joys, and the triumphs.
I liked knowing Ms. Stanton had written the book and feel I got to know her courage, wit, and character by reading it. I highly recommend the book.

This textbook is now available in second edition, as of the fall of 1999. The second edition is significantly updated, with more references to the impact of technology on communication between the sexes and more attention paid to issues surrounding diversity. A new, highly provocative chapter has been included on power abuses in human relationships. Three main topics--sexual harassment, sexual assault and dating rape, and partner violence--are the focus of this chapter.
