Graphic Design Books

This DVD is terrific. I have taken Quark and Illustrator training at Noble Desktop. It was great, but I couldn't afford the price of a 3rd class. This DVD was just about as good as being there. They have a demonstration, then a note to tell you to do an exercise in the workbook -- just like they do in their classes. Overall, outstanding. And Dan is a great instructor!

I've been tinkering around with photoshop for awhile, and I knew a little, but I still didn't feel comfortable. I didn't want to take a class because it was expensive and I was a little afraid of being the slowest one in class. I looked over some books at the bookstore, they were pretty cheap, but I wasn't convinced that I will be able to get through it without getting stuck or confused. So I decided I would try a DVD. I made the right choice. This DVD walks you through each excercise on your computer screen, then you do it yourself from the step by step workbook. And when I got stuck I just watched it again, and figured out my problems. After the first excercise I had already learned so much than I knew before. GREAT for beginners like me. I'm no computer wizard but now I feel like a photoshop wizard, and I'm comfortable enough to tackle any idea.

There's not so much to say. If you're looking for a showcase of good/excellent advertising just try this one.
Great collection, absolutely NO text to read, like all showcase books, but high level of content, like all Graphis books.

From Billboards to Street Furniture, this book covers it all. I got my start building Billboards and ideas gleemed from this book. The information is "pound-for-pound" a great guide to the history, present and future of outdoor advertising. If just one person with vision would read this book, you might find he'll be the next Ted Turner, Wayne Huizenga BOTH took it outdoor to make a fortune. Way to go David!

Samella Lewis has updated and further developed her definitive guide on African-American Art. As a former student instructed on the subject with her first edition of this book as our class text, I can definitively say that this book provides a solid understanding of the different art movements and a variety of examples of the works. Also from the perspective of a young museum professional who has worked with African-American art collections, I highly recommend this volume as a foundation of basic knowledge on the subject.

This is a must-have book about AGP bus. It also covers how 3D video and video conferencing work.

Following the same style of the other books of the System Architecture series, this book show deeply how the AGP bus works. Also, it shows the operation of 3D video boards and video conferencing, since those aplicattions need the use of the AGP bus. It is an indispensable book for all who wants to learn more about PC hardware.

Great book, with large 11 x 11 cover reproductions. Too bad they aren't actual 12 x 12 size, but other than that, this is one's a perfect 10. The best album art collection I've seen, without a doubt.

You can see three hundred LP covers in this fascinating survey of sound track albums. The large size format (almost twelve inches square) means that the many whole page covers are just a bit shorter than life size, others are four to a page. The reproduction is excellent.

Plenty of these covers use the original movie poster illustrations, done by such greats as Bob Peak or Saul Bass. Ace cartoonist Jack Davis has seven covers including his most famous, for the 1963 movie "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world". Strangely many great illustrations used on the poster or LP cover have no artist credits. Perhaps more than any other type of record cover sound tracks used a wider range of graphics and design and this certainly comes across looking through these colorful pages.

There are probably more than twenty of these large size paperbacks devoted to LP cover art published over the last few years and this sound track edition is worth adding to your collection.

This book represents one of the very few studies of one of the masters of American advertising and graphic design. Brodovitch served as mentor to such photographic luminaries as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, and his distinctive and very modernistic style of layout and use of the grid are exemplary. He was integral to magazine design in the middle of this century, and yet has fallen into relative unknown. Unreasonably so. Any student of graphic design, its design or current practice, would do well to own this book. In this age of busy, frantic graphic pages, Brodovitch's work reflects a serene, yet knife-edged clarity.

Alexy Brodovitch is one of the best art directors of the 20th Century. This book is worth every penny because it really allows you to see his work in the same scale that he created it at. Thus when you are looking at a magazine spread from the master, you are seeing it full size - and not as a little pretty icon that decorates too many design annuals. In addition there are examples of his raw layouts, which really let you see a genius at work. This book is a must for any fan of graphic design, photography and fashion.

This book give justice to a great work in design and visual effects, more thand the movie did. At the end: AVP2 was a bad movie, with great effects, with great design and here the design and fx production process are very well reported. Great book and art.

This book, much like the original AVP art book, is perfect for anyone who finds the process of monster making fascinating as well as the movies they inhabit.

Very cool behind the scenes art, exposition, and photography illustrates the creative process that brought the creatures to life. A must for any fan of either series, or monster fans in general.

Before committing a couple of days to museum hopping while in Boston, a word to the wise: this book is a must for understanding the scope of the collection of Amercian Decorative Arts - everything that makes the MFA one of the best museums in America. But more important than that, this is a compendium of examples of some of the finest art. The reproductions are excellent with all of the data needed to give a brisk brush up on not only the work illustrated but the timeframe incidentals that make the MFA such a user friendly museum. Whether for the personal library or for the perfect gift for art lovers, this guide (MFA Highlights series ) is highly recommended.

For an illustrator starting out, or one well-seasoned, this book offers so much inspiration and insight. Being in the art field is difficult enough, so having this great source of information is such an asset-It gives you an idea of what kind of work is out there, competition you are up against, and ideas on techniques and style. Although it isn't a "how to" book, the fact that it has thousands of pages of fellow illustrators and graphic designers best work is enough to make anyone learn something new from viewing it. I highly recommend this book as a tool for any illustrator or designer.
