Katrina Soup

Two years ago today I was in New Orleans, gutting houses for Habitat for Humanity. My son, my brother, his son and I were there for several weeks, and got to see first-hand what the aftermath of Katrina was like. It's similar to childbirth: until you've experienced it first hand, the full impact doesn't really hit you. I had seen the photos and the footage, but as we drove through the 9th Ward on the day we first arrived, I realized NOTHING had prepared me for what I was seeing in front of me, that day, June 18, 2006. It didn't seem as if we were still in America - it was more like being in the aftermath of a war zone in some other country. The wide streets, empty and silent; the school-bus-sized piles of what had been the entire contents of a family's home; the stench that lay over everything (this came from the refrigerators stuffed with food and rotten water: "Katrina Soup", my brother called it). And in the trees that were still upright, if you looked closely, you could see where strands of Mardi Gras beads still hung from people having thrown them up there, in celebration, over a year and a half ago. The book was so brilliant - his photographs bring it all back to me in vivid relief. The one that affected me the most was the one of the shrimp boat sitting at the end of the street. My brother took me to see that same boat the first night we were in New Orleans, and I visited it several times after. And his descriptions - !! The heat, the isolation, the fear, and the adventure of what he was living. God bless his friends and family for saving his e-mails and urging him to publish them. This book is an absolute treasure.

David Spielman's book is both awesome and emotionally jarring. It's as close as one can come to experience Katrina without having been there.

I evacuated, returned to my own Uptown neighborhood eight weeks after the storm... and after just now looking at David's book I'm seeing it all over again. And, I'm seeing things I've never seen (Six Flags under 20+ feet of water). The emails walk you through what it was really like, the photos are reminders of what happened to this American city. All Americans should see these unique photos, this unique perspective, as we continue to try and fathom what happened here. This is the perfect presentation. I don't live in New Orleans anymore for a million reasons... but these photos take me 'home' again, and this is a book you will show your friends for years to come.

Mr. Spielman's approach in presenting the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is excellent. He guides the reader, using photography, to relate the sequences of events in a very clear, realistic and poignant way, especially, on his photograph depicting the sick and the poor waiting for medical services in a cold morning in Audubon Park in December nearly three months after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. showing a Third World situation inside the world's most advanced and richest country. All because of bureaucratic red tape and FEMA inability to handle a catastrophy of such magnitude.

When I was a little girl, I never tired of gazing at James Archambault's amazing photographs of Kentucky in my dad's copy of the original "Kentucky." When I grew up, moved away from home to Arizona, and realized how much of Kentucky was a part of me, my mother presented me with the updated version one Christmas. Now that she has retired to Florida and is homesick for her first Christmas away from the Bluegrass, I'm giving her a copy of her own...although I do fear that it may make her even more homesick for the rolling hills and changing seasons of our native home. At any rate, I wouldn't dream of giving her any other book of Kentucky. We Kentuckians know that this series is the one to have and to give.

It is also hard for me living way from Kentucky - as I attend Auburn University. When I do get homesick, I get out Kentucky II and it takes me there. It takes me back to the times of working on the farm, enjoying the beautiful fall colors, and the being with a brand of people like no where else. If you are a native Kentuckian or just want to enjoy the beautiful scenery of our state - from the Western Kentucky tobacco farms, to the Bluegrass, to the rugged mountains and forests of Eastern Kentucky - buy this book! As a amateur photographer, I can say James Archambeault is a hero!

It is difficult living far from "my old Kentucky home" so to speak. However, a quick trip to the bookshelf for James Archambeault and Thomas Clark's Kentucky II quickly brings me home again. Kentucky II is predominantly a picture book that focuses on the natural beauty of Kentucky. Oh, and what wonderful pictures they are! The plunging cliffs of Red River Gorge seem almost within reach. The endless miles of streams and rivers look close enough for a swim. Kentucky II captures magnificently the beauty and serenity that is Kentucky. On the other hand, the book does focus too much on the natural side. Kentucky II is primarily devoted to nature, rural culture, and horse racing. There are very few pictures of city or town life. The book itself says "the cities, towns, and villages that today hold slightly more than half of Kentucky's population" (17). This half was nearly snubbed by this book. Louisville, Kentucky's first class city, gets one picture outside of the Churchill Downs horse racing track, while Kentucky's numerous second-class cities get two pictures total, one of Lexington and one of Covington. Kentucky II fails to deliver a complete picture of Kentucky. However, the pictures that are there are so wonderful that this book deserves at least a four star rating. If this book had been named Natural Kentucky, then it might seem less unsure of its mission. This book is a must have for those who wish to have the natural beauty of Kentucky at their fingertips.

Richard Kern here has presented a fine collection of photographs. Though his style, at least in this presentation, seems to be mostly snap shots of ameture models; there are some nice shots none the less.

This volume could also be called 'The Best of Richard Kern' as it presents a review of his work ranging from 1976 to 2001. Covering a wide range, we find bondage shots and girls with guns, as well as girls in the bedroom, bathroom and other scenarios, presenting an overview of Kern's interests and low-key fetish work.

Perhaps the strongest pictures are the close-up portrait shots, where the models reciprocate your gaze, as though daring you to enter their slightly dark and edgy world. In one shot, a small lizard crawls over a model's face, in the stark monochrome looking almost like a tribal tattoo. Most striking is the picture from 1993, simply titled 'Monica with Candle'. The model tilts her head backward and a lighted candle protrudes upright from her mouth. A very arresting picture the first time you see it (why that was not used on the cover is a mystery. Too provocative maybe?) Certainly a deeply erotic image.

Like all the best books of photography, this one starts well and gets better the more you look into it. A good one to keep on the bookshelf and delve into from time to time, and well worth buying.

This book deseves to be on even the Queen of Englands coffe table but I for one will keep it hidden away as a unsering boy may hide his chocolete easter eggs from his anoying sister. (ABLOL)

Gorgeous portraits - full of emotion and complexity. I originally bought this book because I was interested in the fashion celebs - Todd Oldham, As Four, Simon Doonan, John Bartlett, etc, but all the other celebrities in the book - John Waters, Edward Albee, Michael Cunninham - certainly don't hurt, either.

A compelling, gorgeous book - totally unique. Gay and straight readers alike will be captivated by the interior images so beautifully displayed in this newly published addition to the photography genre. While by no means a book on interior design, the spaces depicted will be a source of fascination to readers who delight in viewing interesting homes. The human subjects, too, are intriguing. Alternately calm and kooky, they don't dominate the photographs, but are essential to the composition. A thrilling read. (Or, rather, experience.)

Clutter Grouped Equals Art?

The photographer Tom Atwood writes in his "Artist's Statement" that he wanted to do a book of color photos of clothed gay men in New York who live in apartments. The photographs should balance both the portrait of the individual with his environment. He describes this book as a "miscellaneous catalogue of personalities and living spaces." The models come from a variety of professions: writers, artists, composers, designers, interior decorators, attorneys-- John Waters, Edmund White, Ned Rorem, John Ashbery, Edward Albee et al. Most of them are collectors of practically any and everything: books, crosses, musical instruments, paintings, photographs, porcelain poodles, wigs, etc. Some of the subjects arrange their "stuff" well while others do not. I could not be in Joe Holtzman's kitchen (p. 42) for more than five minutes without jumping out the window. On the other hand, the apartment of Eric Bernhoft and Peter Mintun (p. 15) is most inviting.

The photographer in 70 frames or so manages not to repeat himself at all or even come anywhere close to repeating himself, no small feat. Some of my favorites are that of Billy Basinski (p. 64) where the model is seated on a sofa in front of floor-to-ceiling windows with beautiful light streaming in, Andrew Solomon (p. 61) in a beautiful but claustrophobic shot and Christophe Le Gorju (p. 39) where the model is standing to one side of a window which makes a beautiful Modrian-like grid. The most unusual living space has to be that of Tobi Wong (p. 31) which is described as being an eight by nine foot apartment.

A friend of mine used to say that regardless of how diverse the objects were, that you could hang anything together on a wall so long as you grouped them. This book of very fine photographs perfectly illustrates that theory.

VIEWS is a totally mouth-watering glimpse of Kobi's work -- more of which is on his website www.kobi-israel.com. He does a lot of travel, landscape and gay lifestyle stuff that's also really cool.

The book completely connected with me because like Kobi's experiences in the Israeli army, this reminds me of my adolescence ' from team sports to the college dorm -- when I didn't know what was up but was sure that my feelings toward other guys were a lot more than just friendly. Some of the images are pretty physical ' but really the book captures that confusion over intimacy with guys that were suppose to be just friends. This is a beautiful, sultry and pretty intriguing look inside Kobi's world.

A Touching View of Young Israeli Troops from Both Public and Private Sides

This short portfolio by Israeli artist Kobi Israel is more a document about repression within the military setting than it is a survey of fine photography. The images, while always interesting and touching and revealing of inner conflicts, aren't up to the finely honed artistic status of his other works. But the fact that the message is so powerful forgives any artistic looseness: the photographs are more like snapshots and in the long run that contributes to the power of his story.

As Israel so well explains his stance, "The thin line between homo-social and homo-erotic in army life can be so confusing and torturous for a gay soldier. Soldiers hug and kiss each other, say 'I love you brother' to each other, sleep together - sometimes lean on each others' chests, sometimes share a tiny mattress, have communal showers where they play 'boy games' like throwing water and soap on each other, sometimes share a hot shower,...". "In 1988 when I was 18, I joined the army. In a series of photos in this book I have tried to recreate the feeling of loneliness that I suddenly felt, torn by confusing emotions of 'brotherly' love and sexual attraction to my fellow soldiers, by fear mixed with beauty and fantasy. Soldiers look manly, confident and beautiful. So are the soldiers in my photos. But look at their eyes ... they reveal the real feelings. A body full of beauty, masculinity and youth, when erupting with sexuality, can be misleading - the eyes tell the full story - there is a deep loneliness, a hidden forbidden passion, fear and confusion in these eyes."

In this time of war throughout the globe it is well to read and look at Israel's view of camaraderie in the military. Understanding the soldiers' needs and fears and the way those feelings are acted out is a quiet revelation. Kobi Israel is an artist with a heart. Recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

This is a subtle and very intimate look at some of the young men in the army of Israel. It is subtle because it captures "innocent and casual" moments, where these men share time in situations that are not prone to eroticism...but...the pictures and situations are open to the intrpretation and imagination of the viewer. It is intimate, because the collection again captures moments that would not otherwise be seen by an unknowing public...hence...we view these young men as if we were, as the saying goes, "a fly on the wall." This is an interesting and unique collection.

"A young Israeli photographer is fascinated by the topic 'Men'. Kobi Israel takes natural, very erotic photos of young, well-built Israelis. Awarded many a title and been seen at several exhibitions, his first illustrated book has now been published by Bruno Gm?nder. In his pic-tures he describes the [alternative] lifestyle in Israel in impressive shots. Soldiers as an essential element of Israeli life also play an important role for Kobi Israel. His photos are not intended to provoke. He does not want to glorify war, but the cohabitation of these men. Apart from the partly documentary pictures of soldiers, there are erotic pictures of imposing colourfulness and unusual intimacy. Simply a must for the lovers of modern photography of men. "

This wonderful collection of color photographs reminds us that through the introduction of color we moved from the world of Black and White into the world of Color Photography;and that it took place in a relativly short period of only 20 years-1939 to 1959.
Though the change was somewhat imprecise, over a short period we came to think of color as opposed to black and white in virtually every medium where images were made This included everything from persnal snapshots, movies, newspapers,TV,the Comics, wedding pictures,...you name it ,color became the norm.
As a young lad,I along with everyone "saw" WWII as Black and White.Yes there was some color around,as this book points out in the years leading up to WWII, and pretty much into he ffties. We even thought that to view images in B&W was normal.Ihe wholesale change happened without us even noticing it.
This was brought home to me in 1959. I was attending a Hockey Game of the Montreal Canadians at Molson Stadium . In walked a man with his son who was about 8 years old. When they started down the aisle ,the boy exclaimed;"Look,Dad,it's in color!!" Yes even then,we were mostly watching sports, news and all, on B&W TV's.
It wasn't until much after WWII that we saw those images of Hitler, bombed out cities,Pearl Harbor,Buchenwald,Nurenberg,Patton,Roosevelt,Churchill,Stalin,Truman, and all the Soldiers,Sailors and Airmen and their weapons in reality through color.
It's hard to realize that the ability to make pictures like we see of the World's Fair in New York in 1939,was already here;but it took many years to become the norm.Another thing that comes through very clear is the expert skill of the photographers to use color at its advantage. Also clear is the high quality of Color almost from the beginning.
A wonderful tribute to the people who transformed our world of images from B&W to "Living Color-in Kodachrome".

An intriguing look at the recent past that most of us have only seen in black and white. Intriguing in that most of the exterior shots, especially the news photos still sort of look black and white, the overall colors that come across are grey and beige. This only makes the remaining photos, mostly interior studio work, seem dazzling. The cost of producing, in print media, regular color images was too expensive so color was basically left to advertising until the mid-fifties. It wasn't until the late seventies that color art photography was finally accepted.

The book certainly has some fascinating photos, not so much the political figures and celebrities of the time but images of everyday life. It is here that I thought the book was rather disappointing, of the 207 photos about a quarter are studio portraits of celebrities, just the sort of photos that were printed in color on magazine covers to be found on any newsstand. I would have preferred to have far fewer of these portraits.

If you are interested in color photos from the past have a look at Bound for Glory: America in Color 1939-43 with 175 images of daily life in America (and fortunately no celebrities). A book that covers Britain in color, from 1945 to 1952, is The S&J;Silver Lining Cross R by Robin Cross. Like 'Kodachrome' these two books offer a new look at the past.

This is a glorious volume that reproduces, beautifully, some of the most stunning images of the mid-twentieth century, captured on what is probably the finest colour medium ever produced. Look on these works, ye digital photographers, and despair!

Kodachrome, along with Technicolor, passed into the language as a byword for quality; sadly, it's now passed into history. I am grateful to the publishers of this book for producing a worthy epitaph.

Upon getting the book, I could understand why she wanted it so badly. It is amazing to see images of Hitler and WWII from my history book except in full blown color.

This is a great book for anyone out there who is interested in history, photography, or if you are interested in seeing history in a whole new light.

This book is incredible -- an honest and sensitive portrait of life in the changing Sonoran desert. I picked it up yesterday and haven't been able to stop looking at it since. Apart from the photography, there are two wonderful essays. In the second, "Another Country", Thomas E. Sheridan tells of falling in love with a place in a way that speaks intimately to my own experience of and passion for Mexico. But I'd better stop before I give a whole dissertation... Buy this book! Hits home where the rubber meets the road -- the interface with clients!

Review Date: 2007-03-14
Based on the other reviews, it seems I am not alone in my liking this book. Obviously from my rating I appreciated the book -- it contains real examples and points that I will apply to my organization today. A simple read, but very content rich ... powerful.

We have all heard the cliché "People buy from people" - this is such a vaunted phrase in sales. We hear another cliché ties in most companies as well: "Sales drives the business". My review will ultimately tie to these. While at first I thought the theme of this essay to be around corporate strategies and their pitfalls, I quickly understood my preconception was incorrect. This book actually ties together the "Gaps" in the execution of sales strategy to the "Gap" in executing the corporate strategy.

Crawford does a terrific job of using real company numbers and examples to demonstrate what we all can agree to but rarely look to act upon. The truth about clichés is they usually contain some key truths and/or insights ... but too often we overlook their guidance (thus the term "cliché"). The Last Link pieces together a simple but critical connection between "Strategy Creation" and the "How-to's" and discipline around executing that strategy. Using what Crawford terms a "3-D model" (data, dialogue and discipline) the book introduces what seems a simple and straight-forward concept: we all have some key agreements we need (these are termed "Pivotal Agreements"). From the hundreds of agreements we gain we can likely distill these into a few "Pivotal" agreements and then we can repeatedly and consistently focus upon these. If a salesperson uses the client data available (collecting that data with some strategic intention as demonstrated in the book), and then applies some of the key dialogue skills/principles shared within this book in their customer interfaces, then their results will improve - the needle will move.

Sounds straight forward; however, tie this to a sales management, support, and leadership discipline for uniformity and replication of those same single-instance results and you will see an overall sales impact build.

Crawford then links this back to the connection between this sales build and the real execution of the corporate strategy (remember that cliché of "Sales drives the business"). Crawford gives some great real examples in the Appendices (Appendix C has some excellent examples into which you can easily relate), and also adds some fantastic behavioral improvement skills (Chapter 5 on Dialogue really hits home - key skills you can use today: again, remember that cliché of "People buy from people").

A must read for any sales executive

I didn't like the organization of this book. I could have handled Chapter 1 as an introduction, but not 1 and 2. I thought Chapter 8 was really what should have been the introduction followed by chapters 3-6 and then 9. I didn't like chapters 1, 2 and 7 at all. And I had no need for the "Application" section.

The book could have been so much better if it had been much less verbose. And some more real world examples mixed in the main body of the book would have been helpful, too. There was just too much theory thrown at me in an unorganized manner without some stories and examples thrown in to make the book interesting.

Basically the premise of this book was very simple. A company with a sound business plan must integrate its ENTIRE workforce into the plan, including its sales function. If the sales team is not strategically integrated into the plan so it functions seamlessly as part of the company, then there will be a "broken link." And a broken link or "gap" will create inefficiencies and loss to the company.

The problem the author identifies in this book as it applies to a sales team is equally applicable to company Web sites. Too many companies think they must just have a Web site and they throw something together that looks nice and is little more than an electronic brochure. Web sites can do much more for the company if they are integrated into the company's business plan to serve a valuable marketing purpose.

The funny thing about this book is the author says he's been making a living for 25 years selling the contents of this book to large corporations. I'm torn between giving this book a 3 star or a 4 star rating. My review is pretty scathing so I am going to throw it a bone. 4 stars!

There are dozens of excellent books already in print that explain how to formulate and then execute a strategy that - in Lawrence Hrebiniak's apt phrase - "really works." Indeed, Gregg Crawford cites several sources throughout his narrative which would have been listed in a bibliography, had he provided one. Nonetheless, most strategies are ineffective. Why? According to Crawford, "Because although companies put huge effort into designing, discussing, and launching their strategies, they neglect the last link - they sabotage their strategy where it matters most, where the company comes into contact with its customers. They fail to forge the vital connection between strategy and execution at the customer interface, where margins, growth, and profitability are all determined. And yet somehow, companies still expect to see results." And they do, for better or worse.

In this context, I am reminded of what Barbara Bund has to say about the importance of establishing and then sustaining what she calls an "outside-in" organization. Crawford agrees that execution of a corporate strategy that is not customer-centric is almost certain to fail. Throughout the narrative in his book, he offers a step-by-step process by which to identify and then avoid or eliminate "hidden profit killers." He explains what interface management is and why it is "the most important component of successful sales strategy execution." In order to "rewire a sales organization," Crawford suggests, it is necessary to proceed as follows:

1. Consummate "pivotal agreements" with customers that are connected with the financial metrics of the given corporate strategy;

2. Have sales initiatives be guided and informed by what he calls a "3D" model which involves gathering relevant data, using focused dialogue, and executing strategy with discipline;

3. Effectively use "dialogue principles" (e.g. value creation and agreement execution) as tactics to manage customer interface;

4. Formulate a Sales Execution Plan that defines an organization's specific plans for executing corporate strategy at the point of customer interface; and

5. Successfully implement the strategy through deployment, sponsorship, and reinforcement of rigorous discipline (key term) by senior-level executives and other on the leadership team.

I especially appreciate Crawford's pragmatic approach with his primary emphasis on "what" and "how." Moreover, he also offers valuable advice on "what not to do" and "how not to do it." Excellence of performance can only be achieved through a process of elimination of what doesn't work while continuing and constantly improving what does, achieving excellence with discipline that, on occasion, must be tenacious. It takes faith and trust to remain faithful to an appropriate strategy. Sometimes courage is required when there are serious problems to solve, formidable barriers to overcome, etc. Long ago, Jack Dempsey said that "champions get up when they can't." Presumably Crawford agrees that companies that complete "the last link," while encountering all manner of difficulties that "sabotage" their efforts to do so, will eliminate the "hidden profit killers."

How to do that? A cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective answer is provided in Crawford's brilliant book.

This book is excellent for both the novice and veteran horseperson. There are a few mistakes that the editor didn't catch (some spelling errors of people mentioned in the text), but overall a very attractive and informative book. This book has a deep personal meaning for me because in the late 1970's I was fortunate to have been a "student" of Bobby's at his ranch in Pleasant Grove, CA. Even as a young girl I admired Bobby's talent with horses and one should especially take note of how he uses his hands when he rides. As a horseperson I also tried to immitate his light touch on a horses' mouth. It's very fitting that the cover photograph is a picture of Bobby's hands!

Bobby Ingersoll has written not only the perfect training manual for starting young horses, but a beautifully illustrated and informative coffee table book as well. He has given credit to the talented artists who braid these hackamores and what is unfortunately becoming a lost art. His soft and gentle style of starting the young colt through feel rather than demanding submission through force will benefit everyone who truly loves horses and strives to be a real horseman. His tribute to the true horsemen and horsewomen of past and present makes you want to just stand up and cheer. Bravo, Bobby Ingersoll!

Beautiful!! Beautiful!!

The Mexican Traditions on starting green horses has been handed down from generation to generation. The Jaquima came first, with it the colt was taught to handle himself to perfection and bridling is the last step.

Training horses is a serious business..., the Bible of training colt with Hackamore is Ed Connell book, but if you want to tune some details of your training with the hackamore, this it is the book that you need.

The legendary California Hackamore and the stocke Horse is another great book with enormous tips and knowledge, beautiful pictures!!.

Right Now I'm looking for the Benny Guitron DVD, the Master on training horses with Jaquima.

El Vaquero Mexicano "El Charro" ---- The American Cowboy "The Gentleman".

¡Hermoso! ¡Hermoso!

"The Legendary California Hackamore and the stock horse", es otro gran libro con enormes consejos y conocimientos asi como hermosas fotografias!!.

EL Vaquero Mexicano es "EL Charro" --- El vaquero Americano es "El Caballero".

If you've ever wondered while traveling to scenic locales whether they served as backdrops for some of the most momentous events in this country, this book has the answers. Brought to you in the lovely form of photographs taken across a glorious landscape - in conjunction with the impressions made on Lewis and Clark back in the day - this work transcends other photography books and moves in the direction of magic.

I especially enjoyed the humanistic asides on the "slave" and "female" perspective that featured so powerfully on the journey.

A beautiful book at many levels.

I was surprised and excited to receive a signed photo journal from George Thomas. I had looked in books that offered good quality, applicable pictures that I could look at while researching and reading other books (i.e. Undaughted Courage- Steven Ambrose, and Out West- Dave Duncan). I was surprised how hard it was to find a book with many pictures of the trail highlights

This book has not only pictures of the many landmarks along the trail but also suggested old camp sites and river forks described in the story books and journals (I believe they were taken around the same time of year the explorers traveled).

I would suggest this book for everyone!

This is an excellent overview of the terrain Lewis and Clark encountered on their expedition of 1804-1806. It consists mostly of gorgeous photos of scenery. As the author states in the preface,"If Lewis and Clark had had the good fortune to document their amazing journey with photographs, these are the scenes that would have been recorded because these are the scenes described in their journals." The photos cover the entire route, and at about the time of year that Lewis and Clark were there.

I recommend this book.
