I bought this book because I read all the wonderful reviews and frankly I was extremely disappointed. I am a real dog lover and melt at the sight of any dog but these photos lack life. They look like mannequins and very few of them show the wonderful expressions we so often see in dogs and which make dogs so utterly lovable. For a book that is trying to tug at your heart on the subject of shelter dogs, it has failed spectacularly.
Give this book a miss.

I'm an aspiring photographer/shelter owner...and this book just confirmed why I want to do each of those things. I cried when I read some of the stories in the back, and each picture was so darn cute. I love this book, and (when I get one) will sit on my coffee table for all my guests to look at!

This book gives us details on shelter dogs, who the author Traer Scott, has met in her travels. So touching, uplifting and heartbreaking, especially when we learn so much about them and are told at the end which dogs lived and were adopted...and which ones were not (sniffle)...If this book doesn't convince you to adopt from an animal shelter, then I don't know what will! A portion of the proceeds from this book and Scott's other book, Street Dogs, are donated to animal charities. Worth it to buy both! Thanks for this great, insightful look at America's animal shelters.

This is a book of fabulous pictures. We bought it to inspire paintings and other artwork for my brother. He absolutely loved it. You will look at it over and over. It's big, heavy, so colorful, and great for all ages. A good book to leave sitting out to inspire conversation, fill time, or appreciate the world around you.

Even people who aren't as avid about nature as I am have found this book to be simply spectacular. It was given to me as a Christmas present and promptly got passed around the room. People who only take a glance have bought their own copy! The large, professionally printed photographs will take your breath away, and the captions and stories are just as entertaining. This book is organized neatly into chapters, and its layout is stylish and modern.

This beautifully illustrated and timely piece of literature uses imagination, intoxicating photographic talent, and intreague creating this work of art, with everlasting beauty for all ages. The distinguished global vastness pulls the reader into its clutches and keeps them craving for the next page. The accompanying CD highlights the haunting sounds of the Rainforest and echos it's melodic and transcendent voice, escorting the listener to the very heart of the...Rainforest! A+++ Highly recommended.

I have read this book quite many years ago, or just two, and I can honestly say it's beautiful in the most breath-taking way. The photographs are seriously impressive and I don't think you've ever seen snowflakes quite like that. The text is great as well and you get to learn a lot of things about snowflakes.

Don't think this book would "steal" the mystery of snowflakes, as with everything in life, the more questions are answered, the more questions. So with this book.

I recommend it to anyone interested in snow and snowflakes in particular. It would make a wonderful gift, also. I can't recommend this book enough.

Every snowfall is an opportunity

This handsome book should motivate the reader to appreciate -- perhaps even delight in -- every snowfall. The photos are superb; they are often curiously interesting and always a visual feast. Libbrecht provides an easy to understand description of the formation of snow crystals (not all of them are flakes, he points out.) The book will encourage some readers to want more, and Libbrecht provides a companion volume -- a Field Guide -- for that purpose. This is more than a mere coffee-table volume. Libbrecht makes the physics behind the snow crystals not only understandable, but charming. Libbrecht uses clear prose without "dumbing down" the science. Now, if Libbrecht will only produce another volume with 3D or stereo views...!

Well written, with unparalleled photos of snow crystals. The book contains accurate physics, nice insights into snow crystal morphology and growth and is at a level that will engage almost everyone. Enough information here for a physicist to enjoy the book, but presented in a way that will not intimidate the layman. Just gazing at the pictures of the snowflakes will inspire wonder at the beauty of these little ephemeral creations, and is an antidote for frazzled nerves any time of the day, in any season. I've bought several to give away and one for myself, and it probably won't be the last one.

The reviewer below who thought the author doesn't give enough credit to God for the amazing design of the snowflake, may be a little too demanding. Perhaps the author thought the little crystals speak for themselves, and lets the reader draw his own conclusions. I can't look at these beautiful pictures without marveling at a God who is so creative He doesn't "know when to quit"!

Orginally, I purchased this book as a gift and after browsing through it, I decided I had to have a copy of my very own. The photography in this book is excellent. The photographs are shot in black and white in order to focus on the church hats. The stories behind the hats are amazingly beautiful. I will never look at a black woman in a church hat the same ever again. I learned that each hat has a story that must be told.

I love to wear hats. I grew up in the South. My Mom wore hats to church every Sunday. She absolutely loved hats! Therefore, when I became of age I too became a hat person! It was like a family tradition. All the girls in the family dressed in hats on Sunday.
I love hats so much, I wear them every day of the week. During the week I usually wear cowboy hats or something sporty. However, on Sunday, it the dressy going to church hat. And if you are into hats, you will know what I mean about the, 'church hats'.
Being raised in the South, you were'nt completely dressed when going to church until you put on your hat and heels. To this day I do not go to church without a hat.
This book, Crowns, really takes me back. It's a wonderful book. It is on a table in my home and it makes for great conversation with visitors.
FANTASTIC BOOK!!!!!

Coming from a hat wearing tradition, I fully appreciated "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats". My hat was a pill box a la Jacqueline Kennedy which shows how old I am. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photographs and the women's stories. Hat wearing is a fine tradition and very much a part of Black culture that Michael Cunningham has captured in all its glory.

This little book couldn't be any more straightforward or useful. Over the span of 500 pages, each page is devoted to a different artist, with one representative work by that artist and a short description of his or her life and work. At the end, an invaluable 6-page glossary provides short and informative descriptions of the major genres and schools of art (e.g., Fauvism, Constructivism, Expressionism, etc.) that don't require a PhD to understand, as well as explanations of common art materials and techniques (e.g., gesso, fresco, tempera, etc.). It's a great value, and much more inexpensive than almost any other art book this informative. Buy it now!

As an avid photographer - and one who has spent a lot of time shooting in EA - these are precisely the sort of images that make me want to grab my camera and rush back into the Serengeti. It's a well selected collection - perhaps not the greatest photographs I have ever seen, but a beautiful selection nontheless. A wonderful departure from the stock "post-card" photograpy that's been pouring out of the continent, and some are so breathtakingly vivid (like the image used on the cover) that you can almost feel the dust swirl around you, and feel the hot African sun on your neck.

It's a beautiful book. Would make an an ideal gift for the nature photographer, and for the nature lover...

A companion book rather than a sequel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-01
"Save the Cat Goes to the Movies" is not so much a sequel to the original "Save the Cat", but an elaboration of the ideas put forward in the first book. In "Save the Cat", Snyder claimed that every (mainstream) movie ever made can be classified into one of 10 basic genres (a claim that I do not entirely agree with). In "Save the Cat Goes to the Movies", Snyder shows what makes up each of these genres by taking 50 well known (and mostly recent - you've definitely heard of most of them) films and breaking them down into "beats". If you subscribe to Snyder's genre theory and want to use it, then this book is a handy reference. Even if you don't subscribe to his theory, this is an interesting book to flip through. However, "Save the Cat Goes to the Movies" offer no new advice that wasn't given in "Save the Cat", and whereas I read "Save the Cat" from cover to cover, I skipped over a lot of passages in this book.

The Secret to Screenwriting Exposed!

Review Date: 2008-08-19
This book is awesome!

If you want to write a spec script that will get sold then READ THIS BOOK and it's companion (the original Save the Cat book). This book literally blows the roof off the "secrets" behind successful screenwriting.

My collection of screenwriting books is ridiculous. The problem with ALL of those other books (with the exception of those by Cynthia Whitcomb) is that they are by people who have NEVER SOLD A SCRIPT. If you are serious about becoming a SUCCESSFUL screenwriter then you MUST limit ALL of your study to that material by successful screenwriters ONLY. Seems logical and yet there are hundreds of people like Robert McKee who prey upon the hopes and dreams of aspiring screenwriters while sucking their wallets bone dry.

My only issue with the Save the Cat series (actually two issues) is that Blake spilled the beans on the secrets so now everyone will know how to write a successful spec script -- so will there be less of an advantage? (Doubtful because most people are lazy and never write anything...but if everyone used this powerful information then it would flood the Hollywood market with wonderful scripts, thus making it harder for someone to break into the industry.)

My second issue is that in both the Save the Cat books Blake doesn't cover anything about the business. I understand that this book isn't about that. The first book could have included information about breaking in or getting a break.

So...Blake Snyder, if you're reading this: PLEASE MAKE YOUR NEXT BOOK ABOUT HOW TO BREAK INTO THE BUSINESS! PLEASE! You're the only guy who writes USEABLE books on screenwriting that are HONEST and tell the REAL DEAL about how things work. So, if you write another book, please use that same honesty to (1) talk about how Hollywood really works, and (2) how to realistically break into the industry.

Excellent, once again...

Save the Cat has done it once again, but this time on a much higher scale. After a great introduction to the BS2 (Blake Snyder's Beat Sheet) and a few extras, Blake includes a beat-for-beat layout of various films in 10 popular Hollywood genres.

Excellent purchase! I'm convinced these books will give me the knowledge I need to succeed and I recommend 'Save The Cat' for anyone interested in screenwriting.

This book holds the keys that unlock the secrets to screenwriting success. Even though the first book by Blake Snyder was suppose to be the only screenwriting book you'd ever need, this second book uses examples from the movies to explain what needs to happen when in greater detail. A must read for any screenwriter.

Fantastic Storytelling Tool

Review Date: 2008-06-28
You can take classes and buy other books, but the simple technique illustrated in this book is something everyone can use immediately. If you're a writer and sometimes get lost in the plot trap, Snyder's categories like "Dude With A Problem" and "Buddy Love" really helps you cut through the clutter to find the heart of your story. It's a fun read and insightful. It compelled me to go back and watch "Three Days of the Condor" and "All the President's Me." That's a big plus for real movie lovers. Well worth the price.

The book is very well made with great quality paper. There is a little introduction by Bert Stern at the beginning and then all the pictures of the last sitting in chronological order. You can see big images, the ones that Stern thought were the good ones, and then the little ones which are very interesting and funny too. It's an incredible book, you can see a new Marilyn, more mature and prettier on the inside and on the outside.
