Unicorns Books

I really enjoyed this book! I think I enjoyed it more the further into it I got because I began to realize the scope of the book. Also, because it's a series, I wasn't sure how much of the book would be self-contained vs. continuous.
I adored the way the "fantasy world" and how Coville described the various landscapes. Ditto for the creatures of the fantasy world! From both known fantastical creatures (like unicorns) to some new (at least, I've never heard of them before), delightful creatures! I felt as though each character had a distinct personality - even if it took me a little bit to figure them out. And I felt invested in them all, which is a good feat for the book being only 150 pages.
That's really my only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. There's really nothing wrong with the book that I can find to warrant only 4 stars - but for me, I'm used to more in-depth books with great detail to the plots. This was the only thing I wanted more of; I felt there was enough plot and character back-story that the book could have been expanded and delved into further. Though, perhaps that wasn't the author's intent - or it wasn't the intent of this book since it's a series.
However, I would think this a great book to start out for younger readers. And it's a delightful treat for those of us who adore fantasy books to read between tomes!

This is an amazing book it is number 2 in my top five favorite books. And I've read ALOT of books. This is an ideal book for ANYONE who LOVES unicorns, like me! If you get this book for some one be sure to get the second one to. Why? Becuse this one REALY gets you ready for the next one. When I finished it I had really wished that my teacher had the next one, but she didn't. I checked the school libray, but they didn't have it either! I haven't read the next one yet, but I am always keeping my eye out for it and now I've found it here! I hope you've liked my review

Into the Land of the Unicorns is a grate book for people at or abuve a fourth grade reading Levle. Thier is nothing boring about it. I liked it so mutch that after 10 mins after I got it I had like three chapters finished. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I think this book deserves more than a five star rating. You should defently read it.

My kids really enjoyed me reading a chapter from this book every night after their meditation time. I am about to start reading The Song of the Wanderer to them now that we have finished this book.

This story was a wonderful fantasy story for your pre-teen. I think it will touch the young fantazsies of all of us.

Cara's instructions from her grandmother, Ivy, were very clear. Cara was to protect the amulet and to give the unicorn queen a message-one that ultimately means Cara must return to Earth to save her grandmother, known as the Wanderer. And she must return to Luster with Ivy as it is time to heal old wounds.

But returning to Earth is not as easy as it was traveling to Luster. Cara enlists the help of M'Gama (the Geomancer) who will plot Cara's journey. That journey will be arduous and dangerous and it will be accomplished with the help of Cara's many friends from Luster.

Cara successfully returns to Earth but finds Ivy trapped in a mysterious and strange dimension by Beloved, the evil ancestor of Cara. Beloved's only goal is to kill all the unicorns.

The man who is a Hunter and who stalked Cara and her friends in Book I make a return appearance in Song of the Wanderer and the relationship between the Hunter and Cara is settled. There are further secrets revealed about Ivy's past and there are threads left open that will undoubtably be answered in Book III.

Song of the Wanderer is an exciting sequel to Book I and I suggest that the books be read in order. It just makes the experience richer. The plot is more intricate and has more depth in Book II and in effect draws in the reader deeper into the story and helps make a stronger connection to the characters. When the final page was read, I couldn't wait to begin Book III.

After being cast into the mysterious land of Luster not too long ago, twelve-year-old Cara Diana Hunter is finally just moments away from meeting the Unicorn Queen - Arabella Skydancer. During her time in Luster, while Cara has missed Grandmother Morris dearly, she has made friends with mythical creatures of all shapes and sizes - from Thomas the Tinker to Lightfoot the Unicorn, and a squirrel-like creature called Squijum to the half bear/half human Dimblethum, and many, many more. But the time has come to buckle down and complete the mission at hand to save Luster forever as we know it. The Unicorn Queen has reached old age. Two, the companions will have to find a way to make it to the back of the dragon, Ebillan's cave, in an attempt to reach the secret door that bridges the gap between Earth and Luster. And three, with various moments of contact with the wicked Beloved, Cara has no idea what to expect when she takes her first steps back onto Earth's soil. She's also reluctant to find out. As much as she wants to see Grandmother Morris again, she can't help but feel nervous about leaving the quiet, shimmery world of Luster. But, alas, Cara accepts the task, and begins her journey. This time, however, the journey is much more tiring than her first travels through Luster. With a request to pay a visit to the Geomancer, M'Gama, Cara visits the magician of sorts, where she is given provisions and protection to help her during her quest. But her time with M'Gama is not nearly as important as her time with Grimwold, the individual who records all of the Unicorn Chronicles, and has a very special story waiting for Cara and her companions when they arrive at his front door during their journey. With Grimwold and M'Gama's instructions and information close at hand, Cara sets her mind on accomplishing her task, and finding Grandmother Morris. But through battles with vicious delvers, and encounters with enough mythical creatures to make your head spin; Cara becomes to wonder whether she'll be able to accomplish her task in the set amount of days, or if she'll be the ruination of Luster altogether.

I absolutely adored Bruce Coville's INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, which I read a little over a year ago. However, upon beginning SONG OF THE WANDERER, I quickly realized that, as fabulous as its predecessor was, it couldn't hold a candle to the magic and adventure found within the pages of SONG OF THE WANDERER. Coville has returned with the rest of Cara's story, painting Cara, once more, as an understanding, brave, kind individual; whose loyalty to her Grandmother, her friends, and the secret world of Luster is admirable; while her determination to complete any task that may find its way to her is thrilling. The fact that, like with INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, Coville has kept many secondary characters around, and introduced many more only adds to the excitement of the tale, and makes it impossible to stop reading. The Squijum is still one of my favorite characters. His constant ramblings are humorous; while his ability to brighten the mood in any situation makes him a much-needed character. Thomas the Tinker is also a fun individual. The fact that he owns a caravan that can be folded into the size of a piece of paper adds a little magic to the story; while his protectiveness over Cara makes him appear quite similar to a father-like character, whom you can't help but love. I was absolutely ecstatic to see that the faces of Lightfoot the Unicorn and the Dimblethum made appearances throughout SONG OF THE WANDERER, as they are two very important characters whom I certainly wouldn't want to see cut from the story. Coville's descriptions of the vicious delvers, and their surprise attacks send shivers up your spine; while the stories that Grimwold recants regarding Unicorn history are absorbing, and hard to resist. Coville's lyrical writing takes you on a whimsical adventure that won't soon be forgotten!

I thought this book was really great. Bruce Coville did a great job with this book as he did with the last one. Cara is one of my favorite book characters and I just loved all the twists this book had. Thses books are not your average unicorn books! Some good news for anyone who has already read these books and want to know if there's more there is. Book 3 is supposed to come out around April 2008 and called Dark Whispers. There will also be a book 4.

This third installment in the beloved Anne series is one of my favorites. Having just completed two years of teaching in Avonlea, Anne, along with friends Gilbert and Charlie, is ready to leave the Island and make her way to Redmond College. Her four years there offer quaint-seeming insights into college life a hundred years ago. After spending her freshman year in a boarding house, Anne and chums Priscilla, Stella, and Philippa move into a little house called Patty's Place. Even though they are committed to their studies, life is never dull. Anne has no lack of suitors, turning down no fewer than five proposals during the course of the story. And her summers are full of adventure, whether it's back in dear Avonlea or teaching as a country schoolmarm.

I've read Anne of the Island each year I've been in college, and as I finished it this time, I couldn't help but relate to Anne's excitement for the future, mingled with regretful nostalgia about the college life she was leaving behind. College is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Having attended a small Christian university, I relate to Anne's old-fashioned values and the safe, wholesome environment of Redmond.

Montgomery has such a pungent writing voice, alive to the quirks of human nature and the beauties of outdoor nature. She brings spice, optimism, and a touch of cynicism to the story and the characters. Anne's most personal experiences are recounted with poignancy, and are rooted in reality, although they may seem whimsical to modern readers. The ending is sweet and satisfying. I just love Anne, and especially this tale of her college experiences. Don't miss it.

Anne of the Island is the third installment of the smash Anne of Green Gables series. The book begins with Anne leaving for college to further her education the second time. When she arrives, she encounters a slew of minor domestic problems, a new group of friends, and Love. All of which she deals with using that famous atypical personality of a "Kindred spirit"



Although the book deals with more serious subject matter than the preceding books, as a reflection upon Anne's growing older, the book starts with the lighthearted catchy fun that made Anne famous in her prequels. Most of this fun is centered on the Anne's encounters with her roommate cats Rusty, Joseph, and Sarah-Cat. Anne's exclamations of fear at being stalked by the docile house cats is classic Anne and delicious fun.



The Book also dives into more serious matter, with Lets be friends-Lets be more than friends-Lets be friends-I hate you-Marry me! Gilbert abandoning his indecisiveness and aggressively courting Anne. Although this relation is of little interest to male readers, it is made a key plot element, most likely because it is attractive to the books target demographic, pre-teen girls. Luckily, most of the content on Anne's romance does nothing to affect other parts of the story much and as a result are harmless to skip when they become drab.



Anne of the Island is a solid installment in the Anne series. Although not equaling or surpassing Anne of Green Gables, "Of the Island" leaves little to be desired besides not having a near constant usage of the word "eh". If you an Anne fan, pick up her third book. Eh.

The story of Anne continues with this work and the author stays true to her style, story line and character developement. This, like the other books in this series, have a rather timeless nature about them and a comforting charm. The reader, of course, must remember the time they were written and the style and syntax used at that time. From my own point of view, this is great. I enjoy this type of writing and certainly enjoy Ms. Montgomery's story telling abilities. In this work, Anne goes off to Redman College and her adventure continues. Recommend these books for readers of all ages. Wish there were more works out there like it.

"Anne of the Island" is my favorite Anne book, and the last chapters of my copy are worn and torn because I have read it so many times. I loved it as a young girl, and I loved it again when I read it from my college dorm room (in fact, I think it's time for another rereading!). Plus, of course, a college education makes many of the literary references more relevant than they were at age 11.

Anne fans already know how wonderful are these chapters of Anne's life. This book outlines an important epoch in the series and answers the all important question of whether they will or they won't--a turning point on which the next five books hinge. And since you must start at "Anne of Green Gables" to appreciate any of it, this review cannot convince to you read just book three. It is just one more love letter to "Anne of the Island" added to this review panel.

this book never gets old. i've had it for so long and now i'm off to college and i still enjoy reading it cover to cover. anne is a great character, one who is easy to love and who explains herself well. the other characters are also quirky. something about this book is very universal, which i think explains why even in this century i still find myself being able to relate to Anne. the plot, while essentially a love story, is not overly sappy. and while most people would probably expect the ending, the twists and turns throughout the novel keep you entertained and engaged.

The book arrived in great time and is another classic of this famous and amazing author. It is all that was expected and I highly recommend it to anyone who is now, a C. S. Lewis fan or will be upon reading any of his works. Thanks gain to Amazon for another honest and quick transaction. Gary Krei

The Essay "The Inner Ring" moved my youngest daughter from the margins of middle school to its social center. Six years ago when she was in the sixth grade, we talked several times about a group of three girls that were the most popular in her school. Because she was so curious about the subject, I read her "The Inner Ring." She loved it. She asked many good questions, related the essay to her situation, and to her friends. By the middle of her seventh grade year, the group had expanded to six and because four of the six members of the group had siblings in the high school, the "six pack" was the subject of high school gossip in addition to being the coolest clique in the middle school. My wife believes that in reading "The Inner Ring" to mathematically minded Lisa, I gave her the rules she needed to become a permanent member of a group who all were starters on at least one sports team and continued to be close friends in high school.

I agree that this collection is often overlooked when considering the best works of CS Lewis. Among the essays, my personal favorites are Weight of Glory and Transposition. I highly recommend this book.

This book is actually a collection of essays. Lewis addresses various things such as, the glory of man as being a reflection of the glory of God, why he is not a pacifist (where he gives some pretty strong moral, biblical, and sensible arguments), speaking in tongues and various spiritual gifts (moreso on their implication, not on the technicality of each or what exactly each gift is), what he calls "is theology poetry" (or in other words, do we believe in theology just because the idea of a cosmic drama appeals to us), the affects of peer pressure and the gradual degradation of one's inner principles and also its positive affects when one surrounds him/herself with Christians, and forgiveness.

Overall a very enlightening read, in which many issues that are not commonly talked about are given attention. Not very long either, but packed full of insight.

There is a jacket blurb on The Weight of Glory from John Updike, who comments on both the comfort and pleasure afforded by Lewis. Neither should be underestimated. This is great devotional writing but it is also great writing, writing that is typified by Lewis' ability to deal with the weightiest of matters with a light touch.

It is a truism that our faith is reinforced whenever we see it embraced by great minds. Samuel Johnson believed that and it is interesting that Lewis often turns to Johnson for such reinforcement, as we turn to Lewis--one of the indisputably great intellectuals of the twentieth century. Part of that greatness comes from the stark clarity with which Lewis sees important matters. That makes his work accessible; it does not make it simplistic.

All of the lay sermons in this volume are trenchant, though 'The Weight of Glory' and 'Learning in War-Time' are exceptional. I especially like 'Is Theology Poetry?' and 'Membership' and find 'Why I Am Not a Pacifist' of particular interest and importance these days.

This is a book to be read, embraced, and shared.

Wonderful book full of beautiful, mystical, magical photographs. Robert Vavra is one of the best in the business!

Remember when you believed in unicorns? This book is filled with such beautiful photography that you will forget you were told not to believe.

I have always appreciated Robert Vavra from the time I was first introduced to his art. But this particular book I have longed for about 23 years.
Beautiful, fanciful, and "fact"-filled book about a mythical noble creature that is loved so much, that few would dispute his existence.
Photos, illustrations and notes on each well-known type of unicorn is unsurpassed!

I first encountered this book when I was very young. I asked my local library to buy it and they did; and I kept checking it out again and again. Owning this book now is like looking back into my own childhood, at the dreams and the wonder I had for the world. It's beautiful pictures and startling art has never faded for me over time.

This gorgeous book is one of the finest unicorn books I own. It has great pictures and lots of unicorn details and a unicorn searching guide. It is worth buying if you like unicorns or photography. It is worth getting Unicorn of Kilimanjaro or the Calendar if you can find them as well. It is on my list of favorite all time books, and i see a lot of them as i work at a bookstore. By this if you or someone you love likes unicorns and give the gift of magic.

I am now almost done with college and have just rediscovered this series which was my favorite to read as a child and continues to be to this day. These books are filled with adventure, mystery, magic, love, strength, and beauty. You can't help but be swept away by your imagination as you read these books. While reading about all that these characters endure, attempt, fail, and accomplish you can't help but share their adventures. This series is one that people of any age can enjoy.

I wanted to be just like Sheila when I grew up. I even listened to a few Bon Jovi songs because of her (I was 8 when these books came out). I just recently figured out the name of the books (I had forgotten them) and now i'm trying to find them again to reread them. I still remember the book cover illustrations too!

This series is the magnificent books that everyone MUST SEE! I am now currently working but I still miss this series a lot since I read them when I am 10 years old. I'm glad I can finally buy the series. Miss them a lot.

At the ages of 7-9, I was a very sick little girl. After coming home from getting stuck by needles at the doctor's office, my mom bought me this book. I think I finished the book in just under 2 days. I just couldn't put it down! It has everything; adventure, romance, drama, magic, and of course... unicorns! What an escape for anyone with an active imagination! This was a dose of girl-power and courage I really needed. As an adult, there are still lessons I can use in my grown up life. In a way I STILL want to be Sheila! I was lucky enough to obtain all 6 books. I urge everyone to do the same... it's worth every penny!

I love these Unicorn cards & their messages. There are several with more than a single Unicorn & a few of Pegasus--who is my totem animal. There were some startling & beautiful pictures. I plan to give a set to a male friend who likes Unicorns & am glad that they represent the Unicorn as a strong animal. I gave him Doreen's Archangel cards last year. I have all of Doreen's decks & use them for morning devotions. They really start my day off in a blessed way.

I use Oracle Cards for professional readings and I love this deck. The cards are beautiful to look at and suitable as gifts for children. The accompanying guide book is easy to read and filled with positive and uplifting messages. If you like the idea of magical enchantment and are in sync with your own Inner Child, you will instantly form a connection with this deck.

I bought this because: 1) I like Doreen Virtue's material 2) I used to think about unicorns a lot as a young child. I think I might have either played with them or imagined that I did. 3) These card decks are fun. They give the child within you a chance to play, and 4) "Toys" like this can provide insite. 5) They certainly provide positive experiences.

As a child I absolutely LOVED unicorns and Pegasis, the winged horse. Both the unicorns and Pegasis were always all white. Even now, I have a poster size picture of Pegasis in my office. He is running in the sand and along the beach, while the ocean waves are breaking on the shore. Wings are up and open and she's ready to fly. And there's a place for me, on her back.

This is a 44-card deck and guidebook. The guidebook gives you the steps: 1) Prepare the deck, by holding the cards and tapping away the old energy 2) shuffle them 3) ask a question 4) lay out cards and read them.

Let's say you are guided to pick out 3 cards, and they are:
1) "One Step at a Time"--"Lots of little steps make big dreams come true"
2)"Decide"--"It's Time to clearly make a decision about what you want"
3)"Talk About Your Feelings"--"Tell a friend how you feel"

OK, so now you go to the book and look up each of these cards for additional guidance. #2, above "Decision" talks about being at a time of crossroads in your life, where you could go in a few different directions and you need to make a decision. Then it suggests how you might ask friends, ask angels for help, etc.

By the way, the art work on both sides of each card is very pretty. A standard picture of a white unicorn is on all cards. The other side contains an individual picture with the words as shown above.

Of course, you have to decide if there is an "answer" which means something to you. Then you have to decide how that "answer" relates to you and what you are or are not doing in your life.

I am a fan of Doreen Virtue and possess almost all of her oracle decks... they are all unique with great, uplifting messages, and the art work is simply wonderful. This deck does not disappoint.

This deck gets five stars for several reasons. First of all, the cards are very beautiful. The cards are gilded on the sides, the back of the cards depict a unicorn with long flowing hair, and the layout for the front of the cards is very appealing. Each card depicts a unicorn on it, of course, though some are with humans, animals, water, clouds, etc.

This is a very fluffy card deck, so to say. There are no dark cards in here as the goal of it is positivity. Also, while this deck is fine for adults, it is also perfect for children. In fact, out of all of Doreen Virtue's Oracle Card Decks, this one is the best for children as there aren't any themes that are specifically for adults (such as issues involving careers, etc) and there are many pictures that depict unicorns in a cute way, such as the "Curiosity" card which depicts a kitten rapidly interested in the unicorn's shining horn. If you are someone who is trying to introduce a child into the realm of reading Tarot/Oracle cards, this deck is wonderful as a starter.

While this deck is excellent for children, it also works very well for adults as well. For anyone seeking cards that will give a good source of inspiration, these cards work very well. Also, the themes of the cards are more broad, therefore making these cards great for beginners.

I have always received accurate readings from using these cards and the only reason why I don't use them that often for readings is because I always get so distracted by how beautiful the pictures are. So even of you are not into reading cards, this deck makes a great collector's item.

This story is not so much about laughter as it is about small people caring about saving laughter in certain parts of the world when the Shell of Laughter is stolen by an evil spirit named Killjoy Crosspatch.

The fairies learn what laughter is made of including eighteen tickle feathers, the sound of puppies barking, a two-part joke, Christmas snow, and a few other things. They also learn how laughter is spread around the world and that we must have some sorrow as a balance in the world in order to know what laughter and happiness are.

I like the flow and length of this book because it held my kids' interest and was a quick two-night bedtime read. My son is four and liked the story as much as my daughter, six. I have read them the first two books in this series. My son wanted to know if the brownies were going to get to lead some of the adventures instead of just helping the fairies. I won't be telling him that it looks like that isn't going to happen since this is The "Fairy" Chronicles because I want him to continue to enjoy the stories..

This is a good Smile and Feel-Good book and we will be reading it again. I recommend it for kids of all ages.

The leprechaun in this story might make you laugh. If he doesn't, Snickers the hedgehog will. You might also get a kick out of the things laughter is made of, I did. All of these fun things are inside the shell of laughter and mix themselves up in correct proportions to produce laughter. An elf then spreads the laughter over the world using the winds of the world. And because he does this, we can all have a laugh. Great story!

I baught these books for my daughter who just learned to read she will be in first grade this year and just loves fairies. She loves these books as well as drawing and pretending shes the characters in the stories. I would highly recommend it to any one whose child can read at least at a 2nd grade level and loves fairies and using their imagination.

These are not the fairies of yesteryear. Nor are they ultra-mod or futuristic. Creative use of characters, good writing and a nice flow of events make this an enjoyable book. Recommended.

Thistle and the Shell of Laughter is a lovely fairytale story about fairies, but it is also a tale of the need for balance in our world. Two concepts are prominent in this book. First, that tears and laughter must both exist and second, that without sorrow we wouldn't know what happiness was. There is also a clever balance of characters in this book, real balancing fantasy (hedgehog, elk, rabbit, tortoise, bird vs. unicorns, elf, gnome, witch, fairies). The Stone of Tears balances the Shell of Laughter. The elf twins balance each other (Staid vs. Blithe).

Many fairytales don't present their lessons and themes as well as this one does. I was impressed when I read the second book in this series by how small the Web of Dreams was. I am even more impressed with this story because it is extremely clever. I don't believe a child will be able to pinpoint the theme, but will enjoy the story. As an adult reader, I find myself reminiscing about the fairytales I read as a child because this is a new version of some of those classic and clever stories.

THis is a beautifullly designed book, with a very cute story. My Granddaughter loves books and unicorns, so it is just right for her. Actually I love it for myself!

All enjoy a feast of cookies, cakes, and sundaes, but it is soon time for Abigail to return home upon her unicorn steed, Lord William.

The story is one that will appeal to young girls, with it's magical creatures and a girl who yearns to be a princess. It's the wonderful illustrations by Linda Crockett, however, that make this a true winner, to be enjoyed by children and parents alike.

This book is a wonderful story of a little girl whose imagination whisks her away to a fantasy land full of adventure and promise. The illistrations are terrific and full of detail. My grandaughters keep asking me to read it againg and again to them at night. The middle grandaughter,(5) "reads" it to her favorite stuffed animals. Exit Unicorns was recommended by an online group, and I thought I'd give it a try. WOW! I couldn't believe this was Ms. Brandner's first novel! She has a real gift for weaving history through the story in a way that puts the reader right in the middle of it all.

A gripping tale of love, joy, and heartbreak that will leave you wanting more of the characters. Luckily, the sequel, Mermaid in a Bowl of Tears, has just been released and it is, if possible, even better than this one. Buy them both - once you've finished Exit Unicorns, you won't want to wait to keep on with the story!

Can't believe I didn't do this sooner. I read it 2 years ago and have been chomping at the bit for the sequal (Mermaid in a Bowl of Tears) which just came out. Exit Unicorns is one of those stories that you "live" for the duration of your read. It's such a loss when it's over and I missed the characters as though they were absent friends of mine. It's a healthy dose of history cleverely woven throughout an enthralling story that will capture your heart and thoughts for a long time! NOTE that anyone who has read it so far has given it 5 stars!

I knew very little about Ireland and the troubles, the history which set it all in place and the impact on the Irish people. Like Diana Gabaldon's Outlander, Exit Unicorns presented with me characters realistic enough to take up residence in my heart, and inspired me to learn more about the world my new friends `Casey, Pamela, Jamie and Pat' live in, which is relevant to the events in this part of the world today. Each re-read provides `aha' moments relating to both the political maneuverings and personal relationships in the story. Mermaid in Bowl of tears cannot come soon enough.

For the first time in 30 years of reading I finished a book, walked to my computer and spent hours reading more about a time, a place and a people. That is the beauty of this book. Ms. Brandner tugs on your heart and soul as she tells this story with characters you'll feel you know personally, a history that should never be forgotten and some of the most beautiful writing you'll ever experience. Regardless of your politics or heritage, this book will fulfill all the reasons that you enjoy reading.

The contrast of these wonderful characters propels the one story forward from many interesting directions - book-smart and street-smart, rich and poor, old and young, Irish and American. Regardless, the dreams of freedom and equality remain the same. This is a story of passion and loyalty to one another, to ones heritage and to a country.
