I absolutly adored this book, and I can't come up with enough good things to say about it. It's great for absolutly any age (I'm 26) and I read the first three books in two days.

Wholeheartedly reccomended for girls, who will find a near perfect heroine and role model in Emma.

If you want to read "Dragon's Breath" I suggest you read "The Frog Princess" first so you can understand it better. In "Dragon's Breath" Emma and Eadric help Emma's Aunt Grassina, the current 'Green Wtich', turn her true love, Haywood, back into a person from a otter. After overhearing a wizard talking to the soul of her grandmother, who turned Haywood into an otter in the first place, Emma learns the things needed to turn him back. Hearing this she sets off to find the ingreddients with Eadric by her side. They find many weird 'things' along the way including dragons witch makes Emma's magic stronger. The neighboring kingdom chose this miment to attack. With Grassina distracted and Emma's magic out of controll it looks like Emma's father's army is going to lose untill something very strange happenes......

(SPOILER ALERT)

On their 5th adventure to find the seven gems of Deltora Lief, Barda and Jasmine must journey to the frightening Dread Mountain. When they find Kin on their way their (story-book characters long thought to be extinct) they meet a Kin called Prin, the only child born since the Kin moved from Dread Mountain. When Prin follows them to the mountain, they must defend her, as well as themselves from the Dread Gnomes and their leader the giant toad: Gellik.

In my opinion this is the best book of the series, it is very interesting and exciting. We learn what poison the Grey Guards 'blisters' are from and a mysterious grave and a message written in blood add to the mystery of the book.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. You really should read it,infact I bet you would enjoy it to! If you do read this book it will probabably take some time to read but, if you read the whole entire book you will be dying to read it again. Also, you need to tell all your freinds how good it is and I bet they would like to read it to!

Books Books Books. You are always forced to read stupid books for Summer reading. I begged not to have to read them and so the choice was given if I could find a book in the next week to read I didn't have to do summer reading. After searching without success I found a book to replace Summer reading that was the newest of The Deltora Quests at the time. Like the four books before this book cast it's spell and I could not put it down out of interest. It is not exceptional, not the most action packed, not the most romantic and certainly not having the best monsters but I will always consider it my jewel. I'd take Gellick over the Hoboken Chicken any day! That poisin spitting frog on the front, he will set you free.

The best book in the series!

As they travel to Dread Mountain, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine find a clear spring. But an ominous sign makes them unsure. They are thirsty, and out of water. They drink, and later discover the entire truth of Dreaming Spring. They also meet the Kin, a fabled creature thought to be extinct. The Kin take them to the mountain, but their only young follows. Can they care for her, and themselves, too? She proves to be helpful, and as they learn about what happened on the mountain, they are imprisoned by the Dread Gnomes, Gnomes that live on the Mountain, under the rule of a toad-like creature, Gellick. The fifth gem, the emerald, is inbedded in his brow.

The first part of this all-in-one volume is The Talman, the Holy Book of the alien Drac race. The Talman is the premise for the rest of the three novels that follow in the volume. I consider scripture to be inspired search for truth, including the true definition of the relationship between man (or Drac, in this case) and God (or other Higher Power). While reading The Talman, I had the distinct feeling that I was reading real scripture disguised as fictional scripture. Mr. Longyear's insight was thought-provoking as well as entertaining. The series is a worthy entry among the classics dealing with the problem of the relationship between theology/spirituality and science, such as James Blish's A Case of Conscience and Robert Sawyer's Calculating God.

Rumor has it the tenitive title for this book was "Enemy Mine Omnibus", but in the long run I'm glad they didn't call it that.

"The Enemy Papers" is a collection of stories having to do with the war between the Dracs and Humans. The collection starts with an "abridged" version of the Draconian Talman or holy book.

A revised/extended author's addition of "Enemy Mine" comes next in line with contains a closer look at Shigan and Davidage's relationship and, later, the relationship Davidage has with the Jeriba family.

"The Tomorrow Testement" is the story of a human female soldier who gets taken to the Dracon as a POW and how she caught the eye of a leading Draconian offical and helped bring an end to the war. Bear this in mind; "Enemy Mine" and "Tomorrow Testement" occur at the same time.

"The Last Enemy" takes place around 30 years after "Enemy Mine", only this time from the point of view of a Draconian terrorist living on the planet that started the entire war. This unique view into the after effects of the peace treaty and the universal mindset of a war weary soldier is a nice addition to this collection.

The collection is completed with a set of essays about writing alien languages, Longyear's experiences writing the stories and a small Drac/English-English/Drac dictionary for those of us who are obsessed with these stories. Longyear does admite that, with a little persuassion, he might continue the series, complete the Talman and lenghten the dictionary.

With a little persuassion.

More timely than ever.

The Enemy Papers is a compilation that includes three novels, Enemy Mine, The Tomorrow Testament and The Last Enemy, as well as The Talman, an alien Bible. Barry Longyear's trilogy of the war between humans and the alien Dracs was always a fantastic story, philosophically deep while entertaining to read, but today the story is even more timely. In this world of renewed terrorist activity and threat of war, a well-thought-out treatise of unrequited hate, fierce nationalism and the horrors of war reads like a world relations primer. The issues of how to establish and keep peace are dealt with honestly and with human (and alien) nature always considered. Nothing is easy, and nothing is straightforward. Longyear is a spectacular writer and this is one of his best. I guarantee that the ending to the last novel will knock your socks off, whether you are wearing socks or not. I promise. Read this book, it will engrave itself on your soul.

I just finished reading the Everworld books 1-3. They are really good books. I want everyone to know that basic out line of these books. In the beginning these 5 people are just reagular teenagers. Then, they get dragged into another world. When they sleep they cross over back into their world and memorys from what happened while they were in Everworld comes flooding back. The books go on to tell what types of adventures they go through and how they get through them. There are about 12 or 13 books in all. I hope you read them! They are awsome!

I think everyone is different in their own ways but not everyone/anyone is a real witch like Senna. I like April's point of view the best so far. I just ordered the 4th book and hope to order the rest very soon.

I LOVE all ever world books! They are my favorite besides Harry Potter. Everworld books arn't about boring topics like math and things like that! They are about real people that are sucked out of this universe and into Everworld where there are dragons, wolves the size of bus's and angry gods who kill like its a sport! There interesting and hold my attention to the point where it's nearly impossable to but the book down. As you can seei feel very pationit about these books and would recomend them to anyone who likes fantasy books.

I ecspecially liked how it's written from April's point of veiw. I love the fact that K.A. Applegate involves character's that are well know such as Merlin and hisorical characters like the Vikings and the Aztecs. She has added her own little twists to these characters. I can't wait to read Realm of the Reaper!

take off with Basil to the utopia of Helios, where your friend, the girl genius, gives you a ride on her pet pteranodon and demonstrates physics based on precise musical melodies. A great book to inspire reluctant readers to read on...and reluctant writers to create.

This book is the first in what is so far a series of two. I hope Mr Miller doesn't take too long with a next installment.

"Peace Through World Domination!" The comics parrot many a dictator and well-intentioned freedom fighter, while making us laugh. That is the joy of Attack of the Volcano Monkeys.

Wiley Miller's "Non Sequitur" is one of my favorite comics as it segues from mundane to otherworldly each weekend in the Sunday comics. There, Lucille, Beatrice Pterosaur, and Basil Pepperell have adventures-and I want to tag along. Their worlds make sense as they mirror portions of our own. They come closest to the 1960s political Pogo that I can find. Besides, I enjoy Maine accents and lighthouses. In these monkeyshines, Basil returns home from his last crusade to leave immediately on another. He must save little Louise from forbidden Monkey Island, which is not an island l, but a ship that some government has disguised as an island with which to control its indigenous monkey nations. HG Wells, Tarzan, and Star Trek would like a word with that government.

Professor McGookin and his magic round submarine help Louise, Basil, and his resistance fighter monkey-friend Rathbone (Basil...Rathbone, a Holmesian nod) to defeat a dictator and restore liberty to intelligent monkeys. Evil Doctor Von Rottweil (vicious like the dog), by turns, saves Basil's life and is imprisoned by the moneys he has experimented on, but escapes to "evil-ize" something else in the future. This is "HMS Pinafore" meets "The Producers" in "Springtime for Hitler in Germany." It makes me laugh while I think, but is a rollicking good time.

Additional animals play major parts in this story. Bug-eyed owls hunt children and monkeys, but are swept from the sky by Beatrice Pterosaur. Illustrations of this and other events swim around and behind the text to comprise a jaunty nautical reading experience.

In the end, children are smart, democratic revolution can overthrow dictatorship and false idols, and we are not monkeys to be tricked. Moral character lives in the heroes and even its villains. Basil upholds freedom and honor, encourages compassion towards all, and provides an extraordinary good time all at once.

Armchair Interviews says: Readers of all ages will enjoy Attack of the Volcano Monkeys.

This is the best of the series, but I suggest that you read the "Dragons in our Midst" books first. This book ties all of the lose threads together. As you read things click. It keeps you reading, a great page turner. I recommend this book to everyone who likes young adult books. Very well done and hooks well into the bible and doesn't sound cheesy like the others. A friend of mine lent me this book after he finished it. Truthfully, I was skeptical. I'm a fantasy novel/game type of person, but it seems that a lot of fantasy novels are like sci-fi, a good book is one in a thousand.

Heres the one in the thousand. Bryan Davis masterfully wrote this book, with a strong storyline, that follows multiple plots, and still keeping interest, and not getting jumbled together.

I couldn't put this down. It was almost the same as when "Deathly Hallows" came out after a 3 year wait.

I look forward to reading more Bryan Davis novels, and I doubt he will let me down, with his writing prowess.

Bryan Davis seamlessly weaves high adventure within the Biblical timeline!

This was my first novel of Mr. Davis's. As I had heard that Eye of the Oracle was actually a prequel of his earlier series, Dragons in the Midst I decided to start with it. I was immediately impressed to find several things I really love in a good novel. 1.) being thrown into the action quickly--Eye of the ORacle sets us smack down in the middle of a dragon attack upon a villianess you'll not soon forget!
2.) Superb writing--Mr. Davis's prose flows as smoothly as Bing Crosby singing Silent Night.
3.) The unexpected--Eye of the Oracle seamlessly weaves a tale of dragon heroism into the Biblical narrative. We begin just before the flood with the Ark in preparation for its fateful journey upon the waters of God's judgment. In the midst of this, Mr. Davis blends the familiar biblical persons with many we've not heard of before. New demons, Nephilim, Anakim giants, are all thrown into this epic brew with characters from the King Authur Legend as time progresses in the story. DAvis throws twists at us we would never expect, like Merlin as a prophet of God...WOW!
It all boils down to marvelous storytelling and the kind of heroes you'd be proud to sit down and share night after night reading with your own children. Eye of the ORacle delivers on every level, folks and I for one have been transformed into a FAN!--James Somers: author, The Chronicles of Soone.

As I closed the last page (my third time reading it through, by the way.) just the other day I let out a long hard sigh. Something about Eye of the Oracle really gets me thinking. The amazing power of God, and how he can take such small events, and what seems like such insignifacant people and things, and turn it all out for his good, is awe inspiring. And that is what Eye of the Oracle did to me. And there is one part in the book that I especially enjoyed, when God opens Sapphira Adi's (one of the main characters) heart and shows her his mercy and love. It was beautiful. Just absolutly beautiful!
The book starts with the Flood (Noah and the Ark), goes to the Tower of Babel, then to the era of King Arthur until finally it reaches modern day. So much happens in those pages, but it's most certainly not your normal, run-of-the-mill christian fantasy book, it's so unusual, and I think that's whay makes it so wonderful to me. I've never read a fantasy (or any other fiction for that matter!) book like it. It brought me along with it, and I understood the characters, and what they were feeling and what they were going through. I felt their pain, joy and sorrow. And I loved them all for it. And the depth of the writing, it's spectacular!
People kind of raise an eyebrow at me when I say that the characters in books are some of my favorite friends, but it's true. And especially with Eye of the Oracle. Please read it. You wont' regret it!!

This is a far ranging collection of stories from Ford. I liked the longer more than the shorter ones. What I really liked was his comments following each of the stories. Fortunately, they did follow rather than precede them. I really disliked Michael Swanwick's comments being used as an introduction. It should have been placed at the end.

There are three reasons I rarely compare one writer's style with that of other writers: 1. My memory isn't all that great anymore. 2. I'm too lazy to re-read to see if what memory I have left is accurate. 3. Some reviewers are more interested in showing off than making valid comparisons. My memory and laziness keep me from being tempted to show my ignorance.

Let me simply say that Jeffrey Ford writes like someone I would like to read again. And I will!

I've only read THE FANTASY WRITER'S ASSISTANT from this collection so far, but it was a weird, twisted and fun take on plain old heroic fantasy told in a literate way. That's what I liked most-- Ford's refusal to write stuffy fiction despite his intellectual ability to do so. Add to that an approach to the idea that involves writers themselves, and you've got potential for a cult book here. I've bought all five of his books that I could find, and have plans to read them.

Sometimes absurdist, sometimes surrealistic or bleakly humorours but always humane and profound,
this short stories are great examples of contemporary fantastical fiction.

This will forever be one of my all time favorite books. I will lend this to my close friends, loved ones, and one day read to my children before bed. This is the type of book that makes you want to be a writer. Each short story is better than the last. His writing is so incredible that it would be wrong to describe him by comparing to others. But, if you need a reference, Jorge Luis Borges and Steven Millhauser tap into the same realm of great imagry and imagination. Plus, after each story Ford reveals his inspirations, and techniques (basically the behind the scene story).
It's a must have book.

Its a sad commentary that Jeffrey Fords work is not in major bookstores. I know because I've looked. I realize they only keep newer titles, unless a particular writer or work has had much success. But still.

Reading Exo-skeleto town in FWA (the first one I read), I thought, Wow. This is probably the best story in this book. Because its so good that a writer cant possibly keep up this level of quality. And usually there are maybe two or three gems in a short story collections; the rest is garbage.

Then I read Fantasy writers assistant. And was proven wrong. Not only is FWA better than exo town, but each subsequent story I read gets better and better. I can say besides maybe the work of Chuck Beaumont, and a Joe Lansdale, I've never read a guy who packs this much quality into each and every short story.

Cheers Jeff...

I read the original three volumes and believed that the author was done, because I never saw another volume. Just recently I realized I had missed four volumes!!! I could not put them down. Characters are believable with battle scenes that remind me of Viet Nam. I enjoy the military very much, recognizing all the elements in the Hordes versus Keane. I only wished that he would spell Civil War names correctly, JEB Stuart and not JEB Stewart. I still enjoy this series very much and I am glad that it continues.

Another solid book in a great series!

This book picks up right where the last one left off. There is a 30 day lull in the battle with the Merki due to the assasination of the Merki leader. The Merki have a ceremonial 30 days of mourning when the leader dies.

During this time, the humans begin there final withdrawal and buildup. They leave behine a scorched earth. The Merki do not know how to handle an enemy that will not fight in the open. There is no honor in this battle. They look forward to a single big confrontation and swift decisive end.

The humans have several tricks up their sleeves, including traps, guerilla warfare and deception.... And as usual, new surprising weapons.

This is an excellent addition to the series. The end of the book opens a new chapter for the next book. I hope we can find out more information about the technology and history of the "ancients"....

Scorched Earth.

Four amazing books so far. Or, if you prefer (As I do), one very long book, a sort of "War and Peace" of the sci-fi genre. No matter how you look at it, this developing tale by Forstchen only gets better. He is not afraid to kill off some of his main characters to add realism to the story, and he is not afraid to surprise the reader with tactics that are rather unexpected. "Fateful Lightning" presents a massive migration of Rus toward the land of Roum, pursued by the relentless Merki hordes. The humans will burn the land behind them, poisoning wells and setting traps for their foes, so that by the time of their final confrontation we can realistically see that the Merki, in spite of their great superiority in numbers, are overextended and will not be able to withstand a severe blow from the humans. The humans are at the end of their rope, too, but one of the most endearing characters in the series will have a shot at saving his people by refusing to obey orders. And Muzta, one of my favorite characters, will also have a chance to save his own people. Again, the battles are almost unforgettable: the horror of war, the worst of men, and the most noble in them is presented by Forstchen in a gripping, spectacular way. Hawthorne becomes a sort of Dark angel of the battlefield, and the Roman Marcus figures as a key participant by now. Four out of four. And it only gets better.

Yet again, another fiver for the series...

Wow, this is the series that just keeps on going and going. Excellent. This was perhaps the best one I've read so far next to Rally Cry. Again, there's that great sense of dread and forboding on the humans' part, as they attempt to fight off the ever encroaching Merki Hordes, now, of course, led by that rat Tamuka. The funeral of Jubadi was sickening... I loved it. Showalter's and his Cavalry's final, desparate charge into the Merki ranks was glorious. John Mina was a total nutball, picking on ol' Fergie like that. Oh, and I'm glad Ferguson, my favorite character in the series, got the girl. He deserves her. The Battle of Hispania was marvelous, so many troops in a battle of annihilation, fighting for their lives against vicious alien monsters, it filled you with pride for being human. Mutza's role in the whole story was satisfying-- I always liked him for some reason, even when he was attempting to destroy the old 35th. At least he had that glimmering of doubt, of whether or not fighting the humans was such a good idea, something which Tamuka did not. Bullfinch's endeavors, however, were very underexplored. I would've liked to see more of his liberation of the Cartha. Young Gregory's recitation of Shakespeare's Henry V-- "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers..."-- was very emotional and moving. And, yes, the editing is very, very bad here, as it is in the other Lost Regiment novels, but it did not take away from this rich story. Fateful Lightning is a masterful end to the Merki War, a stupendous entry in the Lost Regiment series, and a true gem in the realm of science-fiction.

Well worth reading, but not as coherent as "Inda"

I love many things about this book; the world-building is awesome, the characters are interesting and complex, the writing flows and is never overwrought, and the details of life (whether at sea or in a stable) seem genuine. In all these ways the book is much like Inda, the prequel. However, "The Fox" covers a much greater physical area, as Inda and his crew sail around the main continent more than once, spend years prepping for the future, etc, and the storyline splits to follow not only Inda's experiences, but the events back at home and eventually various groups of Inda's crew as they pursue their individual goals.

This complexity is not necessarily a problem, although there are a few times when it seems like Sherwood might have spent a bit more time pondering her plot. There's one chapter in which, paragraph by paragraph the action switches between Inda in a sea battle and Evred at his station in the north... it works, but it struck me as odd and a little forced.

We finally learn a great deal about the mysterious and menacing Venn, a culture that seems to be somewhat modelled on the Vikings, complete with the concept of a final day of judgement. The more we learn about the Venn the more interesting they become, but unfortunately a lot of the Venn material is an overload of unfamiliar Venn jargon and brief conversations that seem obscure.

I did indeed enjoy this read, lest there be doubt, but I found myself more and more satisfied by the segments taking place in Iasca Leror and focusing on the culture and conflicts that we learned about in the first book, and less so by the adventures of Inda's pirates, as their sections seemed not quite as grounded in the detail of daily life.

As besotted as I was once I'd finished Inda, I was even worse after reading The Fox. Virtually every major character's fate is up in the air, but not contrivedly so. I never had the feeling that Smith was creating difficulties just to string the story along: okay, got through that, now what emotional crises and physical perils can we inflict upon so-and-so in this chapter? Each event was solidly based upon and absolutely consistent with those that came before.
It's going to be a loooong several months until the third and final book in the series comes out this summer. It's likely that characters I've come to care about to a ridiculous degree will suffer and die, and hearts will be broken (mine included); I can't wait!

Love it!

This story is amazing I love the richness and depth, and especially the complexity of Sherwood Smith's characters. Inda and The Fox are two of my favorite books ever, and for someone who reads as much as I do that says alot. If you are looking for a great book I highly recommend this series!

Simply and purely, Sherwood Smith writes excellent books.

The storyline of "The Fox" began with "Inda", and here Smith gives us more of the same: a deeply and thoroughly built world, rousing action, and characters that are real, human and humane, people that you can care deeply about. Despite the complexity of the world, the quick pace, it is easy to keep up, and I don't find myself preferring any story line over the other - a rarity for me. Excellently done, and I can't wait for the last in the series.

I am not very good at writing reviews, and the other reviews seem to have pretty much said everything that needs to be said. On the other hand, one can never sing too few praises for Sherwood Smith. =)
If you thought her YA (Crown Duel) was good - just wait till you get your hands on Inda and The Fox! I would like to reiterate the fact that despite what Amazon claims, this book is ADULT. It is classified as ADULT by EVERYONE, even the AUTHOR HERSELF, except for Amazon. I'm not exactly sure how to fix that, but I am very worried that some unsuspecting, overprotective parent will buy this book for their younger teen then write a scathing book review all because Amazon is too dumb to label their products correctly.
This book DOES have some sex but keep in mind it's all tastefully implied - never described. Parents can feel safe letting their teens read this.
However, you must understand that sex does not an adult novel make. This book is much too complicated and multi-levelled for the average younger teen to comprehend, and as such should be labelled as adult so that people will realize this is a serious book - it's not meant for little kids. It's not graphic or anything, but most kids would get confused.

Amazon's mistakes aside, this is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to older teens and adults who enjoy fantasy - and even those who don't. It's the type of book you can't put down until you're finished. I know I didn't!!

I picked this book out of the new section at the local library having never read anything by Ms. Meyers. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the adventures of Ann Marie. I was a little bit disappointed with the resolution or lack thereof, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Not a run of the mill romance novel. The people seem real and the things that happen to them are the same as you would expect in real life. No kings, far away places, riches or fancy lifstyles. Keeps you guessing -- makes it hard to put down.

Invited to a 50's party, a young woman begins a fantastic journey with the purchase of a prom dress from a second hand store. Evicted and unemployed, finding a new apartment opens the door for a wide cast of characters to become involved. There's the almost blind retired circus performer that can still read tea leaves, the telephone repairman and the Viet Nam veteran. This is another wonderful story that will keep you spell bound and not want to put it down as the young woman searches for the story behind the dress.

This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read! I couldn't put it down and had to read it all in one sitting! The characters are so down-to-earth and "normal" that you can identify each one with someone you know! This book inspires you to wonder that there truly may be more to this world than is physically apparent. Definitely a thought-provoking story. GREAT!
