Quick Solutions With Dreamweaver
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-04
As someone who has been handed an existing Dreamweaver website to administer, I found this book to be extremely useful. Knowing nothing about the software, I was able to reference the book to quickly fix problems and carry out updates. To really use Dreamweaver a proper tutorial would be required, which this is not. It's targeted at those who need to work with Dreamweaver without a great deal of background knowledge and succeeds 100%.

A Responsible Look at the Influence of Technology
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-07
Many times writers will fail to address or recognize the potentail of hypertext as a medium, or will discuss virtual reality in some niavely science-fictioness manner. Peter Lunenfeld embraces these issues and more in a way that is hard to accomplish without chronological distance. Without attempts at all-encompassing rhetoric, he makes strong, undeniable observations of where our culture is, with reference to the digital media that encompass it.

Particularly exciting (for me) is the point that virtual reality is only significantly present as an "object to think with", a sort of prophetic idea which influenced society greatly without ever being fully acheived. Its a more productive look in the mirror instead of the usual look to the supposed future.

Important distinctions are made between traditional chemical photography and digital photography, as well as between the telephone and the world wide web. Also very interresting is the discouse on digital media's influence on architecture, with several eye-opening examples.

Obviously I was most intrigued by the discussions on media, but there are two more sections, one on cultures, the other on makers. The culture part focuses on "technocultures", the demo, and the aesthetics neccesary in this environment; the makers part on the work of specific artists and their cultural importance. Several examples are given to show what results in this electronic culture solidly reinforcing each argument.

Ensure successful project completion!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-05
Reviewed by Regan Windsor for Reader Views (9/06)

There are many things that can stall the completion of a project; stakeholders coming in at the last minute, customers trying to sneak in changes, and escalation, just to name a few. While it is common practice to blame the customer for these "last minute" issues the problem usually lies in a poor process or poorly-executed process. The good news is that these pitfalls can be avoided and successful project completion can be achieved.

In "So, You Think You're Done," Kevin Aguanno breaks project completion into two stages: "How to get final approval sign off" and "Everything that needs to be done post signoff." One of the key points in the presentation is that it is essential to think of, and plan for, the end of the project throughout the entire project lifecycle.

In the first stage the key components are dealing with, understanding, documenting and managing expectations, barriers and process required to get final approval, lifecycle issues such as support/maintenance/training, scope barriers, business drivers and the business metrics the company will use to determine the success of the project. By having a clear understanding of what the project is intended to accomplish, who will be responsible for signing off on the project (and ensuring their involvement throughout the project), and what is not included in the project (i.e. training) there will be less risk of these becoming a barrier to project completion or escalation.

The second stage begins after signoff and involves completion of all documentation, analysis, and reviews. This includes all legal aspects of closing and invoicing the contract, administrative activities, a review of lessons learned, any marketing that can be done from the project, and a review of the product life cycle. These activities are often overlooked or rushed as the team hurries to move on to the next project. It is important to give these processes adequate attention, however, as they have key value in increasing success and performance of future projects.

"So, You Think You're Done" is full of essential tools in ensuring a smooth and effortless project signoff process as well as guidelines for ensuring all legal and administrative issues are covered, all documentation is completed, and all value for future projects is derived. This recording is a great tool for developing key processes and procedures throughout the project management process, and a useful tool to revisit time and again.

Great Classroom book

I am a professor at a large community college in the Midwest. I have been using SW for over 5 years. I adopted this book for my Fall semester freshmen design class. I have been using books by these authors for over three years.
This book does a great job in providing clear and precise procedures on using SW to create parts, assemblies and drawings. The book has you create numerous assemblies: two bar Linkage with various configurations, support bracket, bar and collar, etc.
You then insert the created assemblies into drawings. The drawings contain numerous sheets, views and features. You create Exploded views, Isometric views, bill of materials, parametric notes, linked notes, etc. Get the idea? It is a wonderful book from start to finish. This book is accurate, up to date, and easy to follow for all levels of new users. If you are teaching SW, this is the book for your class.

'Poem Electronique' in detail
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-25
This book tells the story of the world's first fully automated multi-media experience. The Phillips pavillion at the 1958 Worlds Fair was unusual in that it didn't merely showcase the company's products---Philips demonstrated the technological feats they were capable of through an eight minute display of light, film, color and sound known as 'Poem Electronique.' Two of the key figures in the story are, of course, the architect Le Corbusier and the composer Edgard Varese; anyone interested in either of these two would enjoy this book. Those familiar with Varese's music from this project would be especially interested to learn the context in which it was originally set. Iannis Xenakis also appears here as Le Corbusier's assistant. Anyone interested in Xenakis would enjoy this book as it is after completion of the 'Poem Electronique' that music becomes his primary focus. The book is well-researched, well-written, and well-presented. There are many many illustrations, which help---through them we get a better idea of what the 'Poem Electronique' experience was like, we get to see how the designs for it progressed on paper, and we get to see the constructions as they were being put together. This book examines a very unique meeting of art and technology, one that can neve again be experienced as originally intended.
