Making complex issues clear
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-24
This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Filled with effective techniques
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-06
Although this book is about managing e-business projects the information can be effectively applied to any IT or software development project. The author starts with an accurate portrayal of the differences between traditional IT projects and the unique issues associated with e-business projects, then launches into one of the best descriptions of how to effectively manage an e-business project that I've read to date.

What makes this book so valuable, in my opinion, is the structured approach that is provided for planning, estimating and controlling an e-business project. Every aspect is thoroughly covered, starting with setting scope and developing the work breakdown structure, to managing documentation. Key areas covered by the chapters in this book include how to manage: scope, schedule, cost, stakeholder and team, risk, technology, quality, change, subcontractors and documentation. In other words, the full spectrum of key success factors. In fact the subtitle of this book is "99 Key Success Factors" and it lives up to that subtitle.

I've not found a more complete book that covers the range of techniques that this one contains, which is why I highly recommend it to anyone who is involved in planning and managing an e-business project. Another point is that the topic areas are closely aligned to the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge, although the author does not make any claims that this is the case. As such, this book is particularly valuable to project managers and organizations who work within that framework.

Where this book provides the sequence and techniques, "Delivering on Your e-Promise: Managing e-Business Projects" by Yen Yee Chong (ISBN 0273652966) seamlessly augments it by providing the business context and a detailed focus on the realities of managing e-business projects, making the combination of the two books a complete resource for e-business project managers.

Unique survey of international trends in convergent communic
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-15
This is an up-to-date survey (as of July 2001) of how traditional telecommunications models are evolving because of the influence of the Internet. The author takes an international view, which is important because trends differ from country to country, and there are lessons to be learned about the cultural factors as well as the way markets for services have evolved and taken root.

Although the author does not hesitate to get into details about technology and infrastructure, the main value of this book is the author's assessment of how the technology will evolve and converge into differentiated value-added services. His assessment is based on an array of complex interrelationships and factors, each addressed in individual chapters that are presented in the following sequence: understanding international telecommunications in an internet-driven/information economy (this introduction sets the theme for the entire book), past and present models in international telecom, developing models, technologies, international telecommunications and trade policy and U.S. telecommunications and trade policy. The final two chapters address private enterprise in telecommunications and developing trends.

The two main audiences for this book are convergent service provider marketing executives and board members of major telecommunications service providers, especially those that are already offering an array of services to meet customer demands (at the consumer and business level). The former group will especially benefit because the theme of the book is strategic in nature and the trends, factors and issues will give a clear macro approach of where the industry is headed. Overall this book is unique in that it balances technology with policy and economy, and does so on an international scale. In some parts the author went too far (in my opinion) into technical detail, but he rectified this by bringing up issues that showed an astute understanding of complex changes taking place.

Mary Lucier (PAJ Books: Art + Performance)

An Insightful and Comprehensive Look at a Video Pioneer
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Mary Lucier: Art + Performance is accessible and complex all in the same instant. Barlow begins the book with her own journey to find "House by the Water," a video installation by Lucier installed in Charleston, South Carolina. Barlow then takes the reader on a journey as she frames and contextualizes the writings of both Lucier and other contributors to penetrate the multi-faceted voice of Lucier. This is very appropriate, as we later learn that so much of Lucier's work is about a journey, whether actual or metaphorical into the landscape. Through this journey the reader can grasp the foundation, disparity, continuity and transformation of Lucier's work from her early performance projects to her more recent video projections and installations.

This text is great for students because of its accessibility and depth - it presents many useful perspectives. Due to the fact that Lucier's sketches, journal entries and writings are included and so clearly articulated, students can delve into the developmental process of the video artist, a substantial complement to the theoretical analysis. We become the voyeur into the working process of Lucier as Barlow literally takes pages out of Lucier's sketch books to brings all these elements together for us. There is an inherent irony in this, due to the fact that so much of Lucier's work is also about voyeurism.

Barlow does an excellent job of making sure that the artist and critics do not have competing voices, but simply present a full and thorough examination of the layers of Lucier's prolific career. This text is crucial not only to the medium of video but also to the art world. When so little has been written on video, and on women video artists in particular, I am thankful for this text. It is an inspiration to my own art making and will help me present to my students an in-depth and accessible look at one of the most important women in video art.

I have found this particular author to have the right idea about understanding the SAT. The introductory sections and practice questions are very comprehensable for average students to be able to grasp the concepts and as they work the practice tests the questions elevate to a more difficult level.

Very, very nice. It covers major topics on macros and it also goes into depth when running your application from a server.

It is a great complement for the medium to advanced access user. It is a nice bridge for people who may be thinking about initiating themself in Access VBA programming.

Thank you for such a wonderful book!
