I was first exposed to this software while I was student teaching. I was completely amazed and awed at how complete the information is. Not only does it give great details, but it also gives sound clips! WOW! It is extremely user friendly. The user may type in a specific date, or scroll through the years to find the information that is needed. This will give children a great interest in history because it is so easily accessed and is a visual delight.

Cessna Cleared for Takeoff Best Private Pilot Training

I bought Sporty's ground school, and have done Gleim on line. Nothing compares to the Cessna Cleared for Landing. it is complete and understandable.

Unless you already know the material, this is a great kit to buy.
The Cessna book has very clear explanations and some humor.

There is some quirks about registering this with a Cessna school. So ASK before you buy it. Remember to keep your warranty card with the id number. The software is on loan, so you do not own and cannot transfer the license.

I have not seen the Jeppesen Private Pilot yet. Their CFI refresher series was good.

I'll update once I get into it, But the KINGS which do some of the training are notorius for doing a great job.

Sporty's is good for a review, but just is not as thorough.

Exceptional, Very Useful "Do-It-Yourself" Book !!!! I found the book easy to follow and understand with organized projects, making video taking of family and vacations easier than it has been in the past. The book chapters are an easy read and made me want to expand my video project capability. The book is filled with easy step-by-step "key points" with photos to help along. Most of all, the book was extremely practical for the whole family, whether to shoot great vacation footage or a birth announcement. Some of the other great features of the book was how to stream video to your computer and my favorite was how to archive your videos, for long standing memories. Being that I love shooting video on vacation and of my family, this book is an amazing and well put together, asset to the CNET Do-It-Yourself books. Easy for amateurs and professionals, as well !!

Colloquial English

Review Date: 2007-10-09
Colloquial English is the ultimate solution for the learner of the English Language, especially those who wish to perfect spoken English proficiency. The book presents numerous examples in addition to language points and idioms, all exploring the many rich ways the English language can be used to communicate fine shades of meaning. Finally, the Life and Living sections of the book take the learner through real life situations narrated in vivid vocabulary.

Probably the most important quality of Colloquial English is that, although basic knowledge of the language is assumed, it is very simplified and accessible to all learners - a crucial requirement for learning!

I ordered BOTH the book as well as the CD. The quality of each is more than rich and satisfying.

The book seems at times to be a bit on the more intermedite side. However, when combined with the tests and other learning materials provided on line along with a well-done CD with proper Russian, it can definitely take you to that lower advanced or further level that you may have been striving for. It is work just like with any language learning but in this package, the work seems to be easy, clearly defined (answers are in the back if you need that extra pat on the back or if you really need to go over that part again very carefully.

This product is the newer, 2nd edition, and is improved from the 1st edition. Make sure you also get the CDs.
I am a college student who went to Thailand for 10 days on a service trip. I only studied Thai for two months before I left. For one month, I used whatever online resources I could find, and for the second month, I used Colloquial Thai. I got up to about Chapter 12. I studied for a few (maybe 3) hours every day, and each chapter took me 2 or 3 days to get through. When I got to Thailand, I was able to say most things I wanted to say and I could understand a lot if they spoke slowly and simply. When the translators weren't around, I could chat with the villagers, order meals, satisfy my curiousity ("khun roojak the Beatles mai khrap?" - Do you know the Beatles?), and so on. I even made two speeches in Thai, on the spot, as a representative for my group. So, I am very grateful to this book.
Here are the pros and cons:
The transliteration system is easy to read, and the symbols marking tones are easy to get used to. The most annoying part is that they transliterate the sound we would call "g" as "k", and "k" as "kh." This is common in Thai transliteration systems, because the Thai "gaw gai" is slightly different than our "g", but it's a lot closer than our "k." Also, the way they transliterate Thai vowels makes sense, especially compared to Benjawan Poomsan Becker's system.
The goal of this book is to teach colloquial Thai, not written Thai. At the end of every chapter they teach you how to read and write some of the vocab from the chapter, but it's really not the focus of the book. You will be able to read signs (like "sukhaa") but you probably won't be able to write notes.
The vocab in each chapter is very useful. Every time I started a new chapter, I thought, "Ah, now they teach you the important stuff" -- but that's because they teach you lots of important stuff, and relatively little useless stuff.
The CDs are extremely valuable. Not only do they have all the sample conversations, but they have listening & speaking exercises. For example, they will play a conversation for you that's not in the book, then ask you questions about it, then tell you the answers. Or you will role-play the part in a conversation, "I'll give you the cues in English," says our friend John Moore.
The book itself contains a lot of useful exercises. It will ask you to talk about certain things, and then you can check to see if you spoke correctly in the back of the book.
Here's a complaint: all the conversations are between two adults of near-equal social status. When I went to Thailand, I was often speaking to children, who will call you "phee" (older brother/sister) and whom you should address as "nawng" (little brother/sister). I was very confused at first as to who this "phee" was, and they must have thought it funny that I called them "khun." Also, I tried to talk to a monk once and he sort of just ignored me, because I didn't realize that you have to address monks differently than ordinary people. So I never got to talk with the monks :(.
Anyways, this program is excellent, and if you want to learn Thai, get it.

excellent book for the intermediate learner
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-21
I rate this as an excellent book for the intermediate learner, rather than the beginner, only because it is written in the Greek alphabet. It is designed for native speakers of English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. The text is therefore in Greek rather than in any of those 5 languages. The dictionary in the back of the book is in all 6 languages. The accompanying CD is also worthwhile.

This book is a good choice for the student who wants to learn to read and write Modern Greek, rather than to just speak and understand the spoken language.

These three books are invaluable pocket references that are filled with everything you need to know about dealing with the media and effective communication. There are even a set of ready responses to difficult questions from the media. Meaty content with some humor. Once I saw them I ordered them right away!
