The book is interesting and informative. The author avoids speculation and allows writers of that era to expose Hyrum in their letters and such. It's a great book and I've come away with a deeper understanding for who Hyrum Smith was as well as who his brother, Joseph Smith was.

This book is one of those pick you up, make you feel good about yourself books. The author does a wonderful job of helping you see your talents and even points out things that I never would have considered as being talents. She also explains how you can go about developing more talents. This book gave me the desire needed to go and pursue those things which interest me. It's very nice to have a book that uplifts and helps you feel like a better person. I highly recommend this book!

Great for kids and parents
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-02
My children love this picture book. It's built like the old "Where's Waldo" or I Spy books, with crazy little illustrations everywhere. Norman the Nephite is a librarian. He's cleaning up when he discovers a new set of plates (books). The funny pictures really capture kids attention. It's a real winner for keeping them quiet (for a few minutes anyway) during church.

I read this book when I was eleven and felt that someone really understood my world view. The author presents girls who are intelligent and assertive, who strive to be individuals. This quest becomes difficult in the face of pressure to be popular. I think that most young girls could identify with and enjoy the characters in this book. If you hadn't already guessed I recently re-read the book and loved it once again.

This book is a mind opener

There have been many books written on film. Most have a different approach of the film and the metamorphisms of film. We usually pull apart the elements as characters, costumes, camera angles, narrative types. As we would look at a person as a series of systems vascular, lymphatic, respiratory, etc. In the process of dissecting people we fail to find the soul. In the process of dissecting movies we do not notice their mystic power.
Geoffrey Hill gives a unique view of films. He shows us what we would have missed just treating the movie as entertainment or a story. The movies he chooses to point out are not overtly mystical. Be sure to read the introduction in which he explains his definition of the terminology used. It also helps to view the movies ahead of the book and then again after.
A selection from table of contents alone will give you an idea of what to expect.

A timely book in light of today's political turmoil
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-06
Collaboratively compiled by Kimberly and Kaleigh Komatsu, In America's Shadow is a very personalized retelling of the injustice the United States of America perpetrated upon more than 120,000 members of the Japanese-American population during the World War II era, when they were compelled by the American government to live in relocation camps. Powerful black-and-white photographs and the wistful captions tell the story of a young girl and her family's experiences. A timely book in light of today's political turmoil, and very highly recommended for readers of all ages, In America's Shadow is vivid and unforgettable photography book highlighting one of the relatively lesser known aspects of World War II.

I have waited so long for this book and it was worth the wait. As the fourth book in this series continues, so does the fast paced excitement. The haunting characters return with more drama than ever. There are many twists and turns with some shocking events. C.J. Henderson leaves you wanting more.

little-known early American architect and his work and influence
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-01
Thomas R. Blackburn's recently discovered architectural drawings and related papers at the Virginia Historical Society provide a look at his "architectural education." Blackburn worked on the University of Virginia with Thomas Jefferson and afterwards went on to build notable buildings on his own in Virginia's Piedmont region and Shenandoah Valley. Among these buildings are the Western Lunatic Asylum and the John A. G. Davis House. The discovered drawings and related papers are reproduced, most one per page, in over 150 color plates following the 100 or so pages of biographical and evaluative text by Green, an architectural historian teaching and writing mostly on Virginia architecture. Overall, text and plates establish Blackburn as an important and in some ways seminal first-generation American architect who widened the geographical range of the classic architecture related mostly to Jefferson.
